  1. They always do this at whatever company is set up to sell CD's. In the past, it had been the jazz record mart. Last year, inexplicably, it was best buy. Here, I'll explicate for you: $. Mark, Kidd and Fred are only doing Saturday/Sunday. Friday will be the Great Black Music Ensemble with special guests from that evening's AACM concert at the festival...
  2. Monday morning bump. Anything that doesn't produce some interest today will go up on EBay tomorrow. Get 'em while they're hot.
  3. I'm about to move and I'm admitting to myself what I can afford to keep around space wise, as I'm moving into a slightly smaller space. I've done some research as to the prices and have in all cases offered these below what they've been going for on ebay and elsewhere because I'd just as soon send them to a good Organissimo home. Some of them regularly sell for well north of the prices listed below but I'm not concerned with that. If you're interested in any of them let me know and I can send you some pictures of the covers/records and do a more detailed look at the sleeves/records to make sure I've graded them accurately - the only way the prices can move is down, so it's in your favor. I've already adjusted prices as best I could based on condition of the sleeves and records, but to be honest I'm not an expert at grading so I went on the very conservative side in that sense. Shipping is additional - I'm going to charge based it on actual cost - I can quote you a rough estimate once you PM me. If you want insurance/tracking I'd be happy to do that for the extra charge as well. PayPal only, if you're in Chicago we could arrange to skip the shipping and do an in person hand off. 10"s Gerry Mulligan Quartet - Pacific Jazz PJLP - 1 $50 Milt Jackson Quartet - Dee Gee 1002 $65 Miles Davis - Classics in Jazz - CAPITOL H459 $50 Miles Davis Quintet - PRESTIGE PRLP 185 $60 Jimmy Raney Ensemble Prestige Records 10 inch. 1103 $70 Modern Jazz Quartet PRLP 160 - $100 Billy Taylor Trio - Jazz At Storyville ROOST RLP 406 $25 Bud Shank and Three Trombones PJLP-14 $100 Johnny Smith Quintet w/ Stan Getz ROOST 413 $35 LPs Ellis Larkins - Lost In The Wood - $20 Vito Price - Swingin in the Loop (black label with silver lettering) Argo LP 631 - ON HOLD George Russell New York N.Y. 4. I was recently given a large stack of random LPs, some of them with some local Chicago significance. Two of the most interesting/odd ones are attributed to a band called The Night Pastor and Seven Friends, one of them entitled Plays Chicago Jazz, and the other entitled Music to Lure Pigeons By These are apparently their first and second albums, and they do feature some musicians I recognize: Eddie Higgins on piano, Chuck Hedges on clarinet on one album, Dave Remington (who appears to be the musical leader, cultivated by the night pastor Father Robert Owen), and Jerry Fuller. I haven't turned up any information online on either album. If anyone has any information I'd be interested to know. If any Chicago jazz-o-philes have any curiosity to own these gems, make me an offer The Night Pastor and Seven Friends Play Chicago Jazz - Featuring Dave Remington (trombone), Johnny Porazzo (guitar and banjo), Norman Murphy (trumpet), Joe Levinson (bass), Andy Johnson (piano), Jerry Fuller (clarinet and tenor) and bob Cousins (drums). Claremont Record Company, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The Night Pastor and Seven Friends - Music to Lure Pigeons By - Joe Levinson (bass), Bob Cousins (drums), Johnny Porazzo (guitar), Ed Higgins (piano), Dick Ruedebusch (trumpet), Dave Remington (trombone and piano), Father Robert Owen (piano), Chuck Hedges (clarinet), Jack Brand (drums on Tenderly). Claremont Record Company, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
  5. That post brought to you by the Department of Redundancy Department. BeBop, what were you doing in Sudan!?!
  6. In addition to what Larry mentioned... Corey Wilkes is at the Showcase from Thursday - Sunday - his band should include Robert "Baabe" Irving and others - it's going to be a Quintet Ernest Dawkins Trio w/ Fred Anderson as you mentioned Fri/Sat at the Velvet Frank Catalano does indeed to Wednesdays late night at the Mill If I were only in the US for five more days, I'd go see Von Freeman tomorrow (Tuesday) night at the New Apartment Lounge. If you have any interesting world music, there is a large group of Sudanese musicians playing a free show in Millennium Park on Thursday at 6:30 PM, free.
  7. Yes, and even harder to find if you post the cover image but don't tell us the title
  8. FYI, Dusty Groove has reissued the Jorge Ben (1969) album and it is now available.
  9. I'll probably be there tomorrow for Barry Harris. Let me know if you want to meet up next weekend Mark, I'll go see Charles McPherson.
  10. I thought this was pretty interesting. I know the Dakota (in Minneapolis) booked the group for the Sunday before this appearance but they are billing it a little different: Still Black Still Proud:PeeWee Ellis & Fred Wesley I bought tickets after seeing Maceo because the guy that books the show said it would be an African drum ensemble with Wesley and Ellis playing the music of James Brown. If Hargrove will actually be there as well that could be quite an added bonus but for I don't think it is likely he will be playing uncredited. Yeah, the Jazz Institute is bringing in Roy Hargrove for this show only - otherwise the same lineup as far as I know with a different billing.
  11. Don't give up, it's worth waiting for. My favorite recent purchase is Pade, a release by Kiko Dinucci and Jucara Marcal. You can check out some of the tracks on Jucara Marcal's myspace page - great writing, stripped down arrangements, and I think Marcal's singing is divine. I got my copy from a seller on ebay in Brazil - I think it's available from CD Universe and Amazon now. I'm looking forward to finding Kiko Dinucci's forthcoming disc with his AfroMacarrônico band. I'm unclear whether it's available now or not, but it should be released soon if it's not. I also recently picked up Som Imaginario - Manteca de Porco - a fascinating album - through composed music that has elements of progressive rock, and a whole lot more. I'm having difficulty encapsulating it here but I've really been digging it.
  12. Picked this LP up for a dollar from a garage sale several years ago. Good buy, great album.
  13. Very cool - is he traveling with his own band?
  14. I was there for the live performance and wasn't impressed enough to want to check out the recording. I certainly enjoyed it but it didn't strike me as something that desperately needed to be released as a recording.
  15. Buy Arthur immediately! Great album.
  16. Dee Alexander! It's really a shame that she doesn't have a recording released nationally that I can recommend (she has self produced several recordings that she sells at her shows). I hope that changes soon, since for me she is the best around.
  17. I found out that the Victor Deme album is digital only, no pressings of it happening anywhere, so I bought the MP3s from Amazon. The album excellent - he has a well worn voice with beautiful tone and vibrato, and the songwriting and musicianship is top notch throughout. Highly recommended. The Etran Finatawa album has held up well since I got it. I don't think it conveys the vibrancy of the live concert I saw, but it is still an excellent recording.
  18. I just received word that Franz Jackson passed away this morning.
  19. The site belongs to a friend of mine. Very nice guy, if anyone's in Chicago and would be interested in seeing his collection he loves showing it to people and I could get you in touch.
  20. Don't know how many Waits fans hang around these parts but I figured it might be of interest to some of y'all. Looks like I'll be taking a roadtrip from Chicago to catch a show. A typically Waitsian press conference on the tour can be viewed here:
  21. Honestly, I didn't think it had been "officially" announced yet. I posted a thread about the preliminary announcements here.
