As much as I enjoy Latino, the recording quality isn't always too good. On some tracks, the bongos are too loud. ("Too loud, man.") Then there's that damn Cuban flute, which is about the most shrill instrument I've ever heard!!! But Cal's vibes, mmmmmm........

If the FCC looks into this, I would hope they would also look into all the crap that airs on the FOX Network. Yeah, right.....

So I've got the self-titled album that Verve released in their LPR series, and it is all sorts of beautiful! What an arranger this guy is! What else is out there that's worth digging?

mikeweil's BFT #18 inspired me to check out Russell Gunn's Ethnomusicology, which I didn't particularly dig, but I still like that "Woody 1" track! The same BFT inspired me to (re)buy Cal Tjader's Black Orchid, with Latino thrown in for good measure!

The more I listened to this, the more I enjoyed those specific tracks I enjoyed the first time around. Here’s hoping the “unknown” musicians on track 2 become more well-known!

Track 2: The guitarist reminds me of Peter Leitch. In fact, were it not for the sax player, I would’ve thought it was something from Up Front, as the drummer sounds like Smitty Smith. So, that’ll be my guess—Leitch & Smith on their respective instruments—even though I have no clue as to who the sax player is.
