  1. I bought a lot of jazz records from Acorn Music, based in the West Country - I think it was Looe, Cornwall, but I'm not sure. Are they the shop discussed in the book? What happened to the owner - I'm talking about the 1970s/1980s. I wonder if it is a different 'Acorn'. Acorn Records are based in Yeovil, Somerset, although I think they did have a second outlet for some time (short lived) in Weymouth, Dorset. The owner of Acorn is called Chris Lowe (the other founder, Rob, sadly passed away back in 1995). It might not be the same. The Acorn shop I'm talking about moved south from north Devon to (again, if I remember correctly) Looe. I heard a rumour years ago - after I'd stopped buying from them - that the owner had died. I don't remember his name. Their main business seems to have been mail order.

  3. Mundo's prices are also quite high compared to Hiroshi's. Earlier this week Hiroshi told me he might still be able to get new Japanese CDs after January 1, but nothing's been decided yet. That is hopeful. We'll await with interest. Yes - Mundo is more expensive than Hiroshi. MG Hiroshi just told me he'll probably know more in about four weeks.

  5. The Chu Berry set contains recordings from the late 1930s/early 1940s, while the Tal Farlow dates stem from the 1950s. You can't compare those two sonically, it's apples and oranges.
  6. Here's one. I think there are actually a couple of others, if I knew what to search on. You beat me to it Sorry, Hans lol. I can handle the easy searches every once in a while, but I'll have to leave the more challenging ones to you! I'm not smart enough to take those on! Too much credit... Sorry for the duplication, guys. Thanks, Hans, for merging the two. Tony Williams still on offer. I didn't merge the threads, I'm not a moderator
  7. The Chu Berry set and Denny Zeitlin Select are also back in stock.

  10. Saw Walrath/Adams with Mingus in the Netherlands in the very hot European summer of 1976, and as far as I remember Adams was pretty restrained at the time. Make that 1975 (the summer was still very hot ). I saw them at the Hammerveld Jazz Festival, Roermond, Netherlands. Walrath is missing from this picture: (photo: Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid)

  12. I agree about the inventiveness, but the vibrato's still too much to my taste... I have to admit that I can't stand heavy vibrato; for instance, I can't listen to Sidney Bechet and Sarah Vaughan very long for exactly that reason.
  13. If you like a vibrato like hers, that is...
  14. When I changed topics, tried to post or send messages the board timed out a several times the last few days.
  15. Joe Alexander - Blue Jubilee - Jazzland JLP 23/JLPS 923; recorded June 20, 1960. I'm not 100% sure about this one, though
  16. The clocks went back last week in Europe, not in America.
  17. Sorry, I hadn't seen that; I'm no longer following the Japanese reissue threads. I guess those threads will dry up, now that Hiroshi soon won't be able to get new CDs anymore.
  18. Hiroshi Tanno just told me he won't be able to supply most new Japanese CDs from January 1, 2010. He'll keep running his record shop, so people can still contact him about used records and CDs from that date. Mr Tanno has provided me with many gems over the years and I'm very sorry to see this happening. His service has always been excellent.
  19. When he was still posting here I got a similar curt and gruff response when I inquired after the availability of his Gigi Gryce bio. Not a very nice guy.
  20. I was booted off AAJ years ago for reasons that are still unclear to me. I asked owner Ricci why but didn't get an answer. Oh well...
  21. Yes, even the 2nd edition of the Monk discography doesn't seem to distinguish between the 2 pianists. On the other hand I have a Don Byas cd entitled Midnight at Minton's that has 2 tracks presumably with Monk that aren't in the Monk discography: "Uptown" and "Body and Soul". Is there a source for the correct discography of early bootlegged Monk? (Or maybe the book under discussion which I'm about to order has one.) Kelley's book doesn't have a discography, just a list of selected recordings.
  22. (second attempt to post this, the first attempt timed out...) A thread could be deleted by using the "moderation options" drop-down menu at the left-hand bottom of the first page of the thread, but I don't know if that's still possible.
