I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Bertrand.

Last I heard, the master tape for Golden Boy is AWOL. Bertrand.

I know it's in the Moncur Mosaic, but I would like a single CD of Jackie McLean's Hipnosis. As for the rejected Shorter session, I know all about the anecdote concerning Wayne's opinion of this, but it was 11 years ago. People in the music biz have been known to change their minds. Bertrand.

Reiner suggested we start a wish list for 2007 Connoisseurs. Here's what we know so far: Andrew Hill: Compulsion!!! (already scheduled) - edit: it's scheduled as an RVG Louis Smith: Smithville with bonus tracks (already scheduled) My requests: Andrew Hill Change (3/7/66) Larry Young: Contrasts Larry Young: Heaven On Earth Kenny Burrell: Freedom Woody Shaw: Master Of The Art/Night Music (twofer) - originally on Elektra/Musician I'll look through the discography this week-end and add more. And, since Rooster wants to try a campaign for the trainwreck sessions, why not give it a shot - you only live once: Tyrone Washington: Trainwreck session (date?) or Natural Essence with some tracks from the Trainwreck session as bonus tracks Jackie McLean: rejected 7/5/68 Wayne Shorter: rejected 10/13/70 I don't believe MC has ever expressed an opinion about the McLean (but Jackie said he didn't like the drummer). Much has been said about the Shorter, but I think it's worth thinking about again. Bertrand.

Didn't the Collector's Choice Johnny Griffin alreay have bonus tracks? I started a list on the Compulsion thread, but I'll start a new thread. Bertrand.

Apparently there's a 30% coupon out this week, but I didn't get it. Bertrand.

I was not able to order two titles which were not on the blowout page but were listed under 'artists' with the $7.98 price (the price before the multi-CD order price kicks in). When I clicked on 'add to cart' or 'buy now', a fatal error was returned. I tested it on other titles not part of the blowout sale, and I could (temporarily) add them to my cart. So it's not a software error, it's specific to titles that are no longer available. I was able to order a bunch of K2s, only one of which is on the list above. Let's see what I wind up getting. Bertrand.

I'm fine with waiting for the announcement of the titles, but as I asked in the other thread, do we still have a way to get suggestions out to MC before he makes the final decision? Kevin? Bluerein? Thanks, Bertrand.

'Blues For Jackie' was credited to KD on the Vertigo Connoisseur. Both this tune and 'The Way I Feel' were listed as composer unknown on the TOCJ of this date. I prefer this than crediting 'The Way I Feel' to John Patton on the 2-fer. That's just silly. Bertrand.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. I want to make an order today. I made a list Monday. When I looked at the site last night (I wasn't able to order because the power went out), two titles were no longer on the sale list. But they are there if you look under 'artists' at the $7.98 sale price! Can I order it through there, and it will still be counted as one of the $2.98 titles once I get to checkout? If so, how do I know there are not other titles I might want that are part of the discount but do not show up on the sale page? Bertrand.

Didn't Ian Carr's book say that Shepp sat in with Miles and Miles promptly disappeared? I wonder what Shepp/Shorter sounded like. Bertrand. -
At least no one is collecting royalties who shouldn't be due to this typo. The guy who called him 'Herbie Handcock' is a real jack-off. Probably the same guy who did Finger Popin'. Bertrand.

Here's a monkey wrench in your theory: the dates in the BN discography are not always correct. Remember that article in Down Beat where they were asking Ron Carter about an Andrew Hill session (one of the ones in the select) and how he was also in the studio that day for another session and that he had had to rush from one studio to another? Carter said it didn't happen and Cuscuna went back and changed the Andrew Hill date by a few days. This was discussed in another thread - don't have time to search right now. My point is, the McDuff and Burrell session most likely did not both take place on 1/8/63. 'Now we know what they used as the template for the Midnight Blue booklet and tray insert'. I'm surprised McCoy didn't get composer credit for all tracks on Midnight Blue Bertrand.

Brownie brings up an interesting topic, which probably should lead to a separate thread. INA is one of many reposits in Europe of tons of jazz audio and video broadcasts which are officially owned by the government. So far, these sources have been almost impossible to crack. You would not believe some of the stuff that exists out there which almost no one has seen or heard since the original broadcast. Curiously, INA was actually the source for one of the rare exceptions, due to an error on the part of one of their staffers. About 10 years ago, there was a series of CDs that came out (I think it said INA diffusion on the back cover) by Monk, Mingus and others. Problem is, no one had secured the rights! All the CDs were pulled after a lawsuit by some of the estates, and the responsible was sacked (I believe). When I met Don Sickler briefly in his office in NYC in April, he told me excitedly about the upcoming DVDs featuring rare European TV broadcasts not seen since their only airing. He was involved in this transaction, and told me it seemed to him that the 'European vaults were starting to crack open' (I paraphrase). I hope his optimism is well-placed. So my question is this (for our European board members): Do any of you have any 'inside' access to people working at these state archives? Is there anything that can be done to further this 'cracking open'? Do different countries have a detailed list of their holdings? INA had some database and I was given a printout of their Wayne Shorter holdings (which will now be out of date but it was detailed - song titles, personnel, dates). I've been told by at least one person in 'higher circles' that I am naive in thinking we can ever get the estates to reach a cordial agreement, but the speed at which the Monk/Trane Carnegie Hall CD came out (less than a year after discovery of the tape at the Library of Congress) makes me think things may not necessarily be so hard. If INA had actually done their job and contacted the estates, are we sure a deal could not have been worked out? Food for thought... Bertrand.

Yes, but they spell it correctly. Bertrand.

I hope those extra tracks will be on the Smithville. Bertrand.

This composer credit stuff drived me up the wall. I've been busting my butt all these years (less so since my son was born), scouring the card catalog and the copyright deposits at the Library of Congress trying to straighten these things out, ESPECIALLY the Blue Note copyrights. When I find something out of direct importance to BN (e.g. that 'Trapped' is really by Wayne Shorter, or that 'Riggar Mortes' is really by Lee Morgan, or that 'The Way I Feel' is really by Butch Warren), I send it on to MC. It then gets fixed on the next reissue, but other more obvious mistakes then creep in, like attributing 'The Gigolo' to Cahn/Styne or now "Mamacita' to Donald Byrd. How the hell do these things happen? How do they straighten it out in terms of dispensing the royalties? I have a nagging feeling that all royalties related to the title track of The Gigolo on the new RVG will go to Cahn/Styne, and not the Lee Morgan estate. This is not just a matter of typos - there's money involved. Bertrand.

Any chance there's still any unreleased Reid Miles covers???

If I remember correctly, Back To The Tracks went as far as getting test pressings. I wonder if any of those survived. Bet they would fetch a fortune on ebay! Bertrand. -
I'm fine with Change as a title, but I was not aware this was the originally intented title. Bertrand. Edit: I see the title Change is from the Mosaic box booklet, which I don't have.

Let's give a title to the 3/7/66 Andrew Hill date. Calling it the Involution session drives me almost as nuts as when the Booker Ervin session with Woody Shaw was being referred to as Back From The Gig. I propose either Hope or Desire. Bertrand.
-
Kyo, I recommend you get the Hill select ASAP - you won't regret it. Some of my favorite Andrew music is on there. Bertrand.

Bluerein. Since you are 'in the loop' concerning upcoming releases, would you be willing to forward our wish lists to MC? Mine would include the remaining Andrew Hill BN date originally with Sam Rivers (3/7/66), the two last Larry Young sessions (Contrasts and Heaven On Earth), the aforementioned Louis Smith, Kenny Burrell's Freedom, and I'm sure I could come up with more. I'm very happy to hear about Compulsion!!! We could start a separate thread, whatever is easiest for you. It's worked before (see the 1999 series of unissued dates including Hutcherson's The Kicker and Drums Around The Corner - these came from BN board requests). Thanks, Bertrand.

I only got 25% off in the mail - found the $5 off right here! Bertrand.

As an example, I saw the September 1986 Paris concert by Miles (later broadcast on TV). They mostly played the songs from Tutu (which had just come out). The performances were a million times better than what was on the album. We Want Miles is probably my favorite 80's Miles album, especially the second album. I wish he had done more tunes like 'My Man's Gone Now' - revisiting tracks form the old days with a modern flavor. Shirley Horn dug the arrangement so much she used it on her Miles Tribute album. 'Ursula' from Man With The Horn is fantastic as well. Bertrand.
