  1. If they were made of dark chocolate, instead of milk chocolate, that'd solve that problem right quick. I can't eat too much milk chocolate all in one sitting -- to sweet. But man -- dark or even bittersweet chocolate -- I can really put that stuff away!! Oh, you KNOW it!!!! Dark chocolate RULES!!! In the meantime, I GOTS to find me some o’ these Kisses! (Ah well, so much for the diet. AGAIN!!!)
  2. Well, the Boys won. I guess Parcells has his eyes set on the Super Bowl now....
  3. Holy shit! What a rollercoaster of a game! And the Hawks still have 32 seconds left. I bet they come back.
  4. True that! But with a lot of Monk covers, there is the stamp of that artist's personality. I don't hear it on the Branford album.
  5. Parcells will believe his Boys are playoff bound all the way to the last game...... When do we get to see Drew Henson again, Bill?
  6. I listened to it once. It's good, reverent, and sometimes risky. A very worthy tribute, but I felt kinda silly listening to it: I mean, why listen to this when I can hear the originals in all their majestic glory?
  7. I dare you to start a Wynton thread! But then again, with at least three concurrent Crouch threads running, h emust be chompin' at the bit right now.
  8. That's Billy Higgins on this date, my man! And sparkle he does! This is a great session indeed!
  9. Amen to that!
  10. Dana- PM sent! I'm adding you to the list pending receipt of your mailing address! And..... NO FRUITCAKE FOR YOU!!! (Anyone wanna post a picture of the Fruitcake Nazi here?)
  11. Actually, that was my approach to the Short-Attention-Span BFT disc!
  12. How can I disagree with a guy whose child/avatar is so darn cute? You know, you could always rock the little tyke to sleep with this CD!
  13. Egad, what is it with HotMail all of a sudden? I'm not gettin' ANYONE'S e-mails lately!!! Jim, I just added you to the list, but can you PM your mailing info to me? Thanks!
  14. Wow, I guess this album is second only to Hubbard’s Night of the Cookers in terms of ongoing debate. This album puts me to sleep as well, but in a good way. The mood is very relaxing. I can see how people would be disappointed in this album if they were expecting something along the lines of The Natural Soul; ah well, to each their own. But I agree with Soul Stream: this is gospel-flavored R&B at its finest. TO address an earlier question of some good Green to get, I would HIGHLY recommend getting the four-disc Retrospective (join BMG and get it free, or get it cheap anyway if you’re already a member). There’s a sampling of ALL of his best albums, and from there you can decide which avenues to pursue!
  15. Remember when Kiss put out four solo albums in ’78? The Ace Frehley album KICKED ASS and was as close to the spirit of Kiss as any of their regular albums (in fact, even closer than the other three solo albums combined.) Pity that he couldn’t keep his act together, as the band started going downhill after this.
  16. Elvis Costello (who you mentioned in your excellent analysis) has stated in numerous interviews that there was no such thing as New Wave. He says that the term "New Wave" first appeared as the title of an awful American compliation of anonymous pop music (vaguely attempting to cash in on the sudden hipness of punk). Costello (who was recording his first album for Stiff records at the time) claims that it was he who (as a joke) started writing promotional material for Stiff that used the slogan "Surfing on the New Wave," and the next thing he knew, people were talking about him as a "New Wave" rather than "Punk" artist. Certainly people like Costello, Nick Lowe, and Joe Jackson were far too musical to be lumped in with punk (the point of which was to promote bands that could barely play three chords, such as the Pistols). I'm not sure I really believe in "New Wave" as a genre, though, since it is far too diverse (as your essay shows. You left out Blondie, by the way). Many of the groups you site as "post-punk" and "New Wave" were, in fact, New Romantics (the Human League, Spandau Ballet, etc). For myself (and I'm a big Costello fan), I regard the early 80s as a fairly barren period for music. There's very little pop from the early and mid-80s that I still listen to (Costello is an exception, as is Prince's seminal "Sign O The Times"). But their music is timeless. (In addition to the three you mentioned, I’d also add XTC). Their music doesn’t seem to reflect any particular genre: you can’t listen to one of these guys and say “Oh they are SO late-70’s or early-80’s.” Heck, their music really does sound like it could’ve been made yesterday! I guess when I think of a band who drastically changed at the turn of the decade, I think of Kiss. Once the make-up came off, all that was left was a fifth-rate hair metal band. Hell, by the end of the decade, they were doing a Michael Bolton song (which of course became a freak hit): "Forever." (Thankfully, they got their act together for the ferocious Revenge, but by that time the damage was done). As for the Who, I completely agree. Stack ANY of their 60’s singles against anything in the halcyon daze of the punk era (including my favorites, The Clash, whose Give ‘em Enough Rope is as brilliant a Who ripoff as you’ll ever find!) and they all pale by comparison. Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere baby!!!
  17. not yet received!!! better send out a search party!! Ditto, the southeast Florida contingent also includes Dan Gould and myself. We have yet to receive the coveted BFT 20. Checking in from Texas, and no sign of a BFT yet! Ah well, 'tis the holidaze after all. -_-
  18. Gotta disagree with ya there, my friend! As greeeeazy as it gets to these ears! Especially with the Holy Trinity of Greeeeaze: Green-Patton-Dixon! Yeah, we need MUCH more RVGs from these guys!!! But I’m not throwin’ anything your way! Everyone’s got their own preferences!
  19. Yeah, get back to work, ya bastard! (Can ya tell I like that word? I always imagine Ric from The Young Ones whenever I type or read it!)
  20. All the more reason to love Sam Rivers!
  21. Arrrggghhh!!!! Brad is a bastard for alerting us to the archives of Ghost’s wonderful show. However, Ghost is an even BIGGER bastard for putting together an astoundingly outstanding show detailing the works of Jackie McLean & Grachan Moncur III. Man, I wish there was a way I could listen to this show in my car. The insights and commentary are fantastic, and the cuts from Hipnosis live up to the hipness of the title! And in a little bit, the folks at Mosaic are gonna jump to the top of the DIRTY ROTTEN BASTARDS list. Ah well, Christmas comes early I guess! Seriously, I am so glad these shows are archived since the show is on so late, which doesn’t matter cuz I only have dial-up at the house. Thanks again, Ghost, and a fine job you are doing!
  22. Alright, that's five, and someone else voted in the process! Come on now, show yerselves! :rsmile:

  24. WAAAAIT a second: he didn’t know the answer to such a simple question? H&R Block?!?!?!? I don’t buy that for a second! But then maybe it's because I'm an accountant that the questions seems more obvious....
