What time do you get up?
jimi089 replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Usually around 6:15 or whenever my dog decides it's time to get up. Daylight savings time always throws a monkey wrench in that operation however, since his internal clock doesn't care what time the clock says. -
Got all three of these. The Bana Kadori is a beautiful, joyous record with some great tracks. It's a guitar-centric sound, and the whole album flows very nicely. There's one English spoken word section of a song, which is historically interesting but not particularly musical. Other than that, no complaints - you can hear samples at the CD Baby link above if you're interested. The Wendo Kolosoy and Kekele are two takes on the Congolese rumba, which is a fascinating cultural and ethnomusicological phenomenon. The Kekele is actually sung in Spanish, and seems to be a more standardized rumba, although I'm by no means an expert. Excellent musicianship and highly enjoyable. The Kolosoy seems to be a more personal take on the rumba, and since it's a collection of tracks there's a large variation in the material presented. I think I prefer the latter, although there's nothing wrong with the Kekele. The Kolosoy is also a soundtrack to a film of the same name about him that I'm going to try and hunt down. MG, that Amazones De Guinee album doesn't seem to have distribution in the US yet. Amazon is selling it as an MP3 album here but I'd much prefer the CD so I'm going to have to wait, unless I want to pay in pounds and get gouged by Sterns.

Can someone tell me which album is being discussed here? The original image of the album is gone and I can't decipher which disc it is from the thread. Thanks!

The Muscian's Experience vs the Enthusiast
jimi089 replied to Bill McCloskey's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, I don't think that's an inadequate response at all, FWIW. Also, just because you're a musician does not guarantee an ability to parse Roscoe Mitchell or Cecil Taylor - even if you transcribed and gave their music a thorough theoretical analysis, it would still be based on music theory, which is just one way to explain why music behaves the way it does. When you get musicians like Roscoe or Cecil, who were not only knowledgeable of traditional theory, but also autodidacts whose individual explorations created unique theories of their own, we have to come up with our own theories and ideas about how their music "works." -
I'll ask Ken Chaney next time I see him and let you know. I know they spoke.

Not exactly sure, I know he wasn't available for the gig though. They also reached out to Oscar Brashear but he wasn't available either.

There's going to be an Awakening reunion on March 28th here in Chicago. Original members Ken Chaney, Ari Brown, and T.S. Galloway, and then some ringers: Corey Wilkes, Josh Ramos, and Charles Heath. I'm told there will be mostly new music performed with a couple old tunes mixed in.

Just bought a copy of Bana Kadori - Agwambo after hearing a track on Chicago music critic Peter Margasak's radio show last weekend. The track I heard was just wonderful so I decided to buy the album. I'm also waiting on a couple recent orders: Wendo Kolosoy - On the Rumba River and Kekele - Kinavana I'll report back after they arrive and I've had a chance to listen.

Speaking of Light Henry Huff, Dee Alexander did a fantastic tribute to him last summer in Chicago. I still need to pick up that Dixon/Exploding Star.

I've really been enjoying this since I got it last week. Great grooves and the compositions work for me.

Thanks for the review of the show, I would have loved to see it. I have been meaning to pick the album up, maybe I will do so now...

Thanks folks!

Looks like we've got a Gal Costa reissue on the Dusty Groove label to look forward to in April. Any Bola Sete recommendations? I heard some beautiful guitar playing that turned out to be him recently.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
jimi089 replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Just got home from Jeff Chan, Francis Wong, Ed Wilkerson, and Tatsu Aoki at the Velvet. I caught one great set - some interesting compositions from Chan, and some very quiet delicate playing from all three reeds that complimented the more brawny blowing sessions that erupted at times. Overall a great set, highly enjoyable, and its always a pleasure to greet Fred Anderson and chat for a minute. -
Thought this might be of interest to folks here:

That's really interesting, thanks for sharing. It's difficult to filter these kind of issues from abroad.

I just started posting here recently and have found everyone to be helpful, hospitable, and knowledgeable. Obviously, your mileage may vary. I think you have to be willing to take some responsibility. It takes two to tango, as they say.

I was told not to click on this link...
jimi089 replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm man enough to admit when I've made a mistake. I clicked. -
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a starting point for Chico Buarque, as well as Edu Lobo? I know they have some albums together as well. I heard some stuff recently that was just gorgeous but don't know where to dive in. Thanks.

Some great recommendations in here. Thanks for starting this thread, I will reap the benefits as well.
