  1. Since I consider the earlier Mosaic Giuffre box, the complete Capitol/Atlantic, to be a gem, I must agree. I suggested a Complete Verve Jimmy Giuffre Sessions box (and also a Complete Verve Lee Konitz Sessions box) to Mosaic a couple of years ago and they said they were interested - but that was all.
  2. I'm still looking for these Masters of Jazz CDs: Duke Ellington, Vol.8 Billie Holiday, Vol.5 Billie Holiday, Vol.7 Billie Holiday, Vol.11
  3. I don't think promoting bootlegs is allowed here.
  4. Can you say whether we'll like them? Some will, some won't...
  5. The Mosaic site (if that's what you mean) was last updated in May. Here's the "Future projects"page. They're planning new sets (not listed yet), but that's all I can say.
  6. And I now have it on very good authority that Hodges was born in 1907--so this year is his centenary. Thanks for the info!
  7. Yep, as does the new edition. Do you know if the new edition is just a reprint or an updated/enlarged version? According to Amazon the 2007 edition does have more pages.
  8. Hadn't checked the AMG one yet--thanks much, J.A.W. I may e-mail our old MIA friend Mike Fitzgerald and see what he recommends re: making a final determination. You're welcome. Please post Mike's reply, I'd like to know as well.
  9. AMG (yep, it's unreliable), Wikipedia (probably even more unreliable) and downbeat also say 1907.
  10. Yep, as does the new edition. Grove (and yes, I know it's unreliable) says 1907. I edited my post before I saw your second post - all my other reference books and records guides etc. say 1907.
  11. Leonard Feather/Ira Gitler's 1999 Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz gives 7/25/1906 as his birthday, but that's the only one. All my other reference books and record guides say 7/25/07.
  12. I'm not quite sure what's going on here, but so far three of those orders were cancelled by the seller because the item was not available. Weird... I ordered a non-jazz CD from them that was supposed to come out on June 5, and I got the same message. They refunded my pre-payment immediately, so there's no problem there, but still...

  14. sorry, my bad english, I should have written dogmatically selective, or something like that. Anyhoo, I think a case can be made to display Phil as a Sheep in some Monty Python like animated satire with him having lo-o-o-ong mo-o-n-o-o-logues that sound like sheep's blating. Of course his name would have inspired such a sketch, but the world would be much less funny if such twisty-turny-translational cheap shots would be left out of the arena. When it comes to humor, we clearly have different perspectives. I suggest we leave it at that.
  15. Being categorical about fun is silly too, in my view. Satire surely has the right to include a person's name in it's game. Yep, but there's no satire here. And I'm not being categorical about fun in general (I didn't say I was, please read carefully and don't put words into mouth!), on the contrary, just about making fun about someone's name.
  16. My post was not directed at you personally, Al. It's just that I don't understand why people can't be more careful with someone's name, that's all. It's not their fault they've got the name they have, if you get my drift, and making fun of it is just silly in my view.
  17. are you sure? I am. Seriously.
  18. Phil Schnapps? Guy That's an old joke. Schnapps is German, not Dutch, by the way. I've never understood why making fun of someone's name is funny...
  19. Love him or hate him, but why are so many people calling him "Schapp"? His name is Schaap (= Dutch for sheep, by the way; it's a Dutch name). I'm still looking for a satisfactory CD version of the 1938 concert. I hate noise reduction (to my ears it does affect the music), but the sound on Schaap's version is headache-inducing...
  20. Well, yeah. But he fits the other, non-literal meaning of "avant-garde". Guy Literally speaking, music is only avant-garde historically if it eventually becomes garde. So bebop was avant-garde but late Coltrane and Ayler were not. Right? Some turned left, some right.
  21. The music is good, but the sound isn't - Criss' alto does sound very shrill indeed, worse than usual. But these recordings were not very good in the first place...
  22. I don't have one for sale, but there's one on the Amazon Marketplace for $42. Or the regular Amazon price is $49 with free shipping. Not a bad price for a good box set either way. The Freelance Years on Amazon.com
  23. Hans, the Feb 67 session is not soft jazz. I said it sounds like soft jazz to me. It still does.
  24. Most labels are stoopid, and yet we find them useful nonetheless. Guy Quite.
  25. He's posting frequently in the jazz section on a blues forum.
