  1. DIS, Ray Anthony runs an outfit called "Big Bands." I think its out in California. Sort of a mail order business. My grandfather tried to get him to bring a band to Richmond, VA once and Ray told him "You couldn't afford it!" Grandaddy always gets a kick out of telling that story. Anyway, you can reach Ray Anthony at 1 800 845 2263. Sometimes a girl answers, but its usually Ray. Best of luck. Cary
  2. No, Leeway, it wasn't on the shipping invoice. I don't know where it is. I sent a form to customer service tonight. Coincidentally, as soon as I typed that last post, I received an email confirming shipment of the rest of my order, sans Duke Ellington Foreground and Background. Oh well. I was looking forward to those. Still on backorder. I still have hope.
  3. Oh man! I apologize. I should write people's names on these things. That was back during the jazz trading post days and there was a lot of mail going around. I'm sorry Dan! How embarrassing. I think I also associate you two as having a very similar taste in music? I could be wrong. Are you from Texas by chance? Well, thank YOU Dan for the disc. It has spun many a time here.
  4. I received an email last week saying my order of Newk's Time and The Sonny Rollins Complete Prestige Box shipped. A package arrived three days later. Just the box set. Question mark there. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything with regard to the other seven discs I ordered... I guess I'll just wait and see. At least I got the box set, which is fantastic by the way. I didn't have most of this music! Sonny Rollins has been hard to come by in every jazz section I've frequented over the years. I don't understand why...
  5. Hey, I didn't do as bad as I thought. I'm actually surprised at some of the guesses I made regarding the Basie music and Freddie Green. I don't have any of that stuff, but am somewhat familiar with it. Really good disc. I need to check out some of the Terry Gibbs Dream Band!
  6. 01 OK, I know there was a joke on the board a few weeks ago about someone asking "what cartoon this came from." Sounds like some classic Bugs to me. 02 This MUST be Terry Gibbs Dream Band. I don't have any of this stuff, believe it or not. I'm loving it. How could you not?! Great arrangement, but I don't know the tune. Could be their signature for all I know! Really nice. Great vibes solo at the end as well. Live? Has to be the Dream Band. Thanks for this introduction! 03 There is a local big band that plays this tune and it sounds like a very similar arrangement. I don't know the name of it. I am never very good with names. I feel like I should know who the trumpet and saxophone are. I'm going to guess Byrd on trumpet. Fantastic comping from the piano during the trombone solo and I love how the drummer throws the accent around. I'm thinking about Philly Joe, but I'm not positive. This could be him. 04 Sounds like it came from an LP. There's a lot of static during the ensemble sections. I don't know what this is, but I like it. Sounds like something my Grandfather has in his collection. 05 Kinda Dukish! I know this one. I just ordered the remaster of this album from yourmusic.com, but it seems to be on backorder. Surprise! Anyway, I recognize this, believe it or not, from Bandwagon interpretation. I knew which album this came from because my brother played it for me over Christmas. I've got to get more Duke. 06 What a tempo for guitar strumming! Wow. Man this group burns! Is this Count Basie? I don't have much from his groups either. There are a lot of areas that my jazz knowledge is lacking. Milan's blindfold put that into light. This one is too! 07 I just don't know much about swing. I think this is another blindfold that my grandfather would kill me on! More of that uptempo guitar strumming! At this point, I have to guess that it is the same player, which makes me think that I am also probably listening to another Basie Band? The guitar is harder to hear in this mix, but he sure is going at it. As I understand it, the man never took a solo on record? Doesn't sound like Basie during the piano solo though! I don't know!!! This is SWEET! I love the piano solo! 08 You know, I thought this blindfold was going to be dripping with grease. I'm feeling grease right around the corner. I hope this is available on CD! Great percussion. I couldn't guess who this group is. I'd guess the piano player is the leader. Yo no se´. 09 There are a couple of tracks that I like from this album, but for the most part, I felt it was too lite and I actually sold it back! Listening to this track makes me wish I still had it. I like the feel the band has on this tune. Any other Friedman recommendations? People say that it is difficult to express yourself on the vibes, but I think this is a great example, in contrast to Terry Gibbs' sound, that it is possible to develop a tone. Recording, unfortunately has a lot to do with vibes tones. It seems like a very difficult instrument to record well. Or that used to be the case anyway. The old recordings really vary. This is a well recorded vibraphone. 10 Kenny Dorham. I'm drawing a blank on that tenor sound, but I know it! I've never heard this before. I like the tune. Sort of a shaky solo for Dorham? 11 Sorry. I got pulled away. Missed this one, but I did hear some nice flute playing. 12 Missed it entirely. I will have to go back. 13 You tried to fool me with that JB intro! I walked in to this and couldn't hit the back button! Here's the grease! I have this one! Brandon Burke and I were talking about this the other day. I love the way the drum kit is recorded on this album. Especially the bass drum. It kind of has that 'pat' sound, rather than 'boom.' I don't know anything about the drummer, but I like his style and think the recorded sound fits it well. Fonky! 14 Whoa! I don't know this one! A tenor in each channel! Sweet. There's some more shuffling guitar, but more of a boogaloo thing. Oh, he plays like stuff I've heard Melvin Sparks do, but the tone sounds different. Sounds like an older, bigger bodied guitar. I don't know what I'm talking about. This is a fun track! Sing playa sing! I knew you'd bring the grease. Can't stop now! Don't stop now! 15 I knew that you couldn't! Believe it or not, I have this one too! And I really don't have all that much organ stuff. This board gave me the nudge to check some stuff out. Anytime I see an album by any of these guys, I go ahead and pick it up. I have friends that love jazz and all sorts of music, but dismiss the organ groups. I don't understand. So, I have to ask, what is Electric Surfboard? If I recall, this is an album that was recorded in Nashville? I like the bass tone. He's really got it going on. Round and dry, not too dry. Dry enough to soak up some of that grease that Brother Jack is putting down. Probably some session guy. This is just so damn groovy! 16 Alright, I don't have this one, but I know just enough about organ trio to know exactly who this is. I don't know about the horn players though. These guys would just set up a groove so strong that it strolls off on its own. Yeah! Big John taking it slow and easy. I wish I knew more about how b-3s worked. That sound is so great. I think Ben Dixon is such a great fit for this style of music. Never busy, but always working. 17 Sounds like mid 60s Blue Note: Lee Morgan and undeniable Jackie Mclean. I don't know who else is in the band... Billy Higgins probably? Sounds good. I don't know who the trombone player is. The logical, uneducated guess would be Curtis Fuller, but I don't think so. Good stuff man! I still listen to that comp you sent me way back "Sidewinder and Sons." My wife digs it too! Thanks for the music Big Al. I really enjoyed the disc.
  7. They upped the forecast here in RI to minimum 15", maximum 30". I just filled up the fertilizer broadcaster with snow melt and went over the driveway once to soften up what's already there. I'll be out there shovelling this evening until the winds pick up the way they are forecasting. They are calling for 3" per hour. That means I'll be shovelling once every hour? Oh nuts. I know I'm going to miss this when we move back down to the beach...
  8. I have a disc by alto player Sadao Watanabe called Dedicated To Charlie Parker (Denon). It is a live recording from 1969. Mostly quartet, but some tracks feature a trumpet player named Terumasa Hino. I bought it because of its all Japanese line-up and wanted to hear their interpretation of Bird's music. Not too bad to be honest. Very bluesy. I got the disc for $2.00 so I figured it was a no-lose situation.
  9. How much did you guys get in the Midwest and Great Lakes? The locals are continually upping the precip forecast. Last night we saw 10-20 (2 feet locally). This morning it has upped to 10-28! Overnight! My next door neighbor has a blower, but he's never offered it before. Maybe 20+ inches will do it.
  10. Shit. I never thought to start a thread on this band. Hey, isn't the bassist the leader of the band? I think so. Glad to see you guys already heard this shnit.
  11. Looks like a cat head to me.
  12. I haven't read any of this yet, and actually received 20 and 21 around the same time, and haven't had a chance to sit down and go through the thing. I hope you two don't think I'm blowing off your discs! They're great and I plan on getting around to responding soon! Yikes! 22 has arrived!
  13. Vint, Did you make that?
  14. So, you think history is scary and ridiculous??? For the record, I agree and disagree with that statement.
  15. Where in Boston???!!! I'm there.
  16. Yeah! We plan on making the trip to Wolf Creek. Who knows if we'll even hit Breckenridge the way Wolf Creek is shaping up. Wolf Creek is still a secret, right? Do you snowboard or ski? A friend of mine got a pair of Volkl Superstar 6-Stars this season. Holy Moses. Makes me want to put on a pair of skis again!
  17. Well, I replaced those Ride bindings this season with a new pair of the toe-strap variety. I was considering a pair of FLOW bindings, but decided against it. I just don't know anyone who uses them, so I didn't have any good info to go on. These toe-straps are fantastic! For those interested, I ended up with the Burton Missions. There is a Burton outlet not far from here, so it made sense. This is my first Burton product and I am impressed. Aside from the toe-strap, these bindings are way more adjustable than any that I had owned before. I'm loving them. I'm heading out to Breckenridge with my brother and a good friend in February to stay with good friend's brother. Freeeeee everything! I can't wait. I've been on the treadmill faithfully to get my cardio into shape for that thin air. Working my legs like hell too! I just need to get my back into shape. I was feeling it in the heavier snow last weekend. I wish I could snowboard year-round and not have to worry about atrophy. As an aside, I brought the iPod for the hell of it. I tried listening to it for one run and wasn't into it. I just don't like being detached from the mountain like that. It was worth a try though... This thread didn't get much of a response last year, but I thought I'd try again.
  18. I'd like to see your ESSENTIAL 10 yourmusic.com selections list from all of the members here. I made my first order last week and would be curious to see what you guys consider ESSENTIAL from the yourmusic.com selection. Box Sets can be included as well. Don't limit yourself to jazz, or if you really want to do it right, do a TOP 10 JAZZ SELECTIONS list, and so on by genre. Let the listings begin!
  19. I chose Speak No Evil because the web they weave on that disc is so damned elaborate.
  20. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE JURY, I'M JUST A CAVEMAN...
  21. Definitely! I really enjoyed listening to this and was able to identify a couple of tunes and a couple of musicians here and there, but never got the time to post my thoughts! I do plan on sending this to my Grandfather, who loves most of this music (not a fan of Bird's music still, but I'm trying), to see if he can identify most of this stuff. It should be fun. Thanks again!
  22. Huh... I always thought the lyric was "...just as good as we want!" "Walk" I actually like better. Either way, its called the Tighten Up, and you can do it. Tighten it up now.
  23. I haven't watched it yet, but my brother in law gave me Return of the Jedi on DVD this Christmas. What's different on this version than the original?
