That would be a good thing as well. Michael, were you there? -

I hope we get to hear that WARM performance on disc! From what I've read so far, it sounds like a nice quartet. -
I'll second Wuxtry. I've been there twice and have come across some pretty great stuff. Plus, it has the feel of a great record shop.

Now that is cool. I remember you posting something about that thing before. What microphones are you looking at for field recording? Are you a musician? Would you be able to plug that right into a soundboard? I'd assume so. I have the 20G iPod and love it. This spring/summer, I've had the entire Atlantic Box set, plus numerous Trojan Box sets and various other R&B and Jamaican in a list on shuffle. Still have yet to hear the same song twice! And I'm working through John B's blindfold as well! My brother also sent me a couple of mp3 discs full of oop salsa, brazilian, bossa, etc. that he has been listening to which makes for great summer music. I like having all that space!

Nice! And I still haven't bought the Uptown discovery yet!!! I haven't bought anything in about four months, but that is all about to change! Great news Lon.

Thanks Catesta. Chuck, I hope he will allow you to publicize his thoughts. I'd love to hear what he thought of WARM performance. The Bill Dixon/Warren Smith ensemble too! Also, that duet between Brotzmann and Nasheet Waits! And the Thurman Barker group. Hell, the list goes on and on. Jarman with Anderson... I'll look forward to reading his thoughts, either here or in Coda. -
Of all the titles listed, and there are a lot of great titles, I am excited to hear Super Nova again. A friend of mine had a copy that we listened to about 6 years ago now, which was the last time I heard it. I hadn't been listening to jazz music for that long and Wayne Shorter was, at that point, still a "sideman of Miles" to us. We were checking out every name we knew. I'm listening to Shorter's music with much different ears now and seem to remember that album being a pretty interesting listen. I'd also be interested in hearing Unit Structures after the remaster. That is a recording that I have really grown into over the past few years. Which are y'all looking forward to most?

I hear you. I haven't heard much of anything about Vision this year. Did anyone here go? Any links to reviews? I've been hoping something would pop up here. What was Litweiler's impression? -

Modern Rock - what do you like???

Great list Chucky. Dots and Loops LP Has anyone been checking out Saddle Creek over the past couple of years? Some great stuff to come out of there. For what its worth, I think Josh Rouse deserves some credit as well. Sort of an under the radar songwriter/multi-instrumentalist that understands the craft of pop/rock. Nashville roots. Also Sufjan Stevens? Wow. Seriously impressive scope of music. And my brother recently turned me onto Blonde Redhead. Some good stuff there as well, especially if you prefer early Modest Mouse. I'm a huge proponent of Prekop. Actually, seems that most of the Chicago rock of the past ten years has aspired to a higher standard. CALIFONE. I can't recommend these guys enough to rock fans. Start anywhere except for the Deceleration series. That is if you can even get your hands on the Deceleration series. Limited pressings of free improv to film which sounds much different than their proper albums. Thrill Jockey picked them up for the past two albums, but they can still be found through Perishable Records. -
STAX/VOLT - The Complete Soul Singles 1968-71

This has to be in contention for the best blog on the internet right now. -
I'm wondering the same thing. I've had my copies for a while, but I think others didn't get there's until recently. There are definitely a few things that I will want to look into further!

I am copy/pasting this from another board. Scott Davidson writes: I am writing a book on the life and music of Lem Winchester. If anyone here knows anyone who knew him, or played with him, or has any photos, articles, or anything else pertaining to him, can you please contact me? Thank you.-Scott Davidson scodavdrum@aol.com

That was a fun read. I would like to see the footage! Being born in 77, characters like Dock Ellis were pretty much long gone by the time my interest in baseball began. I certainly wish that baseball was more like it was when my dad was a kid. Hell, the baseball world hardly resembles what I remember of the game during my childhood. I'm not going to claim that it is dead, because I lived in New England for the past few years and baseball is anything but dead in New England, but as a whole, it seems 'dead inside'.

I'll second/third the Leo Parker. I'd been reading about this recording for a while going back to krypton and saw it in a store over the spring. It did not disappoint. Well played and full of the spirit.

I would like to chime in here, if I may. I have not heard this album.

FRANCIS DAVIS/CLEMENTINE

I don't know. Tonight is the first time in a long time that I have read this board to any real extent and I just keep coming across picayune criticism of what other people have written in trying to qualify music. Of course dicotomy is limiting, and I'm sure the writer realized that as well. I think we all realize that the writer is trying to identify with the reader that wants to like the latest Ribot, or such a guitar adaptation of Ayler's music. All I can hope is that you guys at least have your stereos on when typing these quibbles. To the guitarists in this thread, it is ok to back down. You know this is one of the silliest things to come into pixel on this site. Just let it be. No need for defense. The statement will dissolve itself it is so watered down. So do y'all think FD was referring to OUR Clem, defender of the common man? -

re: Life Wish I totally agree. I was hoping some of the band would chime in on this one. I have a feeling they would definitely dig this disc. Jim A., you did get the disc right?

BFT#25, bonus discs: WOODY SHAW, 18-JAN-1983

Tom, I finally put this in the player tonight, after all this time! The sound is great, and the band is on fire. Thanks for sharing!!! Cary -
The list is almost infinite... so many dedicated musicians who find their voice in the double bass. Jimmy Garrison? Some of his solos from the live Coltrane quartet stuff I have heard are unbelievable. I heart bass.

Richard Davis is another bassist that usually jumps right out of the speakers for me. His lines are completely elastic and his tone is always impeccable. I think Richard Davis is able to pull things off technically that other bassists wouldn't even consider. Most bassists have built up incredible strength in their forearms and hands, allowing them to play the bass at all. Then there are the bassists that have been mentioned in this thread who practiced every chance they got until strenghth was no longer a limitation and imagination became the primary factor. To me, Richard Davis' approach to his instrument is like no other. Listen to Out To Lunch! or Rip, Rig, and Panic or the Walt Dickerson duets for examples of his playing. The Andrew Hill recordings as well. I love bassists. My brother is a bassist and being around him, watching and listening to him practice incessantly for the past six years has put a lot into perspective for me. When I attempt to play, it is hard enough to find the note, let alone with any sort of volume and tone.

Thanks guys. Say they'll be emailing me shortly...

This is a band where the albums sound very different from the live recordings. I don't know what kind of music they are into now, but the music they were making in the late-90s was very unique and a lot of fun to hear live. Futureman, who plays the synthax-drumatar, is one hell of a percussionist, Victor Wooten plays the four-string electric bass like no other (check out first solo album A SHOW OF HANDS if you do play electric bass at all), and Bela Fleck has surely made a name for himself in and outside of the picking world. Playing an electric banjo opens up a wide range of sounds for the band. Jeff Coffin is no slouch either, though he tends to stick to soprano with the Flecktones. His tone on the soprano is a bit easy for my taste, but I bought a solo disc of his back in college for $1!!! and it turned out to be some pretty hardcore jazz coming out of Nashville with avant-garde elements. I'd say to check out some of the live stuff to hear how seamlessly they transition between musics. They're not for everybody, but neither is fusion. They are definitely a fusion band with the chops to spare. Seems like they can do just about anything at the drop of a hat. Still, I haven't pulled any of their music out in a while. I've been listening to the same old Monk recordings for the last couple of years...
