Amazon is having a box set sale, consisting mostly of JSP and Concord titles. The latter aren't much of a deal, but the JSPs are 15.99 or so apiece. I picked up the Coleman Hawkins pre-war set.

I missed out on Too Many Salty Swift..., but I did pick up some nice stuff there including Myra Melford's Even the Sounds Shine and Theo Jorgensmann's To Ornette - Hybrid Identity for $7.98 each. Great prices, but be prepared for a challenging search through their lists to find the stuff you want. I just devote some time every few weeks to searching 'jazz' by genre, making sure to check CDs so it doesn't get cluttered with DVDs. It usually turns up around 500 items. You can also search by label. Oh, and I've discovered that the Cecil Taylor set only goes for 14.98 at JazzLoft, half what most outlets who do stock it are asking.

Though I'm not one to care about these things usually, that sounds like something that would turn me off. The most-recent Virgin mastering sounds great to me-- flat and muddy, which is what the album calls for.

What 'needle-drop' music are you referring to here? The originally released tracks on the solo Select. But weren't the masters unavailable?

I'd like to hear the Dolphy, but am having trouble finding it. Any links?

I'd be curious, too. The other one looks so lonely on my shelf ...

Arthur Blythe - Blythe Spirit (Columbia 1981) Oliver Lake - Gallery (Grammavision 1986) Haven't listened to the Lake yet, but the Blythe is out of sight! Three different ensembles-- a quintet with cello and tuba, a quartet w/ Steve McCall, and another quintet with tuba and organ. I've not yet been all that able to get into Lenox Ave. Breakdown, but this one is much more my speed. What a fantastic record, a shame it'll never make it to CD. I recommend seeking it out.

I finally picked this up yesterday and give it a couple listens. Very good stuff. This is my first time hearing Chris Potter and ... I'll just say that I need to listen more to get a better sense of his contribution. On first glance he does seem a bit dull, but I'm open to the notion that further listening with reveal more tact and complexity in his playing. It's wonderful to hear Moran play such subdued music, he can be such a lyrical player, something it's easy to forget on his leader dates, where I think his Andew Hill influence predominates. As far as Motian being undermiked, I disagree. I've heard recordings where he's way overmiked (Charlie Haden's Montreal Tapes comes to mind) and it doesn't suit him. I think it's his unique ability to dominate this music at such a volume.

Bidding for Mosaics always escalates in the closing hours. It's pretty rare for them to go cheap. Even so, I am always a fan of offering a Buy-It-Now price. If you set it up as an auction, it doesn't preclude people from bidding and if someone is intrepid it can be over and done with. That said, I find that the Buy-only auctions are often majorly overpriced. Good luck to the guy selling that Kenton for $350 bucks.

Ack, I'm so on the fence about the Johnny Richards! I want it, certainly, but I've spent too much money on OOP Selects in the last couple months as it is.

That would be a delight, but I imagine the licensing would be a nightmare. Then again, who knows. I was very surprised to see them get material leased (owned?) by Hat.

I enjoy them both, the Ware maybe moreso.
