  1. Same here. There's some harmonica stuff on the Art Ensemble box Chuck put out and I didn't like it at all. Not fond of violin in jazz either, though I don't mind Venuti's playing on the Lang/Venuti Mosaic and Grappelli's playing on the Reinhardt Mosaic. Stuff Smith, on the other hand... I really disliked his Mosaic. Guitar playing on jazz albums that sounds like rock guitar and organ in jazz aren't my cup of tea either.
  2. Same here. I have the Japanese CD issue of In the Ver•na’cu•lar (TOCJ-6305, released in 1999), but I'd be interested in the other Roulettes as well.
  3. I don't know where Jazzpizzi-Cat lives and I don't know much about law that's applicable to internet sites, but, putting aside any moral issues one might have, are you saying that the European and not the American copyright law applies to Europeans exchanging copies on a U.S.-based internet forum like this one? Isn't U.S. copyright law exclusively applicable to U.S.-based internet fora, no matter who are involved?
  4. We're obviously mere mortals who need guidance... Both of you need to put aside your personal antipathy ( if you're able to do so ) and go back and read more carefully . (...) My insistence on reasoned discourse should only irritate those without the intellectual capital to meet the challenge . Nice tone, gentlemen, not condescending or intellectually superior at all What I meant was that I don't like to be told what to think or find.
  5. You could have read the rules (see rule #6) before posting your request.
  6. Maybe I'm really getting old, but a lack of inspiration or, as someone said to me a while ago, a certain indifference seems to be a problem with a lot of younger pianists these days, at least in the "iron repertory" as we say here (Beethoven, Mozart, etc.) Can't think of any names right now, but I've bought quite a few CDs by younger players and subsequently got rid of them because of it. They're often technically impeccable, but something seems to be missing from their playing.
  7. We're obviously mere mortals who need guidance...
  8. I've listened to a few sound samples of his interpretation of "Kunst der Fuge" and wasn't impressed. Could be that my crappy computer speakers are to blame, but I found his playing a tad "cold", technically impeccable but lacking in inspiration/feeling - hard to describe what exactly is missing. I'm looking forward to your opinion, Gökhan.
  9. Has anybody heard Pierre-Laurent Aimard's interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Kunst der Fuge" ("The Art of Fugue"; BWV 1080) on DG? I've read some rave reviews in the Dutch and U.K. press, and I was wondering what people here think
  10. The last time I visited them was at their Pentonville Road shop. I left with a suitcase full of LPs Must have been in the 1980s...
  11. Thanks for posting that.
  12. I have fond memories of Ed and his Mole Jazz. Cost me a small fortune... Mole went downhill fast after his death.
  13. I know, no need to act like a schoolteacher. I was actually responding to GregK's post, who seemed to be under the impression that they were all Columbia titles.
  14. Probably by copying existing CD releases. I thought the old Discovery label was still controlled by Warner. Or is this some independent rip-off label? They're probably the U.K.-based Discovery Records.
  15. Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else is a Blue Note recording, so the master is owned by EMI, not Columbia (now Sony). They don't own the master of Sun Ra's Jazz in Silhouette either as far as I know.
  16. So if you can get it for $2.99 including shipping - go for it. Then be prepared for the real deal: Not cheap but worth more. This is easily the best and also the best-sounding Oliver set I've heard. Highly recommended!
  17. Google links
  18. Update: the Jamal set is delayed. Scott Wenzel told me they hope to release it by the end of 2009, but nothing's certain yet.
  19. I hope it wasn't the 1930s Ellington big-band set that fell through. I've heard from good authority (JETman) that it was the Jamal that was NOT nixed but significantly delayed that freed up the spot for the Armstrong. Scott Wenzel told me they hope to release the Jamal set by the end of 2009, but nothing's certain yet.
  20. Well the George Russell composition is good and that's about it.......and I think they repeated that twice. I am not an avid Mosaic buyer probably because I don't like overlaps and filler material. But the 3 Mosaic Selects I have(Pullen, Tolliver & Herman) are real fine and don't have alot of the excesses that the regular mosaic's seem to have. If you are not an "avid Mosaic buyer" and apparently haven't had many Mosaics, why say that the regular Mosaics seem to have "filler material" and "a lot of excesses"? You're using pretty strong words for something you don't even seem to be sure about.
  21. ...for only $42.99 this time. It's a steal.
  22. Apparently this 10% off coupon can be used: CHOLIDAYNOV2008 Sorry Chuck, didn't have the info until now.
  23. Charley Patton Revenant box on eBay for $46.90, "Buy It Now" Almost too good to be true
