Sorry to say that the Starbucks is the best I've ever had, by far (even though that's not saying a whole lot). The next closest is Mexican Nescafe.

I would say in fact that I do: Miles Davis Quintet, "If I Were a Bell" from Relaxin'-- it just doesn't get any better than that. Everything about it is perfect to me: Miles' blend of the sweet and the cool; a great simple arrangement; superb backing from PJJ and (especially) Mr. PC; great solos from Miles, Red and Coltrane (maybe the most melodic solo he ever laid down...someone-- I think it was Jack Chambers-- said that the solo was unexceptional and that Trane didn't do enough, but I think it's exactly what the song calls for, he sticks with the melody and just works on it a minute). Everything I love about jazz in under 10 minutes. What about you?

Yep. I think it's a done deal. ENJOY! Honestly though now that I think about it, how can this not cost $500+? No way could I afford that. Hopefully the pricing will be a bit more reasonable ...

This may be a longshot, but if anyone has a copy of this LP and would like to get rid of it, PM me with details. I'm not entirely sure this is an authorized recording, but I dubbed a library LP a while back and absolutely love this performance.

I would definitely recommend that. Great variety, any of the discs at random is a good listen. Also a fine alternative to the masssive Mingus box.

How do people end up with these partial sets in the first place? I see people on Ebay selling them all the time, like LPs 4-10 of the Miles/Trane box, etc.

Not to bitch overmuch, but I think for 16 damn dollars shipping, my Mosaic set that I ordered on a Sunday oughn't be beat to my door by an Amazon Marketplace order (Duke Pearson Select!) I ordered the following Wednesday and paid 2.99 to have mailed.

As it so happens, I just read the booklet for the Takin' Off RVG the other day. Herbie had been working on the song during 1962 and actually played it in an unfinished form while working with Santamaria in that year. Alfred Lion heard the performance and was floored by the tune and encouraged Herbie to finish it, which he did. Obviously, it was the cornerstone of the debut, which was recorded May 28, 1962. Mongo's version was recorded later that year.

I confess I know nothing about these sessions, but maybe these are the only tracks Lucky played or soloed on? Or perhaps they're just going for more of a compilation thing this time around as opposed to the usual "complete" route, in which case I personally trust their judgment.
