The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady-- What else can you say? It's utterly thrilling and just overwhelming. I could listen to it every day. Props obviously go to Charlie Mariano, but let's not forget Jerome Richardson's killer soprano work-- his first solo may be the highlight of the record for me. And Dannie Richmond is in fine, fine form too. The apogee of Mingus' conception. Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus-- I have to have a Dolphy record on here, and while he's in searing form on At Antibes and solid on Cornell 1964 and Town Hall Concert, I ultimately choose this one because I love the small group. All four cuts are fantastic, but "Folk Forms" is my favorite. This is one of Mingus' more integrated performances, so I like that about it; he's just part of the quartet and the interplay is superior. Ted Curson and Dolphy make a great reductive front line. Mingus Ah-Um-- I wish I could put something less obvious in this slot; Pithecantropus Erectus, Blues & Roots or At the Cafe Bohemia/Mingus Quintet would all be fine choices, but I cannot deny how much I enjoy this record, though interestingly enough it took many times through to really come to get it. A truly peerless programme, though, this is. The alto/tenors/trombone frontline makes it truly distinctive and Mingus may have never played better. Booker Ervin is a highlight throughout and John Handy holds his own, but Horace Parlan's solos are always welcome. What I really, truly enjoy and admire about all of Mingus' work though is the heights to which he pushes his sidemen. There are truly few (or no) boring performances on his classic sides and you can simply feel his direction in everything he did. For me, only Miles can be said to be a better small group leader.

Is the Jamal just Argo, or Chess/Argo? -
Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting

You're on a roll, JAW, keep it coming! I will pre-order this one for certain. -

Also 1.99 on Mulligan Meets Monk, Gerry Mulligan Quartets In Concert (JATP) and Gerry's Telarc recordings. -
Yeah, it was reissued in the Verve Master Edition series.
-
Oh, OK. For some reason I always thought Body Meta was on Verve, but I guess I was just conflating that w/ Dancing in Your Head.

Did Ornette record anything else for the label? Sounds like good fodder for Mosaic's first Ornette project

Good point. -
I actually received the set today, but got no response when I contacted them before ... Hell if I know why it took so long; maybe yours got shipped late? I would try calling them at 1.800.685.2163

I think that's what happened with my aforementioned Movie Mars order: Alexander Von Schlippenbach's Monk's Casino for $11.43. Seemed far too good to be true -

I enjoyed it very much, but I also feel like he sometimes over-emphasizes the "critical" in "criticism". -
No clue, but some names that have been floated include Keith Jarrett (Atlantic), Miff Mole, and Lucky Thompson.

I've been waiting over three weeks for a Movie Mars order, with no shipping notice or anything (even though my card was charged upon purchase). I sent an e-mail inquiry today but have yet to hear anything back. -
I just shot them an order for the Bix and the Chambers Select.
-
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't skeptical. I wouldn't be surprised to see them shut down in the next few years. But then again, I'm a pessimist when it comes to these things.

Bix/Trumbauer/Teagarden now in "Running Low"
colinmce replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Granted, my mind is mostly made up re: buying this set, but I would still like to know how much overlap there is with the JSP Bix/Tram set as far as those 4 discs of material go; I know the Mosaic is a 7-disc. -
CD sale on SF Craigslist

I sent him a list of about a dozen titles. I'll be interested to see what's available still. I really hope I can grab that Lou Donaldson 4/5/6 record, I've been looking for that one. -
Sounds like Tal Farlow's Verve sides fit the bill. There were released in their entirety in a 7xCD box set by Mosaic records, but that set is now out of print. Arguably the best album collected therein, The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow, is still available separately. There are also two compilation discs that cover this period, Verve Jazz Masters 41 and Tal Farlow's Finest Hour, both of which can be found on Amazon.

I'd like to get some early Torme material-- any recommendations on which discs give the best overview of his early sides with the Mel-Tones, on Musicraft, etc.?
-
Stopped by the consignment store and grabbed this on CD: Plus a few odd LPs: Dave Brubeck Quartet/Jay & Kai at Newport (Columbia) Joe Newman + Wess, Foster et al - The Count's Men (Jazztone) Manny Albam Orchestra + The First Modern Piano Quartet - A Gallery of Gershwin (Coral) The Perasuasive Trombone of Urbie Green and his Orchestra (Command) Not sure what to expect out of those last two. The Piano Quartet consists of Eddie Costa, Johnny Costa, Dick Marx and Hank Jones. Not bad for a 10 minute speed-scan of their disorganized and unreliable stacks.
-
Yep, nothing here. I'm contacting them.

A question: Is there anything NOT on these discs that IS on the Bill Evans Riverside box? Also, am I forgetting anything? Tenderly New Jazz Conceptions Everybody Digs Bill Evans On Green Dolphin Street Portrait In Jazz Explorations The Complete Live at the Village Vanguard Solo Sessions Vols. 1 & 2 How My Heart Sings! Moonbeams Know What I Mean? Interplay Loose Blues Live at Shelley's Manne Hole Time Remembered I'd love to get the box one day, but I'm 3/4 of the way there with the individual issues, so I'll continue on with those.
-
You mean they'll get halfway through the same old titles before discontinuing the series.

Jackie McLean - Hipnosis 2xLP, 6.95 on ebay. Just when I felt like I was getting closer to having all of Jackie's Blue Notes, I did a rescan of his discography and realized I still have quite a ways to go. Oh well.
