Commodore Jazz Sets ...How good are they?
J.A.W. replied to andybleaden's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
2500 Unfortunately, vinyl only... -
no fair counting aric twice. no fair counting deep. frankly jim you know that we do not have 1600 members posting, let alone voting. and all members have had the opportunity to vote! the poll fairly represents the will of the majority. i prefer your honesty that you don't have the time to mess with this to your false derision of a fair poll. -_- No poll is fair when it has two "joke" answers. A fair poll is "yes" "No" and "I don't care". And furthermore a poll on such a question is inherently biased toward those in favor. They want the new subforum and will happily vote for it. Who's to say how many of those who vote "I don't care" actually would be in opposition if they took a moment to think it through? I agree with both Dan and Erik (Aggie), and in view of what Jim said (post #100) I think we should give it a rest
-
Not in the foreseeable future - I think Jim was pretty clear about that in his post #100.

You're right, it's not "free jazz".
-
How stupid is that? Make unreasonable demands and get nothing, rather than negotiate a reasonable "something" based on projected sales of a jazz CD (what might that be - maybe 3,000 worldwide). Must be the lawyer representing the estate! At least someone is beginning to see the light. why are you slamming the lawyer??? Because they're always to blame, even if they're not...

I put a disc in my cart out of curiousity, and the economy shipping to the U.S. seems to be €3.82. Two discs = €6.05. It goes up on a sliding scale. That's rather steep! But then I guess it's just a reflection of Swiss post's prices! Anyway, if anyone has wanted "Rara Avis" for years, this won't keep him! Even less the fact that the disc is listed for only 6 euro! Steep?? You're kidding! The lowest rate for a package (up to 250 grams) from the Netherlands to the U.S. is €5.34 or about $7.20, and it's not even traceable!

I asked Mosaic a while ago and they told me it was "indefinitely delayed"...

Yep. It's always a good idea to take a peek at the "Future projects" page: Art Farmer – The Time and The Place (MCD-1010) Art Farmer has been associated with a lot of stellar quintets since the inception of hard bop. Many equal, but none top, the band he led in 1967 with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker. Jimmy Heath was a frequent collaborator with Farmer in the ‘60s and he was more than a partner in the front line; he was an invaluable composer and arranger for many of the trumpeter’s projects. And in an era of great rhythm sections, the combination of Walton, Booker and Roker was one of the best. On February 8, 1967, this quintet gave a concert at New York’s Museum Of Modern Art with Columbia Records rolling tape. The resultant album The Time And The Place featured seven selections from the concert including two Heath originals and J.J. Johnson’s “Short Cake.” The three tunes that complete the concert (Duke Pearson’s “Is That So,” Albert Dailey’s “Dailey Bread” and Kenny Dorham’s “Blue Bossa”) did not see the light of day until fifteen years later. Now the complete concert is available on this CD.

I've pre-ordered the Cox from CDUniverse for $14.04 (about €10.40).

Which Lacy got "less music"? Are you thinking of NY Capers & Quirks? Those two LPs do indeed have more music to offer. So far, no prior compact disc reissue to my knowledge has been trimmed down for re-reissue on hatOLOGY. That and Cliches (nee Prospectus) were shorn of several tracks on their CD editions, the latter due to tape storage issues. The oddity is that in this day and age of CDs being reissued with bonus tracks, here's a case of the opposite. A minor grumble, however, as Werner has documented some important musical milestones over the years. Wasn't there also some kind of copyright issue with some of the axed tracks?

I think....think ...that I may have stumbled into a good deal over at Amazon Canada yesterday and snagged the Consecration box for a darned nice price -- CDN$ 12.72 ($11 US?? ). With an $8 shipping charge my guess is that it's the 8-disc box. Is this possible??? Have received a confirmation notice so we'll see what happens. Sounds like a great deal if everything holds together. I'm saving money for a big splurge in January to get the Last Waltz/Consecration/Secret Sessions sets. I'm not sure about the Complete Fantasy, I'm wondering if the sound is any good on those cds; whether to go for Japanese K-2 imports for the individual sessions; wait to see if Concord puts the box on sale during another blow-out sale; or wait for whatever else they have in mind regarding the Evans catalog. Decisions, decisions..... Would anyone like to chime in on the sound quality of the Complete Fantasy box? This is the last piece of the Bill Evans box set puzzle for me, and I'm just wondering if the sound is muddy or nice. I had the Japanese 20-bit K2 remastered Consecration and Last Waltz box sets and sold them to a friend of mine, they were a bit too harsh to my ears. I got the American box sets instead, they sound a tad warmer - and maybe muddier to some, but that doesn't bother me. Edit: sorry, just noticed you're talking about the Complete Fantasy box.

I noticed this one also. How do I order this (sorry I'm so out of the loop on this )? Why not e-mail Hiroshi Tanno: hiroshi@earlyrecords.com - he takes PayPal and his shipping rates are quite reasonable.
-
Sounds good, the best of the three Late posted samples of.
-
Thanks for the links, Late. I don't want to offend anyone, but I've just listened to the Turrentine samples and the music sounds like late-night soft jazz to me. Not one of Turrentine's better efforts, at least not to my ears. Pity.

J.A.W. replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Chuck: Don't know what the problem is but I couldn't email to the above address out of yahoo. PM sent for the catalog. Possibly a spam filter at work somewhere along the line. -
My thoughts exactly.
-
Can't say anything about the sound on the Select compared to the LPs, other than that it's a typical Ron McMaster mastering job.
-
Same here.
-
As far as I know Mosaic decided not to number the Selects anymore a while ago, to cut costs.

johnny mercer + cohn/newman/green selects
J.A.W. replied to etherbored's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Select includes Al Cohn's album The Natural Seven; I've just listened to the Spanish Fresh Sound/RCA CD issue again and I have to admit that it's a pretty lacklustre, uninspired affair... -
So this project is shelved for the time being...

that ain't hebrew! I'm pretty sure that is Hebrew - in cursive rather than block letters. The loop looks exactly like a cursive letter ayin. I'm not sure what the long line is but I think it's either a vav or a lamed. [Oops - maybe it's a nun. See http://www.nana.co.il] I was not aware to the problem with the image I tried to insert. I saw it only this morning on my office PC. I hope now, after the post has been edited, everything is clear. It's clear, but now the follow-on conversation doesn't make as much sense! No sense at all - what are you talking about??

"One of the lesser-known Lee Konitz albums, this LP (which has not been reissued yet on CD) features the altoist joined by six brass and a rhythm section for eight Jimmy Giuffre arrangements. The shouting brass contrasts well with Konitz's cool-toned solos and together they perform eight underplayed standards. Guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans (who are on four songs apiece) are major assets behind Konitz on this pleasing set." "Shouting" brass and Lee Konitz? Not a combination I'd think of, but, who knows, maybe it works. I agree. On the other hand, Jim Hall and Bill Evans are a big plus. I wish I'd remember how this album was. I obviously haven't listened to it very much...

AMG review (for what it's worth...) I had this album way back in my vinyl days, but to be honest I don't remember it at all...
