Marc Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos
.:.impossible replied to mikeweil's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Yeah man. That RJ recording is one wild band! Is there a second? I'd definitely be interested! Hell, Mike, I'd take any recommendations you've got directly to the store! -

I think the main difference for me is the overpresence of vocals on the second, as if Ribot thought he was becoming a singing cubano sensation! Hold off on the singing Ribot, and let your fingers do the walking! You guys like the Tzadik album under Roberto Juan Rodriquez' name, El Danzon de Moises? -
Modern Rock - what do you like???

I never thought of Gastr Del Sol when listening to either of THOSE bands. Wilco has continued to grow on me, whereas Radiohead's most recent releases have not. Sam Prekop has a new album coming out under his name this year. Highly anticipated in my household for sure. His s/t is so great to me. I've also been enjoying O'Rourke's Drag City stuff lately. And Califone is always playing on a stereo nearby. I got a copy of a Tortoise show from 2003 recently. Never saw them live, but this disc just reminded me of how cool their music was. Not too heavy, not too serious, and usually in some sort of a pocket. Gastr was usually out of pocket, which can also be good, but only when I'm in that mood. Usually that mood is devoted to albums like Too Beautiful to Burn, or New York Art Quartet. I never think of Gastr anymore, for some reason. Any recommedations to get me back on the wagon? -
Henry Grimes and Marshall Allen

Is that right? I can't imagine! I'd love to see it... Thanks for the photos and write-ups guys! -
Hey guys. I'm heading down to NYC March 25-27. Anything of interest that weekend? Thanks!

Hm. With vibraphones, I had a different experience. They aren't as common a household instrument as the Hammond and everyone that has one seems to know what they're worth. Seems they hold their value very well, though companies are still manufacturing quality instruments. Generally, you can find a vintage instrument for about 1/3 the cost of a new vibe. Unless you are in the market for an Aurora, which would be like you guys' quest for a late-fifties Hammond B-3. They still go for $4,000+ after 30 years. Interesting dilemma. So what is the minimum you would be willing to pay for a late-fifties Hammond B-3?

More often than not, I've listened to the Bill Evans Trio Sunday At The Village Vanguard K-2 since I bought it. Great Sunday music.

No, but at least you'd have the pick of the lot. You aren't looking to resell. You're just looking for a nice late-50s Hammond. And it sounds like it is up to you to set the price. You don't HAVE to rip the owner off...

Pictures Of Bad Ass Hammond Organs
.:.impossible replied to Soulstation1's topic in General Discussion
Whoa! Not a Hammond I'm sure, but I think this goes hand and hand with the Soul Plane cockpit! -
How do they find them? Estate sales? I'd imagine the most unassuming households have these babies sitting cold in the corner, waiting for one of you guys to wake 'em up! When I was a kid, like 6 to 10 or so, I had a friend whose grandparents had a great big organ in the corner. I remember it curving around me, lots of keyboards and switches. I couldn't get the image to work, but if you click here, this is how I remember it. Maybe bigger though. I notice that this one isn't a Hammond, but I bet there are cherry Hammonds all over this country just ripe for the pickin'!

Jim, Is the B-3 for sale? Are you thinking about buying it? Sounds like you don't come across a 1959 in this condition everyday!

Shit yeah!

I actually agree. I'm glad to have this set finally! Now, who's got a copy of the Newport performance? -

I am amazed at how well Brian Blade's kit is captured on this disc. To think bootlegs used to mean poor sound quality. Even the audience recordings of disc one and two sound ok, with balance issues. -

I just got the set today. I have Disc 6 playing now, and I'd assume this was a studio recording if I didn't know any better. VHS eh? P.S. I edited the Paris venue, in case anyone copy/pastes this info for their records. Théâtre du Châtelet. -

Blindfold Test .:.23 DISC TWO Answers
.:.impossible replied to .:.impossible's topic in Blindfold Test
Thanks for all of your comments as well Mike! I was listening again to the Matt Wilson disc today. One of the things that continues to amaze me is the fact that when Larry Goldings is playing piano, he doesn't sound at all like an organ player on piano. He has a unique style on both instruments. This is a good group. I want to check out more Larry Goldings for sure. -
This is a troubling thought that I have grappled with not just with the musical arts, but in other arts as well. The older I get the closer I end up sticking to aesthetics, be they aural or visual. Same. Although, I think I needed to accept everything for a time before I could even realize that I had an opinion as to what looked/sounded successful. The spirit of improv, and anti-establishment, I love; however, with regard to the result, this is not always the case.

Most definitely. The most recent trend is fast burritos as big as your head.
