  1. I had a great time in Dallas, TX a couple years back hanging out at Shawn Dudley's place with Sangrey and Milazzo. I don't know that I will ever have a chance to hang out with these guys again, but I would have loved to have made it a regular thing. We had a good time. I'm meeting Al Jones and Dave (shrugs) in a couple of weeks down in CT. Should be fun. It is funny. Al and I have been talking on the phone, emailing, trading music, etc. for about three years now. He's sent me a jpg of his family, but we've never met face to face. Nonetheless, I feel like we have a true friendship. I'm looking forward to hanging out with him. I also used to hang out with Doug Robinson (ADR) when I lived in Charlotte. Next time any of you are up near Providence, RI let me know! I'd love to hang out! :rsmile:
  2. Greenwood references title.
  3. I'd like to add something that I listened to last night for the first time in a while. Two discs actually. Bob Moses .:. Nishoma Quite a few cameos on this disc maintain a variety of sounds and Moses' composing/arranging just amazes me. Here I go recommending another drummer that composes music like a pianist! Moses and tap dancer, Jimmy Slyde trio on "Ask Me Now" with trumpeter, Rossen Zahariev to great effect. Complex and multilayered compositions make up most of the disc. I know Moses' ideology isn't that popular with most, but his drumming is second to none. What a sense of swing. Bill Stewart .:. Think Before You Think This is on Evidence. A definite sleeper in my collection. If you ever see this in a used bin, give it a listen. You will most likely end up taking it home with you. This is a great thread. I am going to look for many of these in the near future!
  4. That's true... none of them are eligible voters in the U.S. The title may be a double entendre. Radiohead equipment has been stolen many times. This may be the band's way of thanking the theives over the years that have helped the band continually change their sound. I've also heard "stolen" tracks from the latest album. Sounds a lot like the last two (KID A, Amnesiac). I am looking forward to hearing it nonetheless.
  5. Perry Robinson .:. Funk Dumpling Great playing by all involved (Kenny Barron, Henry Grimes, Paul Motian) plus she'll like the title! Very enjoyable music, and rereleased on CD fairly recently! Hey, if we all join together, we can make middle school clarinetists the coolest kids in school!
  6. I haven't heard any of the later period Larry Young or Big John Patton, so I can't really add anything to this thread other than: I love a lot of avant-garde/free jazz from the era and I love most of the greazy organ music from these two that I have heard. My imagination runs wild. One day this stuff will be available to the common man. I do own Minor Swing and Blue Mode and Les Stances a Sophie and I think they are all great in their own way. Blue Mode is downright Fonky. Minor Swing can seem a little contrived to me at times, but I love the concept. It definitely has its moments! Kenny Wolleson is baaaaaaaaad. For that matter, I love Tommy Derrick's sound on Blue Mode also! Check it out.
  7. I wish Gregg Bendian's INTERZONE album "Requiem for Jack Kirby" was more well known around here. Nathan turned me onto this tribute album a few years back, but I only came across it within the last 8 months or so. This is one of the most fantastic bands I have heard in a long time. Bendian commits to the vibraphone(voracious vibing/cataclysmic composing) for the extent of the album as Nels Cline joins on guitar(spectral plectra), Alex Cline on drum kit(polymorphic percussing), and Joel Hamilton on bass(boomtube bassery). The music attempts to parallel the world that Kirby illustrated for DC Comics. While it is hard to imagine a music that would parallel this world, I assure you Gregg Bendian gave his all to materialize such a sound. The music remains fluid throughout the entire disc and moves somewhat like the music on Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch!". This is an excellent disc, obscure and inprint on Atavistic. Gregg Bendian's Interzone .:. Requiem for Jack Kirby Atavistic ALP125CD ONE FINAL NOTE REVIEW
  8. Same here Soul Stream. Unfortunately, most of the albums chosen are not yet in my collection, so I have a hard time participating. I do love to read these threads though!
  9. OTIS. Hands down. Pure soul. OTIS definitely fits right into the soul singer description. He gained a great deal of notoriety in his lifetime and has continued to be recognized as a great, but I still say that he is underrated!
  10. We have Pete Yorn's first disc for Columbia. Reading your taste in rock music, I think you'll like his music. Hey, you might even love it. Good solid rock 'n roll. He is considered a "singer/songwriter" by some as well. Just to give you a ballpark, a few of my friends are big into Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt/Wilco, Ryan Adams, Elliot Smith and the like. They are also fans of Pete Yorn. Don't know anything about the other bands. Who's Foo Fighters?
  11. I like the cover. If I saw this as an LP in the dollar bin, I wouldn't think twice. The cover is so ODD! Paul Jeffrey: Seeing Eye Music. I've never heard Paul Jeffrey before. I will keep the recommendations in mind. Thanks for the tip Late, Lon.
  12. Wishing you a clear and logical thought process! (Closest thing I could think of to a greating card for someone writing a dissertation on musical plagiarism in a remote Swedish location.)
  13. Eleven is a fantastic number. What are you talking about?! First of all, it is prime. Second of all, it is the only prime two-digit number in an elite set (11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99) of two-digit numbers. Third of all, multiply it by any single-digit number. What do you get? Mirrors! See above set of elite two-digit numbers. 1x11=11 2x11=22 3x11=33 4x11=44 5x11="I drive ______!" 6x11=and so on. Fourth of all, eleven corresponds directly, alphabetically speaking, with the letter "k". "k" is the only letter in the alphabet that has an identically phonetic twin. See "c". For whatever reason, " 'insert number hear' of all" doesn't sound right after "third of all," at which point I begin to wonder what "of all" refers to. Eleven just rolls right off the tongue. The only good guitar amps go to eleven. Not to get all spiritual and religious and all, but on the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me eleven pipers piping. Is there any other logical day on the Roman calendar to give someone any number of pipers piping? I can't come up with one. Maybe November 11, but I think that is a bit early still. If I think of any more positive attributes to the number eleven, I will be sure to post them here. .:. I didn't vote. 2004 is an off year. EDIT: I originally mispelled "tongue" "tounge."
  14. Stereolab .:. I really hope they do continue on in some form... The Sea and Cake/Sam Prekop .:. First and foremost Pavement/Silver Jews/Preston School of Industry/The Jicks .:. the latest Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks album is excellent. Beck .:. I will continue to buy his albums for a long time. J Mascis .:. He should be considered "classic" by now. Elliott Smith Phish/Trey Anastasio .:. They get the short end of the stick for being a "jam" band. Radiohead Tortoise Cat Power I'm very interested in hearing more from Pretty Girls Make Graves.
  15. "Up Over and Out." Now that's a trademark. I remembered the name, but until I read "Up Over and Out," it didn't quite register! Welcome!
  16. Today: Big John Patton .:. Let 'Em Roll Just a warm-up for Blue Mode... Reuben Wilson .:. Blue Mode I don't own many Rare Grooves, but I can't imagine many better than this one. Bambu. Melvin Sparks. Tommy Derrick's drum kit. John Manning stretching out just enough to make you notice. Reub! Pavement .:. Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe Disc 2 I realized today how much of a difference the remastered Watery, Domestic and Watery Sessions make. Four tracks from a John Peel Session followed by a live show from Brixton 1992. I still love this band. Matthew Shipp .:. eQUILIBRIUM Khan Jamal. Blur .:. Think Tank I bought this on a recommendation and have not been disappointed. Stephen Thomas Erlewine shits on this album on allmusic.com, but I am really enjoying it. Maybe I should take his advice and check out some of the "good" Blur albums!
  17. Good to see you here Late! Well I've managed to acquire a copy of Andrew!!! I'll comment once it arrives and I've had a few opportunities to listen. I am still mad at myself for not putting the money down for the Mosaic set.
  18. "Impossible" was a word I used to describe Tony Williams' drumming or Eric Dolphy's bass clarinet when I first started listening to jazz. Being new to cyberspace when I joined the Blue Note board, I thought it would be a good idea to keep some sort of anonymity so I chose "impossible." I've been using it ever since. Strangely enough, I've tried to register here and there and "impossible" has been taken! IMPOSTER! My birth name, Cary Atwood Ralston Jr., is mostly geographical. The most interesting thing though is that all three names point to one general area in Scotland. Makes sense since most of my blood is Scottish, but I don't think my grandparents had geography in mind when they named my dad. He was actually named after Cary Grant because my Grandmother absolutely loved him. Atwood and Ralston are family names from our Scottish heritage.
  19. I ordered a copy today, but I'm sending it to my wife as a gift for finishing her first year of law school... we all win! tee hee. She loves guitar/organ/drum trios. I can't wait to hear it!
  20. Who is Webster Young?
  21. Interesting lists John B! I haven't participated in listening to thread in a while... Most recently: Jason Moran .:. Facing Left Dave Douglas .:. 22. I'm still wondering about this "scary concert!"
  23. Cheers everyone! This is the only bulletin board I ever check. I do look at bagatellen every once in a while, buy that's not really a bulletin board is it? I may not post that much, but I'm always reading. Thank you Organissimo.
  24. Rooster, I believe they also did something together called "Liferays." I would love to hear either of these! I think they can still be ordered through Steeplechase. I am not sure. I've never seen them anywhere though. Keep me posted! Thank yoU!
  25. Suddenly I remembered that Andrew!!! is one of my most sought after CDs. Other than that, the two Walt Dickerson/Sun Ra duets are way up there Larry Young Mothership I don't know. I haven't been searching much lately. Have you seen any of these?
