At least I didn't guess Joe Sample for number 12!
-
SWEET!!! And I'm getting a drum set this week, so watch out Randy!!!!
-
Happy birthday, my friend! I am very glad you're back with us!
-
Now now, be nice!!! It's almost as if Jobim & Ogerman are saying, "We dare you to like this!"

Doors Manager Danny Sugerman Dead at 50
Big Al replied to 7/4's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yup! Also, reading/memorizing of Sugerman's book about the Doors is required during this phase. Stone's biopic, OTOH, was awful. -
WORD! I've been on the same med for about five years now, and if I go more than two days without it, watch out!
-
Tell me about it! You shoulda tried listening to Al's 91-track bonus disc. I've never heard a CD play scream out in pain like that before... You should hear the names my computer yells at me when I tell it, "Come on, just one more S.A.S. BFT!"

Man, I’m sorry to hear about that! According to the liner notes of The Carl Stalling Project, he actually wrote this stuff out!!! Now THAT takes no small amount of genius! You know it! How I wish I could go back in time to have seen THESE guys!!! That’s correct. This is from a 1989 CD that, were it to be upgraded, I still might keep the old version. Too many good memories attached, y’know? Your research provided the correct arranger, who I’ll elaborate on more in my answers! Couldn’t’ve said it better! Hehehe! FINALLY got someone with this track! Y’know, now I get what couw meant when he said “the man who’s had 26 go before him.” I gotta learn to start thinking like you guys! Like I said...... Nowhere in the album does it say who the trumpet player is. Maybe Jim R knows? Anyway, I think you’d like the album this is from. It reminds me of what you said about Clooney in your BFT. Me too, and Sparkplug rules! Remember when I went apeshit over a track that KNTU played from this album? Yeah, same album. Lemme just say that I am in awe that you nailed BOTH tenor men on this track. And again, Sparkplug rules!!! The whole album is like this. Oh so GREEEEEEAZY! Right down to the record cover! Amen and Hallelujah!!! I wonder how many sales of this disc will result from this BFT? Quite a few, I hope!!! Billy Higgins is da shizzit all over this album, and this track is just the tip, the cream of the crop if you will. It’s all good, though!

As one who's been there, done that, and still going, I'm also concerned as to how this is working for you. I must've missed your story the first time around, but I can identify with damn-near every word of it. It's like reading about my own path to meds. So yeah, Moose: please tell us how you're doing.

I'm tired and about to hit the hay, but wanted to thank JSngry & RDK for their comments, and promise a play-by-play commentary sometime in the next few days. And congrats to Sangrey for being the first to nail track 14! Figures a helluva tenor sax player would be able to identify BOTH tenor-men on that date! I guess this means everything on this disc has been identified. Surprised it took this long! I'm almost done typing up the answers for the Christmas BFT, and once those are done, both sets of answers will be posted simultaneously. Thanks again, all. P.S. Where the heck is catesta, anyway?!?!?!

That's Blakey? The disc I have sez it's Philly Joe! If it's Blakey, then I've inadvertently included my all-time favorite drummer, when I was actually going out of my way not to! I figured everyone would know Blakey! This also means I gotta re-write my answer for this tune!

Many MANY thanks to Jim R for making a copy of this disc for me, some 14 months after the actual BFT! I already knew the answers from looking at this thread (heck, it's the reason I wanted my own copy!), but wanted to share some random comments about some of the various tunes: Track 1 I already knew because I have the CD. A lovely CD at that! Great way to kick off a BFT! Track 2 I would’ve guessed as a Milt Jackson group from the mid-60’s with Cedar Walton on piano. I’m not too familiar with Lem Winchester, but if the rest of the album is as nice as this one track, I needs to pick this up pronto! PLEASE tell me this one is still in print! Track 3 would’ve had me COMPLETELY fooled! I would’ve been all set to guess a Miles Davis Seven Steps-era band. I mean, that rhythm section sounded EXACTLY like the great Kelly-Chambers-Cobb trio! I might have gotten Shorter, but I doubt it. Can’t believe I didn’t recognize my very favorite drummer, Art Blakey! Track 4 was nice. Wouldn’t’ve had a clue. Track 5 would’ve also had me buffaloed. Might’ve guessed the Kelly-Chambers-Cobb trio as the rhythm section after the arco solo, but then that would’ve just confused me more when compared to track 3! Track 6 was nice. Heck, knowing Jim, I might’ve even guessed Higgins, but would not have known the source of the recording, since the only one I’m familiar with is the version from Speaking of Jobim. Track 7 was okay, but I lost interest about halfway through. I must be one of the few people on the planet who doesn’t get Ed Bickert! Track 8 was also very nice. Wouldn’t’ve had a clue on this one, either. Track 9 same as track 8! Track 10 was cool! Would not have guessed Kessel, and also would’ve wished for a good percussion section! Track 11 same as track 9! Track 12 I liiiiiiiked!!!!! Would’ve had no clue, as usual, but I am hoping this isn’t OOP!!! Track 13 was okay. Maybe I’m just not in the mood for guitarists right now. (Jim? Jim? You okay? Sorry to make you collapse like that! It’ll never happen again, I promise!) Track 14 made me run screaming from the room!!!!! This was worse than that version of “Someone to Light Up My Life” from BFT 15 or 16 (don’t remember exactly!) Track 15 was very nice, and I might’ve even guessed Big Dex on soprano there. This only reminds me that I need to get this CD soon! Track 16 same as track 11! So hopefully a few of these discs are still in-print. If not, then I’ll just have to pester Jim for copies of ‘em!

Jack Wilson's EASTERLY WINDS is my favorite of the bunch!!! Having said that, and mind you I’m not complaining one bit, but I don’t understand why BMG gets all the Conns, but have hardly any of the latest RVGs. I mean, from an accounting standpoint, it would seem to me that there’s less of a risk involved in getting the cheaper RVGs than the more expensive Conns. But make no mistake: I’m certainly glad they have the Conns! Makes me wish I’d waited on the Hill and the Wilson. Ah well; it was money well spent!

Don’t know if there’s another thread dedicated to the Great Finds of CDs (I know there’s a thread like this for vinyl); I did a search and nothing comes up, so if there IS a thread for this, please tell me and I’ll delete this thread. I’m just giddy I found this: The Dissection and Reconstruction of Music from the Past as Performed by the Inmates of Lalo Schifrin’s Demented Ensemble as a Tribute to the Memory of the Marquis de Sade. Used for $8.00!!!! Funny thing is, I bought it thinking I would eBay this puppy; turns out I actually like this!
-
I'm really surprised! I figured Dan might've gotten this one, seeing as he bought the next album from one of the tenor players!
-
BINGO!!!!! couw gets the theme of this disc on his first guess!!!! His solo is one of the.... er, "main" reasons this track is on here! You are correct there! I love it when he plays/played like that! You got THAT right! Hey, that was MY gag!!! See my last post responding to Tom's very similar guess! CUTTITOUT, WOULDJA? I don't know, but he sure digs into it, on this one. Nice catch of the edit! "Mackie sharpening his knife on the alto." I love it!
-
Thank you! Thank you again! Amen to THAT, brother! I always thought so! B-) I'm pretty sure the tenor-player heard that throughout most of his career! I think this is the fourth or fifth time someone has inadvertently identified the piano-player! Y'know, you guys keep saying this is Max Roach playing the drums, and I may have to buy that Mosaic set. I'm just warning y'all! Ahhhh, my trick is working! (Insert evil laugh here!!!!) Blue Note did a nice thing, reissuing this album last year. One of my favorite releases (new or otherwise) from 2004! Great guesses all around, Tom!

You know it!!! Should be in a cartoon Hall of Fame, if ever one is built! Break it up, break it up; you can't hang around here!!! My favorite part from that cartoon. That, and when Bugs throws himself on the Papa Gorilla's "tender moicies."

After reading the notes to the Granz Jam Sessions on Verve box, I got the impression that Granz held similar jams on his Pablo label in the 70's. I know that a bunch are available on the OJC label, so are there any worth getting?

Larry Kart's jazz book
Big Al replied to Larry Kart's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
So THAT'S where it's coming from! -
Now that the Herbie Hancock CBS box is in a regular slip-cover packaging, is it worth getting? Is the music all that spectacular?

Happy birthday MM !!!
