  1. The Live at Club Baby Grand albums, along with certain selections from Live at Small's Paradise, for me, blow away everything else that I have by Jimmy Smith. Every live album up until The Sermon is so much more EXCITING than The Sermon and everything that came after. I really don't listen to many Jimmy Smith albums more than a few times after I first get them, but those up to 1958 grab my attention every time I play them.
  2. Tee Ball, Soccer, Basketball, Swim Team, Dive Team*, Little League Baseball, High School Wrestling**, High School Lacrosse *At one point in my early teens, I was on the training and competition schedule where the next step was Olympic trials (1m, 3m). I burned out. At this stage in my life, I can barely do a proper dive. **Aside from diving, snowboarding, this was probably where I had the most skill. I started out in the 103lb weight class. By Senior year, I was wrestling at 156. Years later, I still have the instinct to immediately go for wrist control when a friend pushes me, and am confident that I still have the upper hand in most situations if it comes right down to it. You wouldn't think that by looking at me. I know my center of gravity from all of my time on the mat in high school, and that is probably the most valuable thing I learned in all of my time in organized sports. Certainly helps on the slopes!!!
  3. Have you heard Project Project, or Chicago Luzern Exchange? All three are on Delmark.
  4. FIGHT THE BIG BULL | Dying Will Be Easy (Clean Feed 2008) *Disclosure: My brother plays bass in this band. I have posted about them here before, with a couple of blips here and there. A lot of people seem to be taking notice elsewhere, so I guess I'll just keep trying here... Read about it at Clean Feed's website. Obligatory myspace sound samples... mi3 | We Will Make a Home For You (Clean Feed 2007) I don't know if I have read anything about Pandelis here or not, but his time on the Fender Rhodes is time well spent to my ears. Read about it at Clean Feed's website. emusic.com samples Matana Roberts | The Chicago Project (CCI 2008) I think this one has gotten some attention here already... Rosaly, shit, the whole line-up is nice. emusic.com samples And Larry has sung praises about many of the current Chicago musicians that I have tried to stay up on the past two years (Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly, Jason Ajemian, the cast and crew of Exploding Star Orchestra, etc). I haven't been listening to "contemporary music" as long as many of you have, so I have are hard time saying what music I like and don't like, and why, but there is something about this current gathering of musicians in Chicago that have my attention. Not so big on Longberg-Holm, but he doesn't necessarily "ruin" things for me either. This is stuff off the top of my head. I have worked my way into the Clean Feed catalog over the past year or so as well. I will go through and find some examples sometime soon for the Clean Feed thread.
  5. All these years, I've been offering and receiving recommendations on separate threads here at org.org. So glad I now only have to read one thread. I expect this thread is spam-proof? Judging by other threads over the weekend, it appears that even jazz fans now agree that all jazz sounds alike. What is going on here?
  6. I didn't keep it. I couldn't connect.
  7. sorry to hear that big, but that is an entirely different d'angelo.
  8. Hey! Thanks! You'll be glad to hear that they are making a follow-up with Steven Bernstein this winter. They decided to scrap tapes with Vandermark due to lack of rehersal. I guess it just didn't work in the end. Looking forward to reading more about Matt Schneider from you Larry. You have piqued my interested recently.
  9. There's an entire forum called Recommendations!
  10. I've certainly tried to make our board members aware of a recent clean feed release (fight the bug bull) that my brother plays bass on, with less response than space equator...
  11. something from iron man's lab? i guess if i owned that turntable, i wouldn't even think of buying records under $30. does it require a sterile environment?
  12. when the f's d'angelo going to release another album?! i mean, seriously. is he becoming guns'n'f'n'roses?
  13. On another board (slimdevices), he asks for recommendations for Jeff Beck albums as possible xmas ideas, recalling that his dad used to play jef(f) beck albums when he was young, asking if this new one might be a good idea for a gift. is there a list of popular music boards out there somewhere that gets passed around? i only go to slimdevices for technical questions, so i was surprised to see it up there too.
  14. does sequins and skeletons really fit that list?
  15. prices? I'd be interested in science fiction.
  16. I was thinking the same thing Daniel. I know my uncle doesn't have a lot of this stuff and would certainly appreciate the music. I'd love to give him the CDs for xmas, but I hesitate to buy any of these lps until someone more knowledgeable than me has had a chance to inspect them. So who's going to go first?
  17. I'm guessing these are the "Scorpio" re-issues? I'm not on top of the vinyl reissues scene, so I'm now just trying to piece this stuff together. It looks like these are digital masters transferred to polystyrene?
  18. Are these the reissues you are asking about? I'm curious too. I wouldn't consider myself a "vinyl collector", so I'm not concerned about what's scribed in the dead wax. My stereo is not set up for audiophile criticism either. I guess I just don't want to buy an Analog>Digital>Analog Blue Note LP. Seems to miss the point there... I would definitely be interested in owning some of my favorites on vinyl though. I'd also be interested in some of the new reissues from the other BN vinyl thread... I'd like to hear more about these.
  19. MG, Bev... if you've ever heard someone say "Hell, its five o'clock somewhere!", your world has been invaded by Jimmy Buffet. Wearing a Hawaiian shirt in some in-land suburb, the funniest guy at a toddler's backyard birthday party will kick off the adult festivities tomorrow with that very line. Somewhere around 2PM. His buddy will reply, "Get'r done!" The fun begins.
  20. authentichendrix.com Does anyone have any of these?
  21. I think there was another thread about this already. Personally, I have a hard time paying $30 for a record. I've never paid that much for a CD. I have paid $30 for a 2LP...
  22. I will give you $201 for that kitten.
  23. I was thinking the same thing last night.
  24. I know this is not a MINGUS album, per se, but what's the consensus on Epitaph?
