  1. Actually, I'm really trying to solve a discographical conundrum. Hearing the actual thing can wait I think a Dewey discography is needed at jazzdiscography.com Bertrand.
  2. Yeah, the oboe thing sounded just plain wrong. Do you mean he played musette on this date, or in general? Bertrand.
  3. BTW, you can't trust Columbia's personnel listings. The recent reissue of Monk. does not mention that the tune 'Teo' is from a different session with Butch Warren on bass. You have to search the web to find this out. So Dewey could appear uncredited on Skies Of America. Bertrand.
  4. I had thought until two days ago that Ornette was the only soloist on this but then the following occurred: 1) I was listening to an interview Phil Schapp did with Dewey back in 1990 and PS mentions Dewey's 'lenghty' tenor solo on this record (which he first calls American Skies until Dewey corrects him). I was puzzled about this, so I checked at jazzdisco.org 2) They have Dewey playing tenor and oboe on this (along with Haden and Blackwell). So, keeping in mind the two following facts: 1) Schapp often is clueless about what he claims to be an expert on 2) Jazzdisco.org is often totally wrong I thought the only way to pin this down is to talk to someone who has this. They have it at yourmusic, but I was only thinking of getting it if someone could confirm that Dewey is audible on this. It looks like Brownie is saying he isn't - perhaps Dewey is present but buried in the mix (like Wayne on 'Falling Water'), or perhaps Dewey is not there at all. Otherwise, I was leaning towards not getting this. Now if Rooster has an extra copy, that's a whole 'nother story! Thanks, Bertrand.
  5. How prominent is Dewey on this record? Does he get any solo space? Bertrand.
  6. In the new issue, a reader also writes to complain about the JOS piece. Great article of Lee Morgan - now I know the name of the woman he was cheating on his girlfriend with when he was killed. Bertrand.
  7. Corrected my post above to make more sense. Bertrand.
  8. And the song 'Heavy Dipper' may have originally been intended for Blue Train. I wonder if any further research has been done on this. Bertrand.
  9. I think Quentin passed away a while ago. He was a bus driver, although he may have still been playing. Here's a GREAT article (despite the Dexter Gordon goof): http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=22403 Love the quote: “you’re not always in the mood for Monk. Sometimes you just want a Kenny Dorham tune.” Bertrand.
  10. Indeed, I just recently found out that Quentin was Butch's uncle! Bertrand.
  11. That Brain Salad site is full of it - it's much more than a 'quote'. Bertrand.
  12. From the hospital described in this article: http://thebadplus.typepad.com/dothemath/20...tch_warren.html Bertrand.
  13. Things are looking up for Butch - he will be out soon. I'll keep you posted as more details become available. Bertrand.
  14. The Iridium has Joey DeFrancesco with Booby Hutcherson - not too shabby. Anything else? Bertrand.
  15. That's the dumbest dress I've ever seen. Bertrand.
  16. I've seen Oliver Lake a few times playing mostly Dolphy material - it was fabulous. I've heard very little WSQ. I've seen Murray and Bluiett a few times; I thought Lake was the best. Bertrand.
  17. What's your friend's name? I'll keep an eye out for him. Bertrand.
  18. Thanks guys. So I will definitely get it from yourmusic, since 5 of the tracks are not available elsewhere. Later in life, I might get the other stuff.... Bertrand.
  19. Ed, Of course, you had a portable tape recorded with you that day, right? Bertrand.
  20. During the WKCR Dewey Redman tribute back in September, Ben Young said that apparently Dewey Redman and Larry Young had a gig together at Slugs' in 1968 (with Rashied Ali). Discuss.... Bertrand.
  21. I plan to get the single CD of this from yourmusic, which I assume matches the vinyl. I know there was a 2-CD set from this same gig. Stefan has told me that the tracks on the 2-CD set are from a different show than the single CD. So are the tracks from the single CD all from one show? Is there any overlap between the single CD and the 2-CD set? Thanks, Bertrand.
  22. Robert Altman was my favorite film director, and McCabe And Mrs. Miller is my favorite film of all time. He was truly a genius. After Jackie, Dewey and now Altman, 2006 has been a REALLY bad year. I will never forget how much their artistry enriched my life. Bertrand.
  23. I can't keep up - you guys must have found a secret to stretch the days to 48 hours! All right - so how much Hendrix with Larry Young has actually been issued? I know the track from Nine To The Universe was on LP - has it ever been on CD? I also know the track on the 4-CD box was NOT Larry Young. Is there anything else out there on Dagger records or elsewhere? Thanks, Bertrand.
  24. If Quincy Troupe is involved, I expect the film to just be culled together from snippets of other jazz films. Bertrand.
  25. I'm looking forward to reading this book to see what I can learn. Bertrand.
