  1. Themselves, and me. Because I only think what someone else writes. Thanks a lot Kurt Rosenwinkel.
  2. "Uninformed remarks" I think jazz's biggest problem is that it feels the listener has to be informed. Dumb old rock n roll has taken the same turn. Not everyone cares to read or talk about music. Some folks just want to listen, socialize, imbibe. If someone could please tell me where I fit in to this whole thing, I'll feel a lot more confident in my taste in music.
  3. Well this is one way to make a tiny potential fan base even more tiny. Yawn. I heard Nicholas Payton come out and play with David Tarkonowski, George Porter Jr., and Zigaboo Modeliste at NO Jazz Fest this past Spring. The group was called Fluer DeBris. He was guesting, but man was that rhythm section dynamic, empathic, exciting. Really great stuff and a complete surprise for me, only being familiar with Meters and various studio rhythm tracks. Wow. Too bad Rosenwinkel wasn't in that tent. Serious heat.
  4. Spacebomb Records is recording everything to tape. Vocals, rhythm tracks, horn sections, strings, chorus. Great label based around a versatile house band. All releases on vinyl only plus dub mixes available to limited download. http://spacebombrecords.com/
  5. Interesting point about country/americana (if you only like the old stuff). It seems to have come into its own either recently, or as I've grown older. I'm just in my thirties, mind you, but country music, hillbilly music, mountain music, roots bluegrass music, etc. etc. etc. all had a negative connotation growing up through the eighties and nineties. Was it the times, or my age? Seems that was the case with popular country acts too. Judging by their music, they have, and for the most part, continue to distance themselves from thiem cusins.
  6. Hard to say! You may luck out in the first few years... you may spend a decade trying to get it right. That's part of the reward right? The Quest! Check it. Nice experiment here, specifically Ambrosia seeds: http://www.mastergardeners.org/projects/ninepalms/2006/melon.html
  7. Well it's a seed, a varietal, so you could grow your own if you had the means. Do a search. Lots of great sharing these days online with regard to homegrown food and small scale farming! "Homesteading" has found a new generation...
  8. Although most honeydew I have had has never come close to even an average cantaloupe, there have been a few that almost (almost) beat out even my fondest cantaloupe memory. Yes to Ambrosia! As everyone has said, melons are best bought from local farms. And cantaloupe ripens extremely quickly in the fridge! Especially once sliced!
  9. I love this set. 2CD from Storyville I think? I bought a copy for my brother I love it so much! Recommended without hesitation.
  10. I remember liking that Fieldwork album. Leeway, the theoretical vibe might actually work in its favor on this one. Worth a listen...
  11. See, that cantaloupe looks perfect, but the honeydew looks like I just wasted my money on rind.
  12. Agreed.
  13. I can't wait to sit down and look through these. Glad to hear you have found another outlet.
  14. Great news! I have fallen behind the Juggernaut recently. Looking forward to making a purchase soon Chuck.
  15. I'm there. So far (over 6 weeks) three things have happened. Not much doin.
  16. Norfolk looks bad, based on photos from friends. Still no cable so I haven't seen Seidel standing in the surf fully clothed gasping and stammering for almost 12 hours now. I know what Dan is saying about folks not respecting weather, but it is folks like Seidel that set up shots into the wind, camera 100 yards away to decrease visibility etc that piss me off. Lots of reports of downed trees in Richmond VA. Lots of reports of downed trees AND widespread flooding in Norfolk VA. Please folks, take this situation seriously and encourage others to do so. Neal you seem to have a grasp on the situation. Keep us posted from up there. We've had dry bands for hours now! Still windy, and I'm still pumping water!
  17. The worst is behind us here. Still experiencing gusts. A couple of the older piers at Atlantic and Emerald lost their ends. We have minimal debris. No downed trees. Just leaves and pine tags. My neighbor has a couple of decent sized pine limbs in the yard. I'm pumping water from my crawl space with a sump pump. Flooding in low lying areas will be the biggest risk. The Outer Banks are extremely vulnerable to this storm, as is the northern neck region of VA and the Eastern Shore. I am thankful that the storm had weakened as much as it has, but the amount of rainfall and surge it will bring to coastal areas has major potential for disaster. Dr. Lyons gave a 20% chance of surge compromising Manhattan flood walls and flooding subway. I hope your mother fares well Dan. I hope my experience just 50 miles from landfall is comforting.
  18. Are you actually almost 800?! I knew there was something about you. Baby Face Milazzo. Happy Birthday!
  19. To which I said hell yeah Hell yeah chewy chew chew!
  20. In my experience, being in the northeastern quadrant of a hurricane is the most violent. The eye wall has collapsed and data suggests that this storm will not be able to stay as organized as it has, nor will it continue to gain strength. That is good news, except that the storm surges are estimated to be closer to those of a Cat4. This is a very high New Moon tide. Wherever the storm is during a crest will bring significant coastal flooding. Enough to change the coastline. I don't think anyone is suggesting that people should disregard warning, just that TWC has gone over the top with coverage of this particular storm. For better or for worse. No need to wish that someone's life is destroyed for lack of judgement. As you said, most regions are not accustomed to hurricanes.
  21. Without power, they'll be eating bread... Flash flooding here and there in the usual low areas of town. We are still in the early stages where a band of heavy rain and strong gusts run through. Its just me at the house right now, so I'm playing One Down, One Up pretty loud and looking at maps.
  22. Hurricanes are part of the deal down here. This storm seems to be particularly hyped by TWC. Over time, I'm afraid that this will turn into a cry wolf scenario and people will not take these storms seriously. If you understand anything about hurricanes, it is that they are extremely unpredictable up until 24 hours of landfall. Even now, this storm is turning further east. It may come back. It may move due north. Either way, folks that are in a warning or watch zone need to be prepared for the worst. Help your elderly neighbors to be sure they have their medications refilled for the week, etc. The outer bands have started here. Driving rain, swirling winds with low gusts. I'm off to the store for beer and non-perishables. Everyone please be proactive and stay safe. p.s. I'm a big fan of wundermap and the wunderground blogs. My wife also works for the county, so we are getting regular .ppt reports from emergency response and noaa with a significantly less sensational tone than what TWC is delivering.
  23. I think it should go without saying, but I'm sure we all do. All of it.
  24. Yep! Jack wins a good old-fashioned bender.
