  1. Mad Men is addictive. Try The Walking Dead.
  2. Hm. I am not disagreeing with Dan, but the way I looked at steroids in baseball is the same way I would look at steroids in football. Neither have anything to do with statistics.
  3. Just to emphasize that Torkanowsky was easily the most dynamic pianist that I can remember hearing in person. He left a significant impression. I have no idea what his reputation is, or what his day to day music sounds like, but that afternoon he was doing anything he wanted and Porter/Modeliste were right there with him.
  4. And here is a brief review of the performance. I was amazed by Modeliste and Porter, knowing them from a strictly backbeat world. Hot damn. Torkanowsky was a discovery for me. It was revelatory to hear someone whose name I had never seen here or elsewhere, taking the music fluently and seamlessly in any and every direction with such technique. The horns were superfluous in my opinion. This was one hell of a trio! http://www.nola.com/jazzfest/index.ssf/2011/05/pianist_david_torkanowsky_take.html?mobRedir=false
  5. According to wiki, and there is an interesting bit at the end of the bio, he won a Grammy in 2007. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Payton
  6. I think I mentioned this once before, but I heard him play earlier this year down in Post New Orleans as a guest with a white pianist and two of The Meters for a tent full of white folks. He played fine. I have never knowingly heard him before or after, though I've known his name for some time, for some reason. For what it's worth, the white guy and the two Meters were playing some top-notched shit. Payton walked out in his football jersey, played strong, fast, high, then walked off. From what I can recall, he did pretty well. I think the white guy mentioned that Payton has a Grammy?
  7. Choose your food wisely. I'm not a doctor.
  8. Yeah. At least black fingernail polish for Jim. It would totally make these close-up shots.
  9. We bought one years ago from Target I believe. Method is the brand. Shouldn't matter. Microfiber with no cleaning chemicals is key.
  10. Don't forget, Ringo was in Schmilsson's wedding.
  11. microfiber cloth. no glass cleaner.
  12. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Logitech-Squeezebox-Boom-/220900322199?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336eaf6b97#ht_552wt_1375 Even better, though inexplicably discontinued from the line. Portable!
  13. Huh. Thanks Brownie!
  14. Any idea where this is? I can't seem to find any clue other than youku.com being a Chinese website. Or so it seems based on "trust certificates" ending in .cn
  15. Enable Java is definitely one of those musicians that should have been included in the "How Do You Pronounce" thread.
  16. I wasn't aware of the quality control issues. I've not bought any of the RSD exclusives because, as mentioned above, they aren't really geared toward me either. That is a real shame.
  17. I'm just trying to support some friends and a small business that I value.
  18. I think jazz would do well to associate itself with RSD. I live in a small city, third tier market. Aside from Squidco, who relocated here last year and is really a mail order house with a store front, we have one record store left. They do a good job with promotion. I went to RSD last year. Although they didn't have any of the exclusives that I wanted, the shop was absolutely packed. One hour in line to get rung up. It is a very successful marketing campaign based on extremely limited edition vinyl releases. I think both jazz labels, jazz fans etc. and record stores could benefit.
  19. Wouldn't you just ask your neighbor if you needed a plumber?
  20. Did you just coin the term "listening artist"? Ha. I know/hope you are trying to be provocative, but I think that notion perfectly defines the modern "hipster that is often railed against. Curators of, like, life. Perhaps you do consider yourself as such; the modern-day ghost writer's nom de plume's alter ego's ghost writer's nom de plume, curating life in multiple shades of anonymity. Hm. All that from "listening artist". Provocative fo sho.
  21. Credit Where Credit Is Due, I also got the initial caps thing from you. Just goofing around tonight. I love reading y'all's shit. Moms incl. Prob. thread-killing right now, but this thread was already dead. Ethically, it's ok to kill a zombie, no? Legally, it's still grey area. PS that Bennett Brauer reference... just fucking impressive Jim.
  22. Hm. I actually get that. Thanks for laying it out so plainly. I do feel like the Monk/Coltrane Carnegie Hall music sounds like ((and perhaps challenging is not the word (putting quotations around a word to change the meaning is So Sangrey by the way))), Monk is being inspired beyond his own imagination. You know I'm no good at this, so please bare with me. This has become a Brian Berger thread, so any syntax/punctuation rules are out the window. Pardon the paranthetical excuse/accuse.
  23. I guess that's where I am Chuck. Do I seem cooler if I talk shit about somebody doing their job, or do I seem cooler talking shit about their employer setting expectations that don't meet mine? I'm having a great time listening to Rouse right now. I don't at all wish he were someone else. I'm not much of a complainer anyway. It is what it is. Heard that for the first time up in New England. People don't say shit like that down South. They just smile. And complain to folks that can't change it. Shit. That's such a generalization! Who am I trying to convince? Rouse does his job well, but I don't think he is a threat to his boss. So, my question is who y'all think did challenge Monk creatively?
