Complete Bud Powell Blue Note/Roost and Verve
J.A.W. replied to BeBop's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The early U.S. release with the Roost tracks can be obtained cheaply from Amazon Marketplace sellers. Those tracks were also available on several Japanese releases, including jewel case versions and at least one facsimile mini-LP sleeve CD issue. -
Complete Bud Powell Blue Note/Roost and Verve
J.A.W. replied to BeBop's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Get the Blue Note/Roost box, it's cheap, in my opinion it's musically better than the Verve material and, again in my opinion, the sound is good enough, considering the age of the recordings. The mastering was done by Malcolm Addey (discs 1 and 2) and Wally Traugott (discs 3 and 4). -
Just heard on Dutch radio that Paul Newman has died. NY Times obit

Wow. You hold Reagan's reach in such high regard and for things completely outside of any President's control. You're either deranged or just so humbled by his power and unable reason its impact. I'm familiar with Reagan's "SDI" initiative--but not so with his "Crush Art" initiative. Can you explain? I always thought "The Artists" were making "The Art." Is this not the case? To the contrary -- it's often more liberal government leaders who choose to fund art via "The Government" -- thus creating "government-funded art" and therefore having a greater hand in its creation and purpose. The irony of the left. By your "logic" Herbert Hoover gave us Jazz. What I suspect you mean is: "I was so blinded with hatred for Reagan in the 80s that I have still yet to realize how impotent my ideology truly is -- as were many artists, who made a lot of lousy, uninteresting art as a consequence." As for your "America can be deadly to brains" comment. I suspect you've never lived in an oppressed region of the world. Many a people would spit on your for such an impotent thought -- I wouldn't cross the street to do so. In case you hadn't noticed, this is neither a political thread nor the politics/religion forum.

Big fire in Universal studios destroyed jazz recordings?
J.A.W. replied to mmilovan's topic in Discography
Thanks for posting that link. The sound quality of that 1902 (the year my father was born...) track is indeed amazing. -
My thoughts exactly. That's why I said "Is this even possible????" I didn't say, "I have proof that this set is running low, I believe this wholeheartedly, and so should you!" Just because something is available for pre-order but can't be shipped yet doesn't mean it can't sell out. That happens all the time with very popular products, concert tickets, ipods, etc. As has been stated, Braxton has a big, dedicated Braxton fan base, and this set has been perhaps more anticipated than any other previously issued Mosaic. Like I said in post #13, how could it be running low when it wasn't even possible to pre-order the set until today??

If I like _____, then I'll LOVE the Anthony Braxton set
J.A.W. replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
For Four Orchestras is by no means awful. It was played slower than it should of. I'm not a native English speaker, but I take it you mean "should have". If not, I don't quite understand what you're saying. I should have said that. -

An error, already corrected. Really? I haven't even been able to access their site since I pre-ordered a couple hours ago. That's lame, though, because it heavily affected my decision to buy this early. Oh well, I'd still almost certainly be buying this one eventually anyway. Obviously it was an error, how could it be running low when it wasn't even possible to pre-order the set until today? I'm having no problems accessing the Mosaic site.

I heard it was withdrawn because of its controversial title. It is being reissued as 'Creation'. I was going to post that, but decided against it to avoid something like a 16th Century war on religion...

Pity her earlier work with Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy is so poorly represented on CD. I only have a few discs and the sound on most of them is horrible.

I've always found this Parker box a mixed bag. The JATP sessions are not my cup of tea, and neither are the dates with strings. The small-group sessions are the best in my opinion, though I don't really like the ones with Buddy Rich.

Upcoming Goodman set - discography???
J.A.W. replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Why don't you go to Mosaic's upcoming releases page (scroll down) and read the description of the Goodman set? The discography will appear on Mosaic's site as soon as the set is up for pre-order, probably later this month. Some of the stuff has been released on the Scottish Hep Jazz label, mastered by the late John R.T. Davies. -
Good choice.

I have no idea
-
Really? That's what he told me and there seems to be some truth in it, otherwise Amazon would normally be selling them but as far as I know they're only available from sellers on Amazon Marketplace.
-
I'll bet those sound sweet! Yep, they do and sonically I prefer them to the Mosaic, although that set isn't bad either. I sold the Mosaic when I got the TOCJs. For those interested: the TOCJs are long gone and pretty hard to find. Get the Mosaic instead!
-
Yeah. That one is turning out to be elusive as a 'deal'. The owner of a CD store in Austria told me yesterday that Universal Europe deleted the Buddy Rich set some time ago and that it's been hard to find ever since, so I guess you'll have to get it from Mosaic if you really want this one.
-
This is indeed a great set and I'd immediately order it if I didn't already have the Japanese "Blue Note Works" TOCJs, which only omit a few alternates.
