  1. Kevin, I know about the pressing problems with Basra (fortunately my copy is OK). What were the problems with Lee Way and All-Seeing Eye? I doubt there were only two pressings of Schizophrenia and Etcetera. Those have been around since 1995, and I'm sure they sell pretty well. Bertrand.
  2. Whatever became of Leon Henderson? Bertrand.
  3. Andrew was a judge at this week-end's Thelonious Monk piano competition. It was good to see him again, and he seemed really happy to be part of this event. Bertrand.

    Dewey Left Town!

Beautiful. I had a few chats with Dewey along the years. He was an amazing spirit. I will never forget him. I met Joshua this week-end and gave him my condolences. Bertrand.
  5. Bill is indeed amazing. Although he lives right here in the D.C. area, he rarely has organ gigs. Piano/electric piano gigs are much more frequent. Only person I've ever met who's been on Oprah. Well, maybe not anymore, I met Phylicia Rashad last night. Bertrand.

    New Ipods

Concerning the software update, I have a question which may be the same as Chalupa's. My 40-gig crashed a few months ago. The Apple Store thought it sounded like the hard drive was bad, but it might be related (although unlikely) to the fact that I had not loaded the latest software (I always click no when asked - I'm very resistant to upgrades). The woman said I needed to update it both on the iPod itself and on my computer. She did the iPod for me (wiping it out in the process), and I was supposed to go home and do it on the computer. Otherwise, the versions of the software on my iPod and my computer were not compatible. However, I still have not gotten around to doing so. Now, there is a new version. Do I need to put this new version both on my computer and my iPod? Can I do both these things from the iTunes site? Where exactly do I find it? My plan is to: 1) Download the new software onto my computer 2) Update the software on my iPod if necessary 3) Load the iTunes library into my iPod If I still experience playback problems, then I'll get an 80 gig (with extended warranty). I was mad at Apple all summer because my 40-gig only lasted about 20 months, but now I just miss having one too much. With 80 gigs, I can put most of my CDs on there! My experience is to get the extended warranty. If I had had it on my 40-gig, I could have gotten a new one in May. Note that you cannot get a warranty beyond two years. This means they know there is a good chance iPods will die after two years - not much of life expectancy for something that price. So, in summary: Where do I get the software I need to update my computer and (eventually) the iPod itself? Thanks, Bertrand.
  7. I plan to give him the benefit of the doubt. Don't worry: even if it's bad, there will be a better one in a few years. You're still young. Bertrand.
  8. He has not talked to any of the Lee Morgan researchers I have been in touch with - they never heard of him. Bertrand.
  9. I asked Andrew about 'The Rumproller' a couple of years ago. It was not written specifically for Lee's record. Andrew and his group were rehearsing it for one of Andrew's dates, and Alfred Lion heard it and thought it would be better on a Morgan record. So which Andrew Hill date? The Rumproller is from 4/21/65 Pax is 2/10/65 Dialogue is 4/3/65 Compulsion is 10/8/65 I guess it must have been Dialogue - I'm not sure if Andrew said he was the leader or not. Bertrand.
  10. Just saw Mickey Roker in D.C. on Friday - fabulous drummer! Bertrand.
  11. Is the Weather Report a compilation? Bertrand.
  12. Reiner or Kevin, Will you pass this along to MC, or should I summarize it in a nifty Word File? This thread is getting big. Bertrand.
  13. I spoke to Jackson today, indeed a most helpful gentleman. The bad news: The Wallington is definitely gone There will probably be more of these blowout sales, possibly in a couple of months. Nothing firm but YIKES The really good news: We can send him suggestions of reissues etc. and he will forward it along. Concord really wants to keep reissuing things (I know you will ask: then why are things going OOP?). So, I will start a thread tonight or tomorrow with our wish lists, and send it to him in two weeks or so. I know what I will start with: A complete Dolphy Five-Spot 2-CD set in 24 bit The 2 Mobley CDs as two separate RVGs Any unissued tracks from the Lee Morgan Take Twelves sessions; Stuart Kremsky told me there was more tape, and I know that Lee copyrighted five extra tunes along with the four on the album. I'd also like the extra track from Larry Young's Groove Street ('Here's Bill') which Kremsky confirmed exists. Don't put your wishlist here. I'l start a separate thread (unless someone else wants to start it). Bertrand.
  14. I have no intention of bitching. I'l just sing his praises and ask him gently if he can rustle up a Wallington for me. Bertrand.
  15. This is so fucked up. Why would titles that were dropped come back? I made an order last week, and two titles were dropped since. So the following could happen: 1) I get them anyway, because I ordered last week and they have already been 'saved' for me. Doubtful, seeing how slow they are. 2) I don't get them, and they never appear again. Oh well, I'll live. 3) I don't get them, and they show up again in two weeks. I don't plan to make another order (don't even mention the possibility of a winter blow-out!), so I'll never get them. This would piss me off. I already had to do without the Milt Jackson K-2. Should I call Action Jackson and have him somehow make sure he scours up these two titles for me, or is this beyond his reach? It might be worth the call - I really want the Wallington. Bertrand.
  16. The question is still open for those who own the RVG: is there any technical problem with this edition (such as the one on the Colossus RVG)? If not, of course I will buy the RVG and use a coupon which Borders' has gone insane with (save $10 on a $20 purchase? I went hog-wild last week-end). All the other editions are hard but not impossible to find. Of course the music comes first, but I don't want to get screwed either. The Colossus debacle is a blight on Concord as well as RVG. He could have done a patch. Bertrand.
  17. For the most part, I'm OK with RVGs with some rare exceptions. I'm thinking more along the lines of the problems with the RVG Saxophone Colossus. Bertrand.
  18. I'm with Al on this - I don't have this one either. So I will ask the question somewhat differently: Of all the versions out there, is there anyone to stay AWAY from? I plan to buy the RVG unless I hear it has a problem, in which case I will get the K2 or the OJC if I can find 'em. I plan on only buying ONE version in my lifetime. Bertrand.
  19. And yet MC has also been categoric about this one! Kevin - any thoughts on the rejected McLean? Bertrand.

    Dewey Left Town!

Has anyone ever seen the 2001 Canadian Documentary Dewey Time? I wonder if I will ever be able to buy this in my lifetime. It's been four days, and I'm still in shock. Mark Masters was scheduled to record Dewey with his Orchestra at the end of the month. Now it will be Oliver Lake playing the arrangements in tribute to Dewey. Thanks, Dewey, for making this world a better place. Bertrand.
  21. I wonder how long it will take before the video of Steve Irwin's last moments shows up... Not that I will be looking. Bertrand.
  22. I suspect the Silver tapes were the only ones Michael would have given back to the artist, partially because these were not done in the RVG studio. We know the incident with the Shorter date (it's been 11 years - does he necessarily still feel that way?), but has Michael ever said anything about the rejected McLean date with Bobby Hutcherson, Tyrone Washington and Woody Shaw? I know Jackie thought the drummer (Norman Connors) ruined the date (I saw it in a Cadence interview I can no longer track down), but is it really all that bad? There are five compositions: 'Abrasion' and 'Hymn To Rap' by Jackie, 'One For Jeru' by Connors, 'In Case You Haven't Heard' by Shaw and 'Kupenda' (composer unknown). I found the composers by looking through an assignements file at LC (there are no lead sheets, however). Does anyone know anything else? Thanks, Bertrand.
  23. Frank, Thank you so much for the update. Please let Andrew know that we are all thinking of him and wish him strength in this difficult period. Bertrand.

    Dewey Left Town!

I saw the news here Saturday - I'm just still too numb to gather my thoughts. Dewey was one of my heroes. There will never be another one like him. Bertrand.
  25. Andrew is supposed to be a judge at the Monk piano competition in two weeks. Bertrand.
