Take another look at that box, grasshopper... -
Favorite Free Jazz/Avant Garde Box Sets

Oh wait I know - Iskra 1903 Chapter One (1970-72) - Rutherford/Bailey/Guy Is it OK if I mention one I maybe no longer like quite so much? That's the Sam Rivers Blue Note Mosaic. Gave that a play over the last few days and...found myself wondering... Somebody now mention the Andrew Hill Blue Note Mosaic and all boundaries between the avant-garde and the vaguely modernistic disappear entirely... Oh and finally the only reason no-one mentions Coltrane is (a) he's a straight winner in the avant-garde category but (b) the classic quartet Impulse box is a dead loss. Which leaves us with the VV box as the sine qua non of the jazz avant-garde. TA-freakin'-DA. -

If we are including Ornette and Ayler we have to include Coltrane and Miles...so it is hard to set proper boundaries in this thread...but for me I neither like nor want avant-garde box sets outside the classics...EXCEPT the recent FMP memorial which has a great book but is a bit uh pricey...and which I therefore don't yet own... -
Count Basie Verve Mosaic running low
David Ayers replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Too right. Talk about monkeys and typewriters eventually coming up with Shakespeare... -
Are there any box bargains currently available?
David Ayers replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Not the beginning of the end, not even the end, this seems like the aftermath... -
Just saw this statement on the Emanem site, maybe it has been there some time: This and the Leo sale made me wonder how much longer for labels like this. Leo has lost its (eccentric, ogg) download facility, Emanem has never had one. Both labels have some notable titles, but each has a large catalogue of other titles which I suspect move very slowly indeed (and which probably only made the barest economic sense back when a new CD cost the same as the Lord of the Rings box set but uh maybe not for quite the same investment). I also wonder about labels that continue to be CD only - so people don't even have the opportunity to pay for downloads.

We think it' his Los Totopos quartet. I mentioned it in the Hemphill thread and posted youtube link.

When you can snatch the pebble from my hand... Like the look of the NEW new releases?
-
It's now January... I thought that might be the case when I got the new Mosaic brochure yesterday without any release date at all. That's too bad for Mosaic. I imagine they were planning a Christmas release. gregmo They still do the brochure? I guess I got pushed off the mailing list as I have been mainly euromosaic these last few years. That makes me some kind of traitor... ...though mind you I certainly seem to have quite a few of them here... ...I even bought ones I either wouldn't like or would never play... ...still... ...it's ok...

Those are like ancient man. Here's what's upcoming: PS it would be great if you could edit down those press releases a little...

So sorry to hear that. Maybe it's time to be remastered Thankfully I am PD so I'll wait for Mr Jordi to reissue me. -

Fine but where does this stop. Why didn't you delete this: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/67044-anyone-know-about-a-cd-of-miless-paris-bcasts/ - ? -
Was that part of the tentet concerts (I was there only for the middle one), or was it a separate gig? It's also on LP and there seem to be under 40 minutes of music. Anyway I love those Sonore records and I love those musicians, so I am most definitely in. It was the opening set on one of the Tentet evenings (hence short duration) or at least that's my assumption as I'm not aware of that line-up playing Oto at another time. It was highly concentrated music-making and I'd suggest the shorter running time might suit the music Thanks - I thought perhaps that was it. The short duration also reflects the LP format! That said I'll get the CD. I do like the 'interplay' of this trio, if that word is not a cliche. Unlike a conventional sax/bass/drums type trio where the roles are defined and somewhat hierarchical even where the roles have been 'liberated' according to free jazz models, this trio is even more about negotiation and collective composition. Oh and deferring to Brotzmann from time to time of course...

The vinyl is very findable - I guess you want it on CD... Yep. Has it ever been reissued on CD? I don't think it has - that's why I thought that 'hard to come by' understated the case!

I don't honestly know what influences the algorithm. I had the impression that sales moved the price up, but if you take for example the list of impulses I posted and order it by 'popularity' the prices are all mixed, so it isn't really obvious. I have items in my basket and watch them go up and down... but get past caring, too much of a game... though you can do well on sudden and substantial price drops...

That's a great article - thanks for posting the link!

I get it. If people start to buy something, you put the price up. But the manipulativeness seems so outrageous. Check out this kaleidoscope: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search/ref=sr_adv_m_pop/?__mk_en_GB=%C5M%C5Z%D5%D1&search-alias=popular&unfiltered=1&field-keywords=&field-artist=&field-title=&field-label=impulse&field-ean=&field-browse=&field-price=&field-binding_browse-bin=&emi=&sort=relevancerank&Adv-Srch-Music-Album-Submit.x=0&Adv-Srch-Music-Album-Submit.y=0#/ref=sr_st?unfiltered=1&qid=1322350756&rh=n%3A229816%2Cp_33%3Aimpulse&sort=-releasedate

Gil Evans Orchestra's (not really) "Into The Hot" (1961)
David Ayers replied to DobermanBoston's topic in Artists
I think alternates were recorded but were never issued. The Taylor tracks which appeared on Impulse A-9 were later issued on the Taylor/Rudd compilation, Mixed. -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oto-Sonore/dp/B005ILLG3G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322342150&sr=8-1 Will be good. BTW I notice most of the threads in New Releases are about work by dead artists. Oh and this looks good too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sketches-Ballads-Full-Blast-Friends/dp/B005ILLG4K/ref=mb_oe_a Also on vinyl.
