  1. Have another 23 or so I'm waiting to pull the trigger on. That should be all I want.
  2. If I bought each of those Coltrane boxes, would I be missing any dates, sideman or leader? And which? Seems so, as both together are less than the old 16-disc box.
  3. Yeah, ordered 21, was just charged for 20. We'll see when and how they show up.
  4. Ordering tomorrow: Art Pepper - Winter Moon Charles Mingus - Right Now Sonny Rollins - Freedom Suite Shelley Manne - The Gambit Shelley Manne - The Three & The Two Al Haig - Trio & Sextets Johnny Griffin - Big Soul Band Johnny Griffin - Change of Pace Duane Tatro - Jazz For Moderns Gene Ammons - Jammin' in Hi-Fi Wilbur Ware - The Chicago Sound Frank Rosolino - Free For All Ken McIntyre - Looking Ahead Barney Kessel - Poll Winners Teddy Charles - New Directions Might go back for the Griffin White Gardenias date, some more Manne and Rollins, the John Dennis, maybe Chet's Lerner & Lowe set...we'll see how much longer this goes on I guess.
  5. Actually I'm encouraged by this. I've hoped they'd go back to some of the late Fantasy ideas on intelligent assembling of reissue material as opposed to just the straight reissues. This is a much more cost-effective and cohesive presentation of the material than the splintered "originals". Yeah, but I think it depends. I would love to see more box sets like the late Fantasys, but not like this. It overblows the Miles/Sonny "partnership" into something that it's not and rehashes well-worn material that is best served by the "originals". What I would like to see is something like a complete Dolphy Five Spot set, a Jaki Byard or Booker Ervin or Teddy Charles or Shelly Manne set. This suggests to me that they're only interested in rehashing the "hits" as opposed to digging deeper into the catalogue to collate worthy material intelligently. But maybe you're right, maybe it's a good sign. Anything is better than more Essentials.
  6. Sorry, this is lame. They've reissued these very albums within the last two years!
  7. Just got the Debut and Prestige boxes at FYE for 12.99 and 17.99 respectively.
  8. I'm pleased with the find. Though I checked Amazon last night and the CD box is down to $40. A couple months ago only one was available at $200!
  9. Fletcher Henderson - A Study in Frustration $25
  10. same Same again. Exciting!

    Rare Blue Notes

Get used to it. It's probable that these will be the last official CD issues of these albums ever.
  12. I noticed that the price has skyrocketed. I'm kicking myself for sleeping on it when I originally read this thread.

    Rare Blue Notes

In this vein (and speaking of non-BN BN CDs), Kenton's City of Glass has been fully discontinued on Amazon and is already listing at $27 used. BTW, last year's deletions are dropping like flies in this same manner so don't delay.

    Rare Blue Notes

Yeah, this thread is only gonna get longer as the next couple years pass by ...
  15. I'll be fascinated to see what kind of prices the Selects start to command on ebay. As much as the big boxes? Makes sense, yet seems somehow hard to imagine.
  16. As for High Frequency, I would say don't hold your breath, but there will be more Blue Note issues/reissues in the future, that much has been confirmed.
  17. And the others are: Right Now Jacknife It's Time Action Consequence correct?
  18. Dammit, I can only buy one (even though I can technically afford neither). I think it will be the Weston.
  19. Probably not. I'd say it requires a very specific interest to be enjoyed.
  20. I thought Haig's Jazz Will o' the Wisp was originally on Esoteric.
  21. I direct you to a recent interview w/ Cuscuna (http://www.openskyjazz.com/blog/?m=200905): "The Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder series will continue to revisit more Blue Note classics. But the Blue Note vault is tapped out of releasable unissued material. That’s why we started what we call internally the discovery series, looking to outside sources for new discoveries. And we hit with a megaton bang starting it off with the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall. Charles Mingus At Cornell, and Horace Silver at Newport 1958 followed. We have a killer Freddie Hubbard album Without a Song - Live in Europe coming in June. Freddie was thrilled with this music - he told me he thought it was some of his best playing ever captured on tape. He was going to do a lot of press for it but alas… We are working on material by Andrew Hill and Wes Montgomery next."
  22. I really don't know why I didn't just get the Parlan.
  23. Can you explain more about what this is?
