This is good news. Y'see, around here in cultural-wasteland-hell, "Edgefest" refers to an all-day concert put on by radio station 102.1 "The Edge," which mainly plays crap like Nickelback and other nu-Metallica-bands who are mad as hell at their dads. There are usually about 421 bands, they get up on stage, scream their song, and leave. Nobody can tell them apart, and nobody is sober enough to care. How I wish DFW had the same kind of artistic venture that you guys have.

Box sets where the first disc is the best
Big Al replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Bobby Hutcherson Select, but that's only because I'm enjoying disc one so much I haven't yet made it to the other two! -
As long as I live, nothing will ever make me run screaming from the room like hearing Kelly Clarkson sing "Sgt. Pepper." Nothing against Ms. Clarkson, for whom I actually have a lot of respect. But what a horrid choice of tunes and an utterly incongruous arrangement.

I recently saw a whole bunch of those at the local Half-Price Books. Got a pretty giggle out of seeing them. Well, I'm bringing the thread back up because I'm gettin' ready to sell a whole bunch of these records that used to belong to my Gramma, including all the Sing Along With Mitch records. My mother-in-law asked if I could make a whole bunch of these LPs into CD. (I gotta say right now, my Gramma took great care of her records. Some of these are in fantastic condition!) So, tonight, while doing other things on the computer, I'm saving MORE SING ALONG WITH MITCH. My opinion hasn't changed. This stuff is coma-inducing. I've heard funeral dirges with more rhythm. I'd like to think that those who grew up in houses with a piano, their parents played something a little more high-spirited. I've tried to figure out why this stuff was so popular; maybe it was a soothing alternative to that "devil-music rock & roll." But at least my computer survived 'em all. Maybe my computer figured the Mitch records couldn't be nearly as bad as that Loggins & Messina live record I played thru it!

You just saved me the embarrassment of starting a thread called "How come my Boooby Hutcherson and Tony Williams Selects aren't numbered?" If I were you, I'd send them back to Mosaic and INSIST that they be numbered. Or you could number them "0001" on your own and sell them on ebay. Don't let my 11-year-old Blue-Note-hating son see this; he'd do it in a heartbeat!

Duke Ellington: 1936-40 Small Group Sessions

Thank you! Thank you! You're too kind! -
In total agreement. That "In Concert" album is killer as well. Which one? Seems like there are a lot of CTI "In Concert" albums on which Freddie appears. This one. Turrentine is friggin' ON during this concert, he stretches out much farther than you'd expect. Wow! I hope I can find both volumes! The lineups look smokin'!

There must be something in the format of boards like this that brings out the obsessive-compulsive nature of people who simply can't live in a world where, God Forbid!, a question might be asked a second time. We must have order! You WILL use the Search function to find any possible previously existing thread that addresses any thought or question you might have! We cannot have duplicate threads, EVER! If this board were the only one where this sort of Order! and Discipline! were demanded of its posting members, that would be one thing. However, I see this behavior repeated in board after board in all manner of subjects. Right! Stop that! This is SILLY! Carry on, Sergeant Major! (BTW, you do know who started that "other" thread, right?) -

Homemade covers for LP's that MIGHT've been on BN
Big Al replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
yuck! just imagine Barry Harris on electric piano, that sweetish CTI mix all over, Cranshaw replaced by Ron Carter at his boomiest/slidiest and Cobham laying down a dry beat instead of smilin' Billie! (But then you'd have to replace Mogie with Hubbard, too, i guess...) yuck yuck yuck! OMG!!! I would be all OVER this album if it were a reality (ie if "Sidewinder" had been CTI'd!). Call me !!! There are so many great covers in this thread! Especially that Barney "Sonny" Wilen cover. Hilarious!!! -

Today must be a banner day for starting repeater threads. Especially that clown who started yet another "Mosaic Select Running Low" thread. Probably a Styx fan or something. -
Eh, just curious is all; this is my first Select purchase, so what do I know? (I also received the Tony Williams and Bobby Hutcherson sets as well, but the numbers aren't printed on the outside like the Moncur's was). Skid, I've been semi-familiar with the Moncur set for some time now, after repeated listenings to the Night Lights program that featured this select (it's called "Destination Out" and can be found in the Night Lights Archives). I'd like for this thread to die down, so I'll post my full impressions on an already existing Moncur Select thread (Assuming there is one; I haven't checked yet).

johnny mercer + cohn/newman/green selects

Thanks for saving me some money, Larry! I'm still getting it! -
Bill did say that Philly Joe was his favorite drummer. (Boy would that have shocked my friends years ago as they drooled puristically over the Village Vanguard LPs and constantly panned Philly Joe! Don't get me wrong here: I love the VV material and Philly Joe. And I'd far rather have Philly Joe, or some other powerhouse drummer, behind me.) Count me as another huge fan of Philly Joe's work with Evans. CHIC and EDBE especially, but don't forget the lovely QUINTESSENCE, with Harold Land, Kenny Burrell, and Ray Brown. A beautiful session, and my favorite Evans quintet record.

I just got the Moncur set, and mine is #4902. If there are only 88 left, shouldn't this be on the Running Low section?

Yes you do. -
Unfortunately, you may be right. If Washington wins tonight, the Rangers are officially the worst team in the MLB.

Whatever happened to Doug Rauch? All I can gather from the notes to Caravanserai and Welcome is that he died all too soon, and that it was a tragic loss. What happened? I've done the Google search, Wikipedia, allmusic.... nothing.

My favorite Stanley Clarke is on Joe Farrell's MOON GERMS. His playing is unreal on that one.

No, not the Deluxe edition. Dang it! Trade in whatever version you have and get the Deluxe Edition. It is worth every extra penny!

Do you have Santana Live at the Fillmore 1968? Great version of Fried Neckbones. Get it cheap, though; used or something. This is probably the highlight of the album, which is an otherwise bore to me. Nothing against Bob Livingston, but man he had to go. The guy has a five-minute drum solo on "Freeway," which consists of nothing more than him playing straight 4/4 time. ZZZZZZZZZZ. If you ever need to know why Mike Shrieve is the catalyst for this band, listen to the outtakes of the first album before Shrieve joined. If Livingston had stayed in the band, we wouldn't have this thread going right now because they would never have gotten this far. Really, if you want the definitive "Neckbones," get the DE of the first album, which has the entire Woodstock concert.

On days like today, when I can really listen to this album, I am convinced that this is Santana's best album. I'm not one of those who screams for 5.1 surround-sound mixes of albums, but I cannot help but wonder at how this album would sound in a movie-theater-type setting, with the sound literally surrounding you. This music really is the sound of a literal caravan. Even more astounding, to me anyway, is how this stuff sounds so completely spontaneous. How could this stuff have been written down? It sounds like it's coming from someplace deep within, not off of some score sheet.
