Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set
romualdo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry, my bad re wrong CD - indeed it is Mingus Moves My two versions of the Call from the box set & the individual CD sound slightly different with the flute continuing to almost the end of the track on the box set CD version whereas on the individual CD version the flute is much less audible & cuts off well before the end of the track (maybe the remix improved the volume of the flute in the mix? & these are the same tracks??) Also, the Lord Discography supports this M8394] Add Sy Johnson (arr-1) added New York, October 30 & 31, 1973 28319 Opus 4 Atl SD1653, (G)R2-71454 [CD] 28320 Moves (hg,dh vcl) - - 28321 Wee (1) - - 28322 Flowers for a lady - - 28323 Newcomer - - 28324 Opus 3 - - 28325 The call (take 1) Atl (G)R1-695177 28325 The call (take 2) Atl (G)R2-71454 [CD] 28326 Big Alice (take 1) (1) Atl (G)R1-695177 28326 Big Alice (take 2) (1) - 28326 Big Alice (take 3) (1) - 28326 Big Alice (take 4) (1) Atl (G)R2-71454 [CD] Note: All titles from Atlantic SD1653 also on Atlantic Quadradisc QD1653, (Eu)50040, (Jap)P8450A. Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set
romualdo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
from the box set booklet notes - In support of Georghe's comments above that the two "Wedding March" bonus CD tracks added to Cumbia.... are unlikely to be Mingus on piano but most likely Jimmy Rowles. Probably the reason these two tracks were excluded from the box set Section titles from "Three Or Four Shades Of Blues" are described by Charles Mingus in the original liner notes and are followed here by new annotations by the author. 4. Bob Neloms temp solo, Caucasian Folk Blues, Jimmy Rowles piano After Neloms' piano solo, Rowles steps into a quote from Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" and segues into a melody resembling the 18th-century folk song "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms," which became popular in 1801 with new lyrics written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. It seems Mingus meant these two pieces to represent "Caucasian Folk Blues." Regarding the takes of Big Alice & The Call, both versions on the CD box set are take #1 whereas the bonus versions on the "Three or Four Shades...." CD releases are take #4 ("Big Alice") & take #2 ("The Call"). So, if you have the CD box & the standalone CD of TOFSOTB, you are only missing two takes of "Big Alice". -
There are a multitude of "boutique" labels abounding in the "jazz" realm, some with a long history (Ogun, Emanem & Incus: all UK based initially) - the labels really took off with the advent of CDs (Evan Parker wrote about this years back) - more compact/mobile (cheaper shipping costs) products. Some of my fav "boutique" labels include No Business (Lithuania) - archives series is outstanding (Sam Rivers, Oliver Lake etc) Fundacja Sluchaj (Listen Foundation) - impressive run of Cecil Taylor releases Not Two (Poland) - lots of Vandermark plus Brit/Euro free/improv Nimbus West & Dark Tree - Tapscott galore Jazz In Britain (been a subscriber since inception) & British Progressive Jazz False Walls (UK) - impressive recent UK label Triple Point (exxy LP's ony) Okkadisk, Atavistic Corbett vs Dempsey Burning Ambulance Leo (UK) Leo Feigin's label focusing on Russian/Eastern European jazz Recommended/ReR Megacorp - Chris Cutler's label

#955 made it to Brisbane (Australia) today - impressive booklet. Havn't listened yet

compared the tracks from the RSD coltrane listing (no timings on these though) - Sides A-C coincide with the Impulse release but excludes the Andre Francis intro (1:14), unless it's been added to track #1; Sides D-H all released on the Gambit (boot) double CD which was likely sourced from BYG (J) LPs/Charly Affinity CD & Frances Concert CDs - don't think there is anything new here Tracklist (from RSD site) DAY 1 - Monday 26th July 1965 - International Jazz Festival, Juan- Les-Pins, Antibes, France SIDE A 1. Just checked my box & disc 4 has 24 tracks. Found more info re the two missing tracks at discogs https://www.discogs.com/release/12524379-Various-Bebop-In-Britain?srsltid=AfmBOor-xf4wFzLyGJcyKk6P5MKEh6KhIcMaFL68-2jq_4pyrsF7owmY baby_interphase Oct 16, 2023 Edited 2 years ago (from Discogs) I recently acquired a copy of this box set and very good it is too [although many of the tracks can be found elsewhere on other compilations] - However, I noticed while listing to Disc 4 'In All Directions' that although 24 tracks are listed here on Discogs and also on the packaging of the release, there are actually only 22 tracks on the CD itself. After some detective work, I found that 'Knock Yourself Out' by the Norman Burns Quintet & 'A Lesson in Bop' by Tito Burns and his Sextet' are completely missing. Fortunately they can both be found on 'Soho Bop' 2CD compilation [discogs.com/release/10272896], the entire contents of which, minus the two aforementioned tracks, appears on this box set.

Yes, same as what I have but the 6 LPs are enclosed in a box https://www.discogs.com/release/8058778-Charlie-Parker-The-Stupendous-Charlie-Parker-Dial-Masters-Vol1

that finally made it to CD in 2017 (part of the Japanese Mainstream/Solid reissue series)
-
Same here or it may possibly have been the CP Dial LP box - both purchased sometime in the 80s - still have both

resurrecting an old thread (it's not really an new release anymore) Has anyone compared the SQ of the DVD with the double CD set Trying to decide whether to go for the bonus visuals (DVD) or audio only (CD)
-
237 (from my database) - some have been replaced with Japanese SHM reissues & Mosaic boxes (Clark, Henderson, Hubbard, Hutcherson, Parlan) OOPs my bad - I misread, thinking you meant standard RVG's

Disappointing release for me - the 62 concert actually had 7 tracks, but only three of these have been released on this set 1. I want to Talk About You (08:30) 2. Every time We Say Goodbye (05:20) - this track previously unreleased - listed in The Coltrane Reference 3. Bye Bye Blackbird (20:25) They could have loaded much more music onto the double CD version, probably most of the tracks below John Coltrane Quartet : John Coltrane (ts,sop) McCoy Tyner (p) Jimmy Garrison (b) Elvin Jones (d) Concert, "Kulttuuritalo", Helsinki, Finland, November 20, 1962 Bye bye blackbird Le Chant Du Monde (F)5742752.61 [CD] The inch worm - Ev'ry time we say goodbye - Mr. P.C. - Traneing in - My favorite things - [C7522]Add

This video collects the unreleased songs from the session that became Jazz By Sun Ra Volume 1, released by Transition Records in 1957. A second volume was also recorded, but Transition closed before it could be released. It later came out as the album Sound of Joy on Delmark. Recently, Sam Records reissued Vol 1 and 2 together for the first time, which is why I chose the name Volume 3 for this collection. It is not officially known by this name and I don't think it has ever been officially released in full (maybe one or two songs have appeared on a compilation though). For more information on this session, read From Sonny Blount to Sun Ra: The Chicago Years by Robert L. Campbell, Christopher Trent, and Robert Pruter.

here it is - two or three? tracks from this acetate have been released on the recent Cosmic Myth Sun Ra Arkestra "Super-Sonic Jazz" double CD

Many thanks, 15 years on!!

Attempted to order from Forced Exposure but shipping charges to Australia were obscene (more than the cost of the box set) Hopefully Dusty Groove will receive more copies - their shipping charges to down here are much more reasonable

Been printing onto my CDrs (see example) for years now - using Canon MG printers, especially the 6250 that has a CD printing capability - gone through 3 of them over the years I've been trading CDrs with Dan S (who started this thread) for years now - he's got a few of these printed CDrs I've sent him
-
I recently reproduced my faulty Dorham "Blue Bossa In The Bronx" (tracks 6 & 7), creating a CDr that played normally

hanks for the link BTW, I'm currently reading the 33 1/3/Bloomsbury book on Television's "Marquee Moon" - covers the early US punk scene transitioning from the glam scene (New York Dolls etc), particularly the CBGB's years. Lots of Patti S included.

RIP Steve - you were an indispensable contributor to the magnificent "Stax" sound but my fondest memories were your (& the M.G.s) appearances on The Blues Brothers movie back in the 80s. He played here (Australia) at the Blues & Roots Festival (Byron Bay) in 2018

I've had that Bleu Regard CD plus the two Live At Sweet Basil's (also Bleu Regards) for a number of years now
