I'm sure that one of our U.K members can provide a link that works in Europe. Probably something to do with copyright. Mystery solved; the Dexter Gordon CD does indeed contain Dial recordings. I found this description in Japanese on the CD Japan site: ザ・チェイス/デクスター・ゴードン・オン・ダイアル/ デクスター・ゴードン (The Chase / Dexter Gordon on Dial / Dexter Gordon) [ジャズ名盤 ベスト&モア 999シリーズ 第5弾] テナーの巨人デクスター・ゴードンの初期時代を集大成したダイアル・セッション。歴史的に名高いワーデル・グレイとの「ザ・チェイス」の初録音、テディ・エドワーズとの「ザ・デュアル」セッションなど聴き応えのあるテナー・バトルが楽しめる。 The Google translation was too weird to post here, but the description does mention Dexter Gordon's first recording on Dial; it also mentions Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards.

Well, I doubt that Toshiba/EMI would use the Dial recordings without permission from Spotlite, even though they are in the public domain in some parts of the world.

Pity the Anthony Braxton 1985 London, Birmingham and Coventry sets aren't part of the sale.

I believe that all TOCJ's are EMI owned recordings. None of the ones you mention qualify. Unless they struck a licensing deal with Spotlite (UK), the label that owns Dial.

Well, I think it's a good thing they are reissuing pre-bop and post-mid 1960s jazz. Generally, those eras have been more or less neglected in comparison with 1950s-mid 1960s jazz. Apart from Mosaic only Nessa and a few other labels have reissued post-mid 1960s jazz, and Mosaic have done pre-bop sets before, of course.

Same here. No idea how many vocals this set will have, but there's a good chance I'll pass. I have the John R.T. Davies-mastered Hep Chick Webb CDs with relatively excellent sound, but those vocals...

Chuck is right, more noise usually means more music. Heavy noise reduction kills the music.

In my experience ordering from the U.K. is a pain at the moment, a lot of packages take weeks to arrive, even though the Netherlands is just across the North Sea...

Totally agree. I've owned Quad amps and they were excellent. I still have Quad electrostatic speakers and am very happy with them.

If you were happy with your Quads when they were still OK, I'd say stick with them and have them serviced.

Haven't heard many different versions. I've owned the Grumiaux for years and my current favourite is Rachel Podger on Channel Classics. Her baroque violin "sound" is wonderful, airy and not too heavy, and she plays these pieces with a kind of ease that I like. Another good version is Viktoria Mullova's Onyx recording. I never really liked what she did, but lately her playing has become much more interesting, at least to my ears. I've heard snippets of Monica Huggett's and Lucy van Dael's versions. Their sound is too "seriously authentic", too heavy for me in these works.

What do you base your assumption on that "99% of the people here own the material in various forms"? I very much doubt the percentage is that high and the set is not made exclusively for "the people here". Besides, I think there's a good chance the sound quality on the upcoming Mosaic set will be relatively good and possibly better than on many post-78 releases. I am very much looking forward to this set. The Hawkins set is not available for pre-order yet, so there's nothing about it on their site. The discography was provided directly by Mosaic. I got it a couple of months ago when I asked them about it; at the time they asked me not to post it because it wasn't final yet - apparently it is now. Thanks. Will just have to be patient. I have a great portion of this, but I'll expect improved sound from Mosaic... Scott told me a while ago that they're looking at a November release - in time for Xmas.
