  1. Anyone out there with spare copies of 1. Discs 1 & 2 of the Giuffre Mosaic set (have the remaining discs, booklet & box) 2. The box to the Goodman Capitol set (have the discs & booklet) Thanks in advance
  2. Now I am getting excited!!! Here's the list of his Columbia releases (8 LP's & 3 EP's) - you could manage a Mosaic Select with #'s 1-6 & 10 (other 4 are collaborations) but I would prefer a "big box" Mosaic, covering all of this music & maybe throw in "Free Form" If a Mosaic was done, that would have to be one of my buy's of the decade!! 1. JH Quartet - Col EP SEG 7665 (rec 1955) 2. Blue Harriott - Col EP SEG 7939 (rec 1959) 3. A Guy Called Joe - Col EP SEG 8070 (rec 1960) - The Jazzland Southern Horizons LP 937 was a compilation of this & the "Blue Harriott" EP 4. Abstract - Col LP 1477 (rec 61-62) 5. Movement - Col LP 1627 (rec 63) 6. High Spirits - Col LP 1692 (rec 64) 7. Indo-Jazz Suite - Col LP 6025 (rec 65) 8. Indo-Jazz Fusions - Col LP 6122 (rec 66) 9. Indo-Jazz Fusions II - Col LP 6215 (rec 67) 10. Personal Portrait - Col LP 6249 (rec 67) 11. Hum-Dono - Col LP 6354 (rec 69) BTW Alan Robertson's OOP book on JH (Fire In His Soul - Northway Publications) is being republished this May with minor alterations
  3. Has Mosaic ever covered a non US jazz artist/group? What about a Joe Harriott Columbia Box - He released/coreleased 8 LPs & 3 EPS two of which were combined into a further LP Most of this material has never had CD release (4 LP's have but are now on the endangered list) This would be too big for a Mosaic Select & would require the Big Box treatment. Any support out there for this? While we're on the subject the Gearbox label has released an LP only recording of a 1962 BBC session.
  4. Wonder what the $4200 vinyl item was??
  5. I've noticed that the 3 CB Criss Cross CD's (Blues For A Reason, Chet's Choice & Live At Nicks) are all OOP & are not listed on the CC website. These are all great late period recordings & I'm surprised that they have been deleted. These would be consistent sellers for the label, so i'm wondering if there are legal issues here with CB's estate etc? (or maybe they are in the process of being remastered). Anyone out there with some inside information?
  6. I'm interested in obtaining the two Stitt early 70's Cobblestone/Muse sessions, Constellation & Tune Up - they tend to be highly regarded I'd appreciate some advice on the "best" sounding CD version to date ie Two individual Muse CD's (early 90's), single 32 Jazz CD (late 90's) or the most recent Spanish (Gambit) single CD issue. There are probably Japanese versions also. I've read that the Gambit pressing/mastering sounds pretty good!
  7. pm sent on 1. Dennis Gonzalez - Home 2. Gunter Hampel – The 8th of July 1969 3. Hal Russell NRG Ensemble – The Hal Russell Story 4. Sonny Stitt – The Last Stitt Sessions Vol.1&2
  8. Don't know the answer to your question, but I have always wondered why the CD credits BOTH Hampton Hawes AND his pseudonym of Henry McDode. Does either version of the LP do the same? Excellent, underrated record BTW. Wow, didn't realise that McDode was HH!! found a good list of jazz pseudonyms http://list.dincom.co.uk/pseudonyms.html Don't have the LP's, so I can't answer that one for you Nice to hear Gerald Wilson's trumpet playing & I just can't get enough of Teddy Edwards!! Thanks for the info
  9. Any idea as to which was the earlier/original cover? Also, I think this was only recorded/released in mono
  10. This Phil Urso/Bob Burgess Quintet title appears to be a part of the Chet Baker Big Band session (Oct 18, 1956) minus Chet & others. It was released on JWC 507 (Jazz West Coast, Vol. 3). Has it had a CD release apart from the 5CD Japanese PJ box from the early 90's? It doesn't appear to have been tagged to other PJ sessions (Chet Baker CD's etc) as has been commonplace with the PJ CD reissues of the past 20 years or so.
  11. see pages 442 & 443 of Robin Kelley's recent book (casebound edition) March 26, 1976, Carnegie Hall - quintet - Paul Jeffrey (ts), Toot (dm), Larry Ridley (b) & Lonnie Hillyer (tp) according to RK his actual final concert was June 30, 1976, Carnegie Hall with his regular quartet & sharing the bill with Dizzy Gillespie
  12. Yes, I've seen the Fresh Sound Set & have just obtained the recent TOCJ CD reissues (fantastic sound quality). Blue Note/Capitol have reissued quite a bit of the Roulette material over the past 20 years on CD - I'm surprised these were not Anyway, thanks for the heads up
  13. Am I correct in thinking that the Mobley et al 2CD's Monday Night & Another Monday Night At Birdland were originally released in the late 80's/early 90's by Blue Note/Capitol. Does anyone have the CD serial #'s - need them for my ongoing (started 1994) Blue Note & affiliated database. They are not mentioned in the Lord Discography.
  14. Yes, it was reissued in the Kaleodoscope Jazz series Concert 12 mars 1952. Click on Concert Pleyel for the CD content! Thanks Brownie - now I just need to track it down
  15. I've just picked up the Sidney Bechet Kaleidoscope/Vogue (1989) CD - Salle Pleyel 31 Janvier 52. It is supposed to contain the whole concert (minus 5 unissued titles). The majority of the titles from both the Blue Note 10" LP's (7024/5) appear to be derived from this concert (two songs from 7025 come from the later March 12 concert). The March 12 date was apparently released on a double CD (660504) - can't seem to track this one down. Was it released in the same Kaliedoscope/Vogue series? Most Bechet Pleyel CD's for sale on Amazon (US/UK/France/Germany) are usually poorly detailed (re label & tracks) except for the Masters of Jazz (Italian?) release so it's difficult to know if I'm looking at the right one. I've never seen a double pleyel set advertised. Have the two concerts ever been released as a single set (2 or 3 CD's?)
  16. many thanks for the info
  17. Can anyone confirm that "No Smokes Blues" from the December 31, 1944 Continental session has an alternate take/version The Lord Discography states that the main difference between the two versions is the introduction break (clarinet by Aaron Sachs on one & trumpet by Dizzy Gillespie on the other) I have the same version (clarinet intro) on two CD's (Continental Sessions, Vol. 3 - Storyville & Interlude - Naxos). These are listed as the original 78 release 6061. The alternate take is supposed to be on the Vaughan Remington EP 35 (anyone out there with a copy of this?) The Lord Discog appears to have this switched around ie the alternate take (trumpet intro) as the 78 release (6061) & the original take on the EP (clarinet intro) Do these different versions actually exist?? The 3CD Continental Sessions set (Storyville) makes no mention of this
  18. What a coincidence - I'm currently reading Kelley's Monk text Margarita Orelia Benskina was Panamanian born & an Afro Cuban dancer in the 40's. She was Rouse's & The Jazz Modes manager but also a practitioner of West African divination & owned/operated a "Botanica". In her later years she had a career as a poet, scholar, socialite & Harlem celebrity. She passed away in 2002.
  19. Are you referring to the JSP 4CD set (924) : DE, Vol. 1 1926-29 - Mrs Clinkscales To The Cotton Club (2005 release) ? - There is no mention on the box or CD's as to who was responsible for the remastering. JSP usually advertise on their merchandise especially if Davies or Kendall were involved. There is also a second 4CD set that is just a compilation of later material.
  20. The original 1988 US release (CDP 7-46854-2) has 15 titles The 2007 Japanese TOCJ release I have (6388) has only 10 titles - same as the original LP (WP 1285) I think the earlier TOCJ releases from the early 2000's followed the original US release with the extra titles
  21. Received my set today (way down in Australia) Very happy with the sound, though I am listening to converted MP3 files on my Mac (Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks & jellyfish woofer) Those middle discs in boxes 1 & 2 are a trifle tight!! This set will certainly achieve "Classic" status
  22. Yes, they will break - snapped a disc from the Ellington sidemen box a couple of years ago (luckily Mosaic replaced it) Appears to be a problem in quite a few of the sets
