I guess I meant 'contract' rather than 'date'. Bertrand.

I saw this on Netflix, but the also have it as unavailable. When is it scheduled for release? Bertrand.
-
He still needs a record date. I wish someone had recorded the Iridium gig I saw on April 8th, especially since John Hicks passed away a month later. BTW, I was supposed to get some interview together for his website. I even had a thread going here for questions. I need to dig that up and revive this project. Bertrand.

Grachan Moncur III - Exploration. Bertrand.

Another stupidity - the Montery box used to be available on iTunes (I bought Joe Henderson's 'Isotope' last year) but it is not anymore Bertrand.

Well that sucks. Each CD is only 45 minutes long and the first only has about 35 minutes of actual music. These two tracks from Monterey (and any others if they were taped - the whole thing was only 35-40 minutes, so there were only one or two more tracks) could have been included as bonus tracks and could have served as a nice historical contrast, since UCLA was a 'correction' of the Monterey gig. In fact, one tracks was on the 7'' 33, so the CD has LESS material than the LP. Another example of Sue Mingus dropping the ball. A number of people could have helped her put together a more historically significant reissue - why didn't Fred Cohen chime in? Bertrand.
-
The new 2-CD set Sue Mingus put out does not seem to include the bonus 45 that was in the LP (or at least the LP Sue and Fred Cohen put out some 20 years ago). What was on this 45? Am I missing something? Thanks, Bertrand.

There is much more to this story, but I only have sketchy details right now. From www.larryyoungmusic.com: 'After Larry returned from California, he suddenly passed away under mysterious circumstances which are being investigated presently by the authorities. Like Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin and other artist of that period who passed away under mysterious circumstances appears that now you can add Larry Young to that category. Larry Young died a needless death at the age of 37. Larry Young was a wise, kind and loving man whose imposing stature was betrayed by his deep gentleness and respect to people who was close to him. He was very versatile, inventive and a pioneering musician who left the planet with a lot of unfinished musical business. We miss the man and the music he made very much. ' Bertrand.

And I had heard Leukemia. A.B. Spellman needs to write a new book: 'Four Deaths in the Be-Bop business'. He could cover some of the more colorful demises (Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark). Bertrand.

Jazz For Children 1
bertrand replied to garthsj's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Just don't ever get a kid the Wynton Marsalis 'jazz for kids' book, or whatever he calls it, unless you want the kid to grow up with a totally warped sense of life. I perused this at a bookstore after I became aware of its existence. It's unbelievable the dreck that creep is trying to peddle to young minds. This book was the final vindication (as if I needed any) that WM is a total fraud. Bertrand. -
Organissimo at New Haven Lounge, Baltimore
bertrand replied to Stefan Wood's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I just got up!!! Good to see you got home safely. That was a fabulous gig. I think the Haven lounge was a perfect venue for the band. As Stefan said, from the outside the place is scary, but once you get in, you see how warm and convivial it is. The tenor sax was my friend Whit Williams, a longtime player on the Baltimore/DC scene and a super great guy. Bertrand. -
I can't blame BB if he does walk away after the Cellar Door fiasco. Bertrand.

PR: Keith Jarrett "The Carnegie Hall Concert"
bertrand replied to cinemediapromo's topic in New Releases
I'm open to PR announcements as long as they clear it with Jim first (as this person did). Of course, it's more work for him Bertrand. -
The Reptet gig at Twins was awesome - what a great band! I really enjoed the Marx Brothers suite, although I feel Gummo got shortchanged. 'H.R.' is a beautiful piece - I listened to most of the CD last night. I had to leave mid-way through the third set. They were singing about their dicks, so maybe it was good time to go Bertrand.

Holy crap - that picture of Dan Morgenstern with a beard is hilarious! Bertrand.

I don't plan to pay anywhere near $30 for this. Bertrand. -
Lee Morgan Bio and others

Amazing. After years of hearsay, we finally have a date of death for Helen More. She was 48 in 1972 if I remember the obits correctly, so she was roughly 72 when she died. Larry, any info (and eventually a copy of the interview!) would be greatly appreciated. I'm in touch with several Lee Morgan biographers. Thanks, Bertrand. -
I'm on my way over. Don't have a camera though Bertrand.

I agree with the above posts - going to Tower used to be an amazing experience that the internet could not duplicate. However, that was years ago, back when they would have tons of TOCJ and you could buy them at reasonable prices during the clearance sale. Just called the Rockville, MD, Tower - what they know so far is that the smaller, less profitable stores are closing. The sale starting today is 30% off on CDs (and DVDs I guess), so it's like a clearnace sale. When the Tower in Annapolis closed, it was everything half-price. By the time I got there, they were cleaned out. Bertrand.
-
Yeah, I read that too - it might still go the other way. The website is mum, of course. Prices were definitely an issue. When they had good sales it was OK, but that went away. As I posted elsewhere, if you tweak the Borders' coupons, you can get pretty decent prices. I've managed to get some $11.99 CDs for only $6 and change. Bertrand.

Are they saying a going out of business sale starts TOMORROW? I don't want to sound like a vulture - I'm sorry this is happening. On the other hand, it's not my fault. God knows I spent enough money there Bertrand.

Was this actually broadcast Bertrand.

What a fabulous gig! The band is really amazing. I was very glad to know that the people at Twins' really dug it as well. It was great meeting everyone in the flesh, so to speak. The other twin is Maze (pronounced Ma-zee). I cannot wait for Baltimore next week - just about the same distance from my house as Twins'. I gotta run for now, but I'll post the set list later. I plan to be at the reptet gig on Tuesday, if only to witness the meeting of weizy and Johnny E.!!! Bertrand. -
