  1. No, it's just that Aggie was asking about a remaster, that's all
  2. That's the original CD issue, not a remaster.
  3. The box was remastered by Gene Paul and, if I remember correctly, the Rhino DeLuxe reissues were done by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch. Many if not all of the original Atlantics were done by Stephen Innocenzi. Not in the United States, at least not as far as I know.
  4. The box is a good alternative if you want more than a few discs. The remastering was done by Gene Paul and the sound is better than on the Rhino DeLuxe series and the many Japanese remasters I've heard.
  5. I'd get the original Atlantic CDs. They're usually pretty cheap and later remasters are no improvements; the Rhino DeLuxe reissues sound worse to my ears and many Japanese remasters sound as if the higher frequencies were boosted. Remember that these Atlantic recordings were no sonic marvels to begin with and any remastering manipulations cannot improve what isn't there. Again, my advice would be to get the originals and enjoy the music
  6. The Peterson Mosaic set includes these Songbook albums with his piano-guitar-bass trio: Clef MGC 603 Oscar Peterson Plays Cole Porter Clef MGC 604 Oscar Peterson Plays Irving Berlin Clef MGC 605 Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin Clef MGC 606 Oscar Peterson Plays Duke Ellington Clef MGC 623 Oscar Peterson Plays Jerome Kern Clef MGC 624 Oscar Peterson Plays Richard Rodgers Clef MGC 625 Oscar Peterson Plays Vincent Youmans Not so. The last three on your list are incomplete on the Mosaic since they include later material with Herb Ellis replacing Barney Kessel. It's a pity Mosaic didn't include the remaining 1953 sessions. We are talking about 9 tracks of which 5 are previously unissued, which very well could have fitted on the 7 CDs. It would have completed those three albums. The Irving Ashby tracks were included after all. Can we hope for a second Mosaic down the road? There are some more unissued and rare tracks with Ellis. I didn't say they included the complete albums. I posted a link to the Mosaic discography, so anyone who's interested can check what's included.

  8. Someone on another forum (don't remember which one) did actually receive it. However, it was badly damaged and he returned it...
  9. You're probably referring to this thread in the Politics forum.
  10. Sound samples on AMG (scroll down)
  11. Sorry to disappoint you, but I've seen private sellers at Amazon ask much higher prices for CDs, including jazz.
  12. JSP is notorious for "borrowing" masterings from labels like Mosaic and Bear Family (Germany). Bear Family won a lawsuit against JSP a few years ago. I don't know if the above box contains any Mosaic masterings, though.
  13. A happy and healthy 2009!
  14. A legitimate concern, but all I can tell you is Cedar called me early this morning with the news. Freddie Hubbard's passing has now been confirmed by downbeat.
  15. Sad news... again. He'll be sorely missed.
  16. Whwn was this review published? Judging by the price of the record, 27 shillings (about £1.35), it must be quite some time ago...
  17. It took five attempts, but now I'm in... (sigh)
  18. I can only dream of a quick registration, it was refused by the server... I keep getting error messages.
  19. Could you post a link? Or, alternatively, what's your eBay handle?
  20. Loved his plays, especially The Servant and The Birthday Party. One of the great playwrights of the 20th Century, along with Samuel Beckett, Edward Albee and a few others.
  21. You obviously got a great deal. I think the list price was much higher. Prices shot up after the set went out of print.
  22. As far as I can tell the Archeophone King Oliver set does not have excessive noise reduction, unlike the Retrieval King Oliver set. I'm told Retrieval applied heavy noise reduction after John R.T. Davies had done the mastering. It's very audible on the Retrieval set.
  23. King Oliver set on Amazon
  24. I don't know if you've done a search, but this label - at least their King Oliver release - has been discussed before in this thread, this thread and also here.
