As I said before, I'm watching this one. It'll be interesting to see how high this goes, but I know I would generally be interested in so many of them (esp. the OOP ones) that it might be worth the investment. Re-selling the ones I generally don't enjoy wouldn't be too difficult, I would think, and depending on the final bid of this auction, could actually re-coup the investment (or at least a good chunk of it). Quite frankly, this could easily be the deal of the year.

AOTW June 10-17: Joe Henderson POWER TO THE PEOPLE
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
As I said I saw him quite often before his last recording period for Verve. It became predictable after a while, same tunes, similar verrrrry long solos ..... What I liked about Keepnews producing Henderson was that he kept pushing him in all kinds of directions he never would have taken by himself - the results were always interesting, and sometimes great. Oh, I wish you hadn't said that..... now I'm gonna want to find the whole Milestone box! -
Either that, or anyone with more than 10,000 posts must also contain the following caption under their avatar: I NEED A LIFE!

It isn't available in my "Edit profile information" thing. Do I need to do lots more gratuitous posts? MG seems you need 10'000, yes... I'll probably die of old age before I get that many. Same here! I don't post that much; I wish we could be awarded post-counts by how many hours we log in here!

And 12 strikeouts to boot! Verlander pitched a masterpiece last night!

ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz...............

Cool! Very cool indeed! ESPN has all 27 outs on a video clip, and the nice thing about this no-no is you can see how much of a team effort a no-hitter is. Absolutely stunning defense on display in this game! Congratulations to Verlander and all the Tigers!

So would the Rangers! When the lockout started, the Rangers were in first place...... and they were 10 games under .500!!!!

Site sez it's expected to ship "early June." Well, I guess since it's not yet the 15th, technically it's still "early," I guess..... -
I remember enjoying his show when it was on Nickelodeon back in the 80's. Great show, and he always made you feel smart just for trying the experiments. Man, I miss that show! RIP Mr. Wizard

Also, if you look at it, you could argue that the '97 season was a bump in the road, since they also won the '96 division. It remains to be seen if, should they not win the division this year, the bump in the road becomes a major stumbling block. I hope!
-
Put in that context, it makes a LOT more sense. Not having paid that close attention to standings outside of the AL Worst, it slipped my radar that the Yanks have won every division for the last nine years. Well, that and the fact that I hate the Yankees, too, so I couldn't care less how they finish; and not just because they are the source of every Rangers playoff loss. Gad, how long ago was that?

A question for Dan and the rest of Red Sox nation: why the obsession with the Yankees? Why does it matter to you how good/bad the Yankees do at any given time? Case in point: a friend of mine was at the final game of the Red Sox winning the World Series against the Cardinals (he's a die-hard Cards fan). He was going to join the Red Sox celebration to offer congratulations and all that, and he said he heard the weirdest thing: instead of hearing things like "Red Sox rule" or "We Are The Champions" or something like that, all he heard was "YANKEES SUCK! YANKEES SUCK! YANKEES SUCK!" Why? Who cares? Your team just broke the curse and all you're (not you, Dan; just RS Nation in general) all concerned about rubbing it in the face of a team who has more than 20 rings! But then, never having had any kind of World Series action in my hometown (and probably never will in my lifetime), maybe I just don't understand the mentality.

AOTW June 10-17: Joe Henderson POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Now THAT I can totally agree with! But I also hear some serious funk in what Joe & the band are playing, too! And Shawn, as long as you have The Goddess as your avatar, we're gonna agree on just about everything! Seriously, though, I can put my finger on why I prefer Joe as a sideman, and I think it's the thing that endears him to his biggest fans: he pushes the envelope with his solos too far for my own tastes. I can take it in concentrated doses, but rarely for an entire album. -
I was wondering when you were going to drop in!

I have nothing to contribute to this thread other than that I love David's signature line. All that's missing is a picture of the Tasmanian Devil!
-
Well, Aki has been okay this year. IIRC, the last time he was given a lead, he lost it. Somehow, I doubt there are owners as clueless as Hicks who will forget about Gagne's proneness to injury. Stranger things have happened, though.

Thanks for the endorsement Al! By the way, my quartet is playing this coming thursday night at Greenville seafood and jazz on lower greenville avenue in Dallas. (7-11). Drop by if you can! I'll definitely try! I'd love to hear your quartet, and it has been WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long since I've gone to see some live jazz! -
Thanks for the reminder. Is there any way you can come with a few million dollars and buy the Rangers from the current clueless owner?
-
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe we should go into this together.

I can see where you, Mike, and Donald are coming from, and I don't totally disagree. But I still feel a more closer connection to the CTI albums he appeared on. Different strokes, y'know? -
AOTW June 10-17: Joe Henderson POWER TO THE PEOPLE
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
Yup, as well as The Real McCoy. Didn't care for either of them because: a) As I said before, I can only take Joe in concentrated doses, which also means I'm not a fan of any of his quartet settings; b) I don't particularly care for any of McCoy's work outside of the Coltrane quartet. I guess that could be the subject of another thread, but there have been SO MANY albums where McCoy was the pianist, and I ended up not enjoying the LP. Believe me, it is nothing I'm proud of; I have tried to enjoy McCoy's playing on so many BN (and other labels) albums, with little or no success. -

Folks, I can say with absolute confidence: BUY FROM SLIDE WITH CONFIDENCE! If these records are in as good a shape as the bunch he sold me last fall (as I'm sure they are), then these are great deals! -
FS/FT: Bobby Hutcherson Mosaic Select
Big Al replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Offering and Looking For...
A wonderful set, and an absolute bargain at that price. Now I wish I'd waited a little longer, as I got mine about two weeks ago! -
I just recently picked up this set and am enjoying this like nothing in recent memory. Tony sounds so freakin' HAPPY throughout these sessions! I mean, I don't know what he sounded like in the years between his playing with Miles and this group, but his level of inspiration is truly on the level of those great Miles Quintet recordings. His drums sound so BIG, too! I absolutely love the cover photo, where it looks like he's swingin' a frickin' redwood! And dig that SMILE! It's not hard for me to imagine him smiling like that throughout these sessions. Truly amazing stuff, and amazingly consistent throughout. This one is definitely a keeper!
