  1. You are absolutely correct - we don't really know what's on the tapes listed by jazzdisco.org. I typed a bit too fast, and made it sound like a trust them a lot more than I really do. I mostly ignore the info from this site if it relates to grey-market material. Bertrand.
  2. The other tracks on Bird Feathers were added to the albums they belonged to when these came out on CD, but the title tune was NOT added to Alto Madness. Bertrand.
  3. P.S. Did you ever find out anything about 'River Jordan'? (Perhaps someone can dig up the thread from the old BNBB). Bertrand.
  4. I like what Jim said. I too have my interest piqued. Tom, my main concern was that I have been in touch with several people who have been doing extensive research on Lee Morgan over the last 10-15 years, and from what I can tell you have not been in touch with them. But, as I have been reading more, I see that you have dug up some things no one else has (e.g. details on the fate of Helen More). I am sorry that we were not in touch before (I first heard about your book when it was already written). I have posted this before on this board and the former Blue Note board that I stumbled across a large number (60-70) of compositions that Lee sent in for copyright deposit that he never recorded. Trumpeter David Weiss went through the lead sheets for these. Although there were many that were alternate titles for previously known compositions, there are still a number of 'new' pieces. Three of them ('Queen Joesphine', 'Anguish' and 'Festival Of The Grapes') were performed by a D.C.-based group almost 10 years ago. I have mentioned this to the biographers I know. I think this could be an interesting topic for research, namely what prompted him (other than the obvious financial motive - he probably got paid some money for each of these tunes) to copyright these pieces, yet never record them. A big question mark was whether or not he played them live. I only recently got some information that he did, although I do not have too many details yet, as I got this from one of the musicians in his later bands but through a middle-man (I have yet to speak to this musician, who never comes through D.C.). Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading your book. I'm sorry this information couldn't get to you in time. Bertrand.
  5. I didn't know about the private tapes, but I assume that someone has heard these and that the listing of 'Giant Steps' is correct. As for the jam sessions with Wayne Shorter, I believe these are from Wayne's own accounts. I know he mentioned playing this tune during their practice sessions, and possibly remembered playing it live as well. But no tapes likely exist from these gigs, so we will never know for sure. In the interview with Mel Martin at: http://www.melmartin.com/html_pages/Interviews/shorter.html Wayne does mention the possbility of the existence of some bootleg tapes from a jam session with the Roach and Rollins (see below). Have these ever surfaced? That name Pete Lonesome shows up somewhere else, perhaps in Michelle Mercer's book. I will investigate further. Perhaps Lonesome also taped Wayne with Coltrane (not likely). Bertrand. 'The Mark VII I have is good. It has another kind of sound, heavy kind of sound. The first horn I ever played was a Martin. I remember playing that horn on a stage with Sonny Rollins in Newark, New Jersey at a place called Sugar Hill. I was in the Army and I had a weekend off. This was when Max Roach and Sonny Rollins were playing together, right after when Clifford Brown died. I walked into the club in uniform and Max waved to me to come on up, but I went home and changed clothes first (laughter). We played Cherokee real fast. A guy named Pete Lonesome recorded that. What a name! He was from West Virginia and as far as I know he still has that recording somewhere. Pete, please contact this magazine. He put the mic right on the stage. Pete Lonesome.'
  6. I was just digging Clarence Sharpe on Freddie Redd's Lonely City. He's also on Lee Morgan's first BN date. What else is he on where he is featured prominently enough? Bertrand.
  7. I had a thread aout this 2-3 years ago (or was it on the BNBB), but I ran into: 1) James Williams walking in Dupont Circle in D.C. 2) Ron Carter at the D.C. Zoo 3) Joe Chambers at Borders' in D.C. Bertrand.
  8. 'Well, I don't consider it trivia when it's published that "Morgan, for all his civil rights sensibilities, still had a process - chemically straightened hair - at a time when Afros were de rigueur." This misrepresentation implies that Morgan was conflicted about his racial identity, which is absolutely false.' I see your point and I would tend to agree with you that the author is taking great liberties in jumping to this conclusion. We already knew from the 'socio-cultural' slant of the table of contents (and the subtitle) where this book is coming from. Don't expect any musical analysis. I hope at least that he is a good writer. Bertrand.
  9. Hey Steve, Can you ask Nathan if he has any idea of the whereabouts of the tapes that he says that he recorded for Pather Marconi with Larry Young and Woody Shaw? This was in an interview on the web a few years back (probably All About Jazz). Thanks, Bertrand. Here it is: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=16789
  10. So does JSB get any royalties??? Bertrand.
  11. I wouldn't use this as drink coasters. Bertrand.
  12. I think we had pretty much figured out that they were deep-sixing the 20-bit series, which is a shame. RVG seems to be the route now. Has he discovered the Fountain Of Youth? Seeing his age (late seventies, I believe), it hardly seems like a long-term plan. Not to be too morbid or anything Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Joe Henderson is the first time Concord has put out a CD from the Fantasy vault that was not already available as a single CD in one series or another. Bertrand.
  13. This will mark the first time Power To The People has appeared on a stand-alone CD in the U.S. This is welcome news. I passed on the box due to my usual wariness of box sets, and got the individual titles I wanted most. This one has been highly praised here, so I'm really looking forward to it. Bertrand.
  14. How about: 'John Coltrane - Fearful Sideman'! Bertrand.
  15. Is there actually a track with Monk and Mobley together? How is the sound quality on this thing? Thanks, Bertrand.

    RVGs

That's about 160 CDs. At $12 a CD, you would pay about $1,920 if purchased individually, no coupons etc. Who would want this? Is there anyone interested in this music who doesn't have at least some of these? And it's hardly a stocking stuffer. Two questions: 1) Wasn't the Turrentine/3 Sounds a Connoisseur? 2) When did Chopin record for BN? Bertrand.
  17. So the Mosaic set contained music from the the following LPs: Airgein Gooden's Corner Oleo Born To Be Blue as well as three isolated tracks: Count Every Star Grenada Hey There 'Count Every Star' is on two CDs: Blue And Sentimental and Born To Be Blue (it was originally on one of the LPs, and a bonus track on the other CD). The other two tracks are bonus cuts on The Latin Bit CD. So, to get the Mosaic set, you need the 2-CD set (which contains Airegin, Gooden's Corner and Oleo), the Born To Be Blue CD and The Latin Bit CD. If you want the COMPLETE Green/Clark sessions, you need to get the First Session CD which contains two tracks that were not on the Mosaic set. I just checked jazzdisco.org: 'Count Every Star' is actually from the Gooden's Corner session, so shouldn't it be on the 2-CD set? Or is it left out because of the tenor? The only other Green/Clark session is Don Wilkerson's Elder Don. This would have made the Mosaic set a bit longer... Bertrand.
  18. Is Llew Matthews based in LA? He did a record in October '97 with Jackie Mac on a couple of tunes - this turned out to be Jackie's next-to-last date. I wish I could get a hold of this, but the only copies I've seen on-line are pricey Japanese imports. Bertrand.
  19. Thanks for the tip - I can't make the pre-concert anyway. I'll be at the show at 7:30. I don't have my seat number - my friend has the tickets. Where are you? Bertrand.
  20. Bon Anniversaire, Guy! Bertrand.
  21. Patrick, I'll be at the pre-show discussion as well. I plan to ask McCoy about his experience playing with Cal Massey, so you'll know who I am. I look just like my avatar Shadowhillway will also be there. Bertrand.
  22. I'm gonna see 'em Sunday at the University of Maryland. Bertrand.
  23. Happy Birthday, Daniel! Bertrand.
  24. Remember to reverse the polarity when playing your RVGs. Bertrand.
  25. Wait...there's another organist who wears a turban??? Bertrand.
