This AM: Bill Evans Trio - Live (Verve, 1964) Billy Usselton Sextet - His First Album (Kapp, 1957) The Evans features what might be his most textbook playing. I like it though. The Usselton is nice. This is the original pressing, but it was reissued by Fresh Sound. Intriguing front line of tenor, bass clarinet, and trombone. Well arranged, but not overarranged, with Usselton sounding kind of like Paul Desmond on the larger horn. But just kind of.

I have The Blue Potato. FWIW it's on Spotify and Amazon. Great record, really worth looking out for. A shame the ESP won't be out on CD, but like I said initially the LP doesn't go for much on eBay.

Anyone get the Hemphill/Kowald? That's one I want for sure.

Each year he teaches a seminar at the NEC on a particular artist: Mingus, Vaughn, Silver, Ornette, etc. His course packs are now available on his site. They're rather pricey at $50 but I'd be very interested in picking up at least one of them.

I have heard precious little of his playing, just a cut on the Silkheart sampler, but I'd love to hear more. An interesting guy. Patrol eBay or Dusty Groove for Rhythm X. I've seen multiple copies turn up both places recently for less than $20

No need for more content in my house, where this record is a staple. One of the best ever made, IMO.

Steve Lacy - The Gleam Grabbed this off ebay for $5 thinking it was the CD and was pleasantly surprised when the LP showed up in the mail.

Ran is one of my favorite musicians. Phrases like "true original" and "blurring categories" get thrown around a lot but for him they apply completely. Jazz, repertory, improvisation, recomposition, third stream ... you simply can't call his music anything but his own and I admire that. His admixture of jazz, showtunes, blues, gospel, Motown, noir, and classical is also just highly attractive to me in it's component parts. But I don't see too much talk about Ran on here, though I'm certain he has his admirers. I have about a dozen of his records, but have listened to many more. I plan to own them all one day. Thankfully, or perhaps sadly, competition for them is nonexistent on eBay. He has also been quite prolific in the last couple years, releasing duos with Christine Correa, Sara Serpa, David Fabris, and Dominique Eade as well as a solo recital. I have heard a few of them and they're up to standard. His most recent album is a tribute to Abbey Lincoln that looks thrilling. He has also cut an album of George Russell music forthcoming on HatOLOGY. So: thoughts? Favorite recordings?

Will this be archived? I read about it on his mailing list and thought how splendid it would be to hear.

One of the best albums of the 60s IMO. Absolutely incredible. I treasure this one.

This is, unfortunately, the first I've heard of him but he sounds right up my alley...I dig the clip posted above. RIP. Any recommendations?

Note I said "early part". Obviously this changed by the mid 60s when Lacy started writing, and indeed became one of the preeminent composers of the post-60s era.

Thanks, I've had trouble nailing some things down to due the flurry of a) different series and b) numerous reissues, often across those series. I think Hat Hut would make for a great coffee table book. The art, and the various permutations of it, is incredible. Call Taschen!

Can't speak to the first one, but the BYG is the original. You can get it from Dusty Groove for about $8 new. Sound is good enough to me, not amazing; doesn't need to be IMO.

I can only pine for the big box, but I love the mid-forties stuff, maybe even more than the early 40s.

Universal Canada released all the Haden music from that week out previously on Verve in a box set that I highly recommend for people that don't already have this stuff. Not a wasted minute across five CDs.

Huh. I placed an order for some HatOLOGY titles last month and it didn't even ship til 15 days after I placed my order. I wonder if they don't have these on hand or what, but it has happened before with them.

That Monk set is pointless. Why not just do all his Columbia sides?
