  1. Any solo by Yngwie Malmsteen
  2. Remembered this thread after checking the local Borders (online inventory search) for some titles they usually have in stock. That was depressing. Yes, I also remember when they had a huge jazz selection, but I guess it’s the sign of the times: with the price of CDs being what they are, online availability (and usually cheaper, too), and the average music buyer still under the impression that Kenny G is jazz, it’s a wonder that jazz sections still exist. Still, I suppose I can’t complain too loudly. Borders has yet to set up a store in Arlington, so driving to Fort Worth or Dallas to use a 25%-off coupon becomes something of a wash. Especially when there’s a brick-n-mortar down the road that carries the titles I’m looking for at Borders prices. Still, there’s that online thing. Still, I spend too much time agonizing over a CD purchase than I should.
  3. two fer two. ← Well, two for three ain't bad. Your team really makes a lot of errors huh? ← Yup. Both on the field AND off. The Twins have got to be feeling some sense of relief tonight, knowing how close they came to getting a 19-error 2nd baseman.
  4. Don't think, Meat; just throw!
  5. two fer two. ← Oh yeah? That just PROVES we suck more than you: we’re not even good enough to be the WORST in the league. I tell ya, these guys just aren’t trying hard enough!
  6. When the Rangers faced the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs in '96, the guys on ESPN could barely hold in their contempt for the Rangers. Their attitude was one of, "How dare these upstarts challenge our beloved Pinstripers? They are NOT worthy!"
  7. Jeez, we waited 86 years for as championship, and people are already hating us? ← I think people hated you before you won the Championship!!! ← Yyyyyyyyyyyup!
  8. A lot of those books by Ron Luciano are also great reads and absolutely hilarious! But my favorite has got to be "Together, we were Eleven Foot Nine" by Jim Palmer, detailing his career with the Orioles and Earl Weaver.
  9. I think Milton Bradley is the Johnnie Cochran of baseball.
  10. I think you're missing the point Al....No place like home (against the M's that is). Home against almost any other team in the game would just be more of the same. The Rangers are almost as bad as the Royals and the Mariners...almost. You're welcome (in advance). Felix on Thursday. ← Yeah, yeah, yeah...... don't remind me. Let me enjoy it while it lasts (IF it lasts, there's still two more games to be played!)
  11. There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home....
  12. Cool! Thanks!
  13. Hafta listen to this again. I used to own this, but it's been years since I did. Wonder if it'll sound at all familiar upon second listen?
  14. Well, I can’t say enough about that edition of Night Lights; it’s every bit as good as this track would indicate. Man, those Basie Octets swung. I think this 50’s Octet may be my favorite of the small groups! A-freakin’-men!!! Wouldn’t ya know it? The ONE time I don’t fall back on my usual guess of an unknown trumpet, and it turns out to be Woody! I think this track had me the most flummoxed, just because literally ALL of the players reminded me of other players, to wit: Woody Shaw=Donald Byrd Nathan Davis=Johnny Griffin Jean-Louis Chautemps=Pepper Adams Rene Urtreger=Kenny Drew Jimmy Woode=Paul Chambers Kenny Clarke=Philly Joe Jones My only explanation for the complete choke is that I was so confident that it was from that Johnny Griffin Sextet album on Riverside, it couldn’t possibly be anyone else. Ah well, ‘taint the first time I dropped the big one on a BFT! Darn tootin’ on both counts!!! An absolutely marvelous collection, Marty. Heck, I’m STILL listening to it! Have no idea when I’ll get around to getting all the discs from this collection, but this disc’ll be a nice reminder of what’s at the top of the wishlist! Thanks for a ton of fun, Marty!
  15. An absolutely beautiful track! I can see why you’d want to include it in your collection. But I coulda SWORE that wasn’t Pepper on bari! Well, thankfully, I wasn’t too trigger happy. Now that the answers are available, a bulk purchase will save a little money, anyway! So that wasn’t Freddie Green? Wow! Sure sounded like him! Well, count me as one of the Riverside-guessers; heck, I still can’t believe that’s Sam Rivers, but the more I listen to it, the more I believe it! So, two more questions about this disc: 1) Is the rest of the session as nice as this tune (for that matter, is the rest of this disc worth acquiring?) 2) Do the notes in the disc indicate why this session was rejected? I mean, this song could’ve easily fit on Tadd’s Magic Touch for Riverside. And, unfortunately, neither is the disc! Drat! I’ve been listening to this BFT nonstop, and maybe I don’t have the volume turned too loud, but I’m not hearing these sounds! Zounds indeed!!! Add this to the bulk purchase list (along with its companion, discussed a bit in the discussion thread!) Can’t believe I missed this! Blue’s a favorite, Sam Jones is my all-time favorite bassist (how’d I miss THAT one?), and it has that Riverside sound. Oh the shame of it. Add THIS one to the bulk purchase, baby!
  16. Missed the broadcast, just got done listening to the archive. Another fine show, Ghost! Those '50's sessions on the Columbia comp are worth the price of admission alone; pity they were spread over two discs! And yes, there is an answer to the current BFT in the broadcast! It's the kickoff track (not "Miss DD"). Had to dig out my BFT to see if I was just imagining things, but no, there it is!
  17. (edited just 'cuz I wanted to) Track 13 is the second track of this.... er, show. How's THAT for a coincidence? But I ain't tellin' who the tenors are. You gotta listen for yourself!
  18. Dan, yes it’s true, but I’d be surprised if it actually goes through. All that Minnesota’s offering are a couple of below-.500 pitchers, and we already have plenty of those, thankyouverymuch! How ‘bout that Kevin Gryboski? The O’s have gotta be laughing themselves silly over THAT one! But then, a lousy W-L record and an even lousier ERA has never stopped this bunch of bozos that allegedly “run” this team. (So far, they’ve only “run” them into the ground!) John, I predict a tie for dead last when this series is all over. 1-12 road trip. Un-freakin-believable!
  19. After reading your post, I listened to sound samples of "Chamber" as well as the Okeh disc. Well, I thought I was on a buying sabbatical..... Judging from the sound clips alone, this music sounds like the kind one would listen to in autumn, as the weather starts cooling off, the shadows get longer, and the leaves start changing color.
  20. A 1-11 road trip. Can this season get any worse?
  21. WoW! For reasons I can't understand, nailing that baritone has me in awe! I'd like to know as well. For those that have this, is the rest of this session worth acquiring the whole disc? I see it's OOP, but hopefully could be easily gotten. ME TOO!!!! Y'all can still comment if you like (and I hope y'all do!)
  22. My first forays into jazz CD buying were OJCs, mostly the popular titles, but as time wore on, some of the other titles started grabbing my attention (Vince Guaraldi, Bill Evans, a ton of the Riverside titles). The Riverside Records Story just may well be my favorite box set, as the music caused me to search out the sources of many of the songs (Tadd Dameron's Magic Touch immediately springs to mind). But the overhaul of the CCR catalog was a highlight for me. I grew up with this stuff, and while remastered sound (great as it is) won't ever replace the wonderful memories contained in scratchy old vinyl, the sheer power of the music comes flowing out of the speakers. Somebody in another thread said that Verve and Blue Note should have the same reissue policies as Fantasy, and I couldn't agree more! JSngry & Guy hit it on the head: so much to choose from, and yet there's STILL so much more that could be issued! Here's hoping it'll see the light of day someday!
  23. Cool! I wonder if the Japanese have given that same K2 treatment to other sessions like that?
  24. I am SO there!!! Y'know, at 11:20 EST, you could play "9:20 Special" for the folks in the Pacific time zone! BTW, any chance that an answer to a current BFT might be revealed? (for MartyJazz) (edited because I don't know my time zones....... sheesh!)
