Thanks for the above info I had seen both of those CD's on Amazon but when I compared the tracks from either CD, many didn't correspond to the Mobley session titles

Has any of Hank's material with the Paul Gayten Orchestra made it to CD? Discographies state that this was recorded in New York - I thought most of Gayten's Regal material was recorded in New Orleans

Just received this email from the Dolphy newsgroup (Alan Saul) *This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate® Pro* I got a call from Joan Weinstock, who was married to Bob of Prestige fame. She has the original oil painting by Richard "Prophet" Jennings that he used for the cover of Outward Bound, and is interested in selling it. She says it's about 15 inches square. I told her that I'd spread the word, and if anybody has real interest in purchasing it (I have no idea about price) contact me and I'll pass your contact information along to her. I see that prints of this are offered for over $100, e.g. http://www.art.com/products/p15180500-sa-i3604884/eric-dolphy-quintet-outward-bound.htm and those have the text on top of the art. She has many stories about Bob and related a couple to me. He of course sold the company in the early 70s to Fantasy, and she says he mostly played the stock market after that early retirement, with a bit of producing people like Duffy Jackson and Dr. Lonnie Smith. He didn't fly and liked to stay at home. He died penniless in January 2006. Don't give up your royalties! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Weinstock On another but slightly related topic, get ready to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 21 December. The black Vogue Digipak series from the late 90's to the mid 2000's covers all of the titles on the two OJC CD's plus an extra 15 titles from those sessions 1. The first 8 titles from Vol. 1 come from the March 7 session - there are an extra 2 titles ("The More I See You" & an alt tk of "If I Had You") -> all ten titles comprise the Vogue CD "Henri Renaud All Stars". 2. The final 5 titles from Vol. 1 come from the Duke Jordan session (Jan 28) - there an extra 6 titles ("Darn that Dream" + alt, "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Wait & See", alt of "Just One Of Those Things" & alt of "Embraceable You") -> all 11 titles on the "Duke Jordan - New York/Bud Powell - Paris" Vogue CD (more Bud Powell titles from 1963 also on this CD) 3. The First 6 titles from Vol. 2 come from the Oscar Pettiford session (March 21) - there are an extra 2 titles (alt takes of "E-Lag" & "Burt's Pad") -> all 8 titles make up the Vogue CD "Oscar Pettiford Sextet". 4. The final 5 titles from Vol. 2 come from the Renaud/Cohn quartet session (March 5) - there are an extra 5 titles ("Mountain Greenery", "The Things We Did Last Summer" + alt, alt of "Lazy Things" & rehearsal tk of NY's Idea) The Jordan & Pettiford CD's are quite easy/cheap to find whereas the two Renaud CD's go for higher prices & are a bit harder to find Finally the 4 titles from the February 28 session don't appear to have been released on a vogue digipak - they were included on the early 90's Al Cohn Vogue CD - Cohn's Delight (a bit hard to find these days) BTW I'm actually looking for a few of the Vogue digipaks Barney Wilen (Tilt); Don Byas with Mary Lou Williams; Bobby Jaspar & The Modern Jazz, Bobby Jaspar/David Amram, Henri Renaud Trio, Sextet & All Stars

Thanks for the link to the previous thread (2003 - Marcel Romano was still with us then)

I'm currently reading Robin Kelley's heartwrenching & erudite work on Thelonious. I was intrigued to see that he wrote & recorded (over 3 nights in July 59) part of the music score for the French movie "Les Liaisons Dangereuses". The majority of the titles are reworkings of his earlier material. I Thought it was only Art Blakey that recorded for this (has been released on vinyl & CD). Has the Monk material ever had a CD release? I've not seen the movie (yet!!)

Are there any box bargains currently available?
romualdo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Ellington Storyville 8CD set "The Duke" is available through Import CD's for $49.82 appears to be OOS at present (i must have purchased the last copy last night) It contains the 2CD Fargo concert plus the 2CD non Prestige Carnegie Hall concet (44?)& many other live sessions from the 40's -
Anyone know if one can source the dates & musicians list (plus titles played) +/- recorded -> has anyone compiled this material? eg - what Newports did Monk play & how many of these were recorded? -> I could probably work this out by sourcing a number of my Monk texts The official Newport website has very scant information re old concerts (50's & 60's) Wolfgang's Vault have many previously unreleased Newport performances available as downloads (MP3's & FLACS) - I'm tempted to subscribe (costs $48/year - get $50 of downloads & 30% off each download if you're a subscriber) - any comments on the quality of the downloads?
-
I also recommend the 5CD JSP set - It's actually on special via Amazon at present ($14.99) but it appears to be OOS. It's very comprehensive & the sound is impressive, covering up to 1954 (Capitol, RCA & live material that was on the Xanadu label; even includes some of his "Boots Brown" material) - no Atlantic recordings (hopefully that will be on Vol. 2 or get them on the Collectables releases) The one review in Amazon gives it an average rating due to poor sound quality - sorry, but beg to differ Another good early compilation (up to 1953) is the UK Giant Steps 2CD - The Sweetheart Of Sigmund Freud While we're on the subject of Shorty Rogers, does anyone know if the UK Clickin' With Clax LP (unreleased Atlantic material) has ever had a CD release apart from the 80's Mosaic box? Have been looking for that material for a while (but I'm not prepared to pay the big $$'s for a Mosaic Box - have placed bids for this in the past but always missed out)
-
I'd recommend the Hawkins box - has been remastered by Ted Kendall I also have the 10CD hawkins Membran box which is very likely a rip from the Classics CD's - the sound is superior in the JSP set (when comparing overlapping tracks from both sets) The Shorty Rogers set is very comprehensive & sonically excellent Looking forward to the second instalments for both of these sets
-
Just picked up the new Freddie Gambrell Fresh Sound CD - contains both of his Pacific Jazz LP's (excludes the two 45 only sides & the single JWC 513 title) Sound quality is excellent (sounds more like Japanese? CD rips than needle drops). Some of his original compositions have a "Herbie Nichols" feel to them.
-
It's a pity Keys West wasn't included in the Kenton Presents Mosaic set. Available on the Fresh Sound label
-
Looks like this will be rip/needle drop from another pirate? 4LP set (BAT 5/8) called "The Complete Birdland Sessions" plus extra titles hopefully - it was supposed to have been released as a 200 ltd edn set (Lord Discography)
-
There are a few on the list that take my fancy Vi Redd (Bird Call), Monday night At Birdland 1 & 2, Blakey's Cu-Bop & Golden Boy, Byrd/Gryce Jazz Lab (Jubilee), Hawkins The Gilded Hawk (Capitol), Les McCann In NY & Sings (PJ) Yes, some of these were released years ago, are deleted & go for higher prices on Amazon or have also been reissued by the Andorrans but I would prefer to get 24bit remasterings than "needle drops", especially with the way the Australian dollar is at present - hovering at parity with the $US & holding its own with the Yen Have the UA Vi Redd Bird Call sessions ever had a digital release except for a few titles included on the Mighty Quinn Roy Ayers CD?

Article on Mosaic from the Stamford Advocate
romualdo replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
There's also the excellent 1992 3CD set (Complete Armstrong with FH 1924-25) by Canadian Forte Records Again, the transfers were done by John RT Davies This covers a multitude of labels (including Columbia but no Victor - that was later in the decade) looking through FH's discography, Chuck's idea makes sense ie Columbia & Victor material -
Thanks, will do

Bill Dixon died on June 16 this year; see this thread (scroll down). Wikipedia Hans, thanks for the link I was aware that he had passed away earlier this year
-
Is this 6CD + prints set still available I thought you could obtain it directly from Bill Dixon's website but that appears to have shut down? - only a facebook site comes up on searches There's also mention that an new BD website is forthcoming any info would be appreciated
-
similarly for Australia - ordered my Dixon set this way (Grooves-Inc don't have the Dixon & Russell sets on their database)
-
Why? - has there been some previous discussion on this topic What do you & Chuck know?
-
just preordered my set - have been waiting for this one for a while now for the next big box - Count Basie's Columbia recordings

Anyone experienced in buying from blowitoutofhere?
romualdo replied to Bol's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'd agree with everyone re Blowitoutahere - prompt & efficient service -> the only downside is international customers can't buy directly from their website similarly good dealings (Amazon & directly via their websites) with Moviemars, import CD's (does anyone know why they will not ship OJC/Concord CD's out of the states - they have the best prices on these), Newbury Comics though shipping time from Newbury can be quite long to Australia (parcels appear to come via New Zealand) My favourite online dealer at present is GROOVES-INC (Swiss based - no international shipping charges) - best place to get the recent Soul Note/Black Saint box sets (except for the Dixon & Russell's) & other euro/UK labels. Their OJC's/Concords (euro pressings) are also much cheaper than the states. Another Amazon site I'd like to mention is the Classical Music superstore -> great place to get the Naxos Jazz icons DVD box sets (excellent after sales service - recently got the 1st box set as a birthday present & the Monk disc was faulty -> after a single email & new replacement disc was promptly shipped out) Can anyone clarify the difference between a standard CD & a promo/cutout - is there actually any difference in sound quality between the Cd's?
