    Chris is right, the John R.T. Davies-mastered Frog CDs (DGF 40-47, scroll down) are sonically superior to the Columbia CDs.

    As I said earlier I fully agree with Chuck that Bechet "deserves equal billing with Armstrong for developing/transforming the jazz solo concept", but after so many years I still find Bechet's vibrato very hard to listen to... I can't get used to it. My loss, I know

    I have always liked this earlier Benny Goodman collection--is this an example of the pre-1934 playing you like? Pity they smothered the music with Sonic Solutions' NoNOISE All "Decca Jazz" releases suffer from noise reduction.

    Just read on another forum that South African singer Miriam Makeba died of a heart attack after a concert in Italy on Sunday (November 9). She was 76.

    I got a cryptic message from Ricci when I was banned years ago and when I asked him to explain, I never heard back from him. Doesn't matter, I lost any interest I may have had in AAJ a long time ago.

    I read an interview with author Henning Mankell, who was closely involved with the Swedish series, and he said that the daughter would be written out of the series. He was extremely upset by Johanna Sällström's suicide - as was Krister Henriksson, who played Wallander - and didn't want another actress to replace her.

    Right you are. I know better. (It's amazing how we repeat what we've just read, isn't it?) Do you know anything about the English version? BBC or independent production? Likely to turn up on PBS Masterpiece/Mystery? No, the only thing I know is that Kenneth Branagh is playing the leading role, that's all. Maybe the BBC site has more info.

    That German version of Wallander was actually the second Swedish series, with Krister Henriksson and the late Johanna Sällström in the leading roles. It was adapted for German television. Sällström committed suicide in February 2007; she was 32. I've read and enjoyed all the Wallender books, so an English-language series is welcome. Do you know if they'll be shooting in Sweden, for authenticity? It seems that half the story in a Wallender book is about the countryside itself. (I assume the German version is a dubbed-from-Swedish one?) The German version is the Swedish one, with German actors dubbing the voices of the Swedish actors. By the way, the title of the series/name of the principal character is Wallander.

    Well, you're going to get the "Complete Argo Ahmad Jamal Piano-Bass-Drums Trio Sessions" Doesn't sound like it...more like the complete Jamal/Crosby/Fournier trio sessions...there's other Argo/Chess/Whatever trio sides made after that trio broke up...they're quite good & break the "formula" more than a little bit. OK, fair enough

    The reason the guitar trios are not included is because some of them are owned by sony and cross label issues are not possible at this time. Seems smart to concentrate on the p/b/d sides since the bulk of the guitar trio stuff is available. I know, but I was referring to the Argo piano-guitar-bass album only.
