Favorite cartoon DVD box sets?
Big Al replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes. we picked ours up at Target today. I don't know about anywhere else, but here in Arlington, Target is selling it for $24.99. When you consider this is a 4-DVD set, with each DVD having stuff on both sides thereby making this the equivalent of an 8-DVD set, this is a steal!!! And yes, it is still just as funny!!! -

...because we are going into the studio...

Through various shady undisclosed sources (mainly, I made ‘em all up), I have been able to obtain early demos of the new Organissimo album. I can tell you that the music is unequivocally brilliant, and should cause a fuss like nothing this side of Smile. The tapes I’ve heard reveal a band in transition, with one foot in the traditional greeeeazy blues they’re so steeped in, and the other foot in a combination of Ornette-inspired avant-garde mixed with Styx-inspired rock & roll. Don’t ask me how, but it WORKS!!! The studio chatter is also a treat! Check out these highlights: Unidentified voice #1: He cahn’t play the fucking solo!!! *********** Joe: Randy, what’s wrong, man? You’re not your usual fiery self! Randy: I don’t know, man; I just can’t get into it. Jim: Here, read this; this’ll get ya goin’. (loud growling sound from Randy, fierce pounding on the drums, excellent take of unidentified original ensues) Engineer: Great take guys! Joe: Damn, Jim. What’d you show him? Jim: This. I printed it off the forum. (Five second silence, followed by horrified gasp) Joe: Shit man; that’s harsh. I can’t believe he’d switch sides like that. Jim: Yeah, who knew he was a closet Yankees fan all these years? *********** Jim: Here guys, I got one for each of you. Joe: A “WWJD” bracelet? Randy: Uh, Jim.... Jim: No guys, it’s not what you think. These stand for “What Would Jimmy Do.” Joe & Randy: RIGHT ON!!!! *********** Anyway, these are the highlights. I hope they make it to the second disc! -
No, no, no. See, he got the up side, I got the down side. See, there’s two sides to every Schwartz!
-
Shit! I hate it when I get my Schwarz tangled!

Make It Funky!!!

You have the ring. And I see that your Schwarz is as big as mine. :rsmile:

Maybe there could be a Special Limited Edition 2-CD set: Disc one would be the actual album; Disc two would be the studio chatter/cussin', false starts, breakdowns (musical and otherwise), and alternate takes! I'd buy that in a second! -
How does he sleep? How do the fans sleep?

I want to make something perfectly clear...

Just another vote of confidence for Al, as I've also done many transactions with him. In fact, one disc I sent him broke in transit; not only did he NOT make a fuss, but he was gracious in his correspondences with me on this matter, and we were able to work something out to reimburse him for his loss. To this day, I still believe he should've gotten more for his loss. -
Yeah, I went back and ordered the Stitt! Not sure if I'll get the Kirk, as he's usually not my cup o' tea, but y'never know!

FWIW, as much as I can't stand Matchbox 20, it seems that theirs is a unique sound, for better and worse. I mean, you hear a song of theirs, and you know instantly it's Matchbox 20, and it has everything to do with that guy's voice. Sorta like hearing a Rod Stewart song. Now if you wanna talk about dreadful corporate cookie-cutter "rock," how about groups like Nickelback, Incubus, Three Doors Down, etc etc etc that all sound like Load-era Metallica? They all have the same sludgy guitars, droning basses, plodding drums, and a guy whose voice screams like he wishes he were as cool as James Hetfield once was. If anyone knows how to tell these groups apart, could ya tell me? Matchbox 20, while a worthy target, has at least their own sound going for them. Which ain't much, BTW.

They’ve added some Verve LPRs! Thankfully, none of the ones I already got! Illinois Jacquet – Desert Winds James Moody Johnny Griffin – JG Roland Kirk – Live in Copenhagen Sonny Stitt – Personal Appearance Ordered the Jacquet & the Griff!

That prompted me to give that album a spin again. Great stuff, but it isn't anything like the McFarland session. It's interesting to consider how different two sessions, with the same or similar personnel, can turn out to be. Interestingly, AMG only gives the McFarland session only two stars. Ah well, whatta they know? BTW, I'm pretty sure the Laws & Jackson CTIs are still in print. I’m tellin’ ya, if you think at all positively about Laws, ITB will move you like nothing else. His arrangement of “Gymnopedie” is worth the price of admission alone. Don’t listen to it without a box o’ Kleenex next to you.

You've got one of the grooviest avatars of anyone here!

The Rangers just swept the A’s. Went into the bottom of the ninth behind 4-2 and scored three runs to win it. SWEET!!!!!!! Of course, this would’ve been a helluva lot more significant if it’d been on the road, but I’ll take ‘em however I can get ‘em!
-
No worries, we talked plenty about you, Al. I should hope so! B-)
-
Yeah, straight from the Morrissey school of "I'm-so-cold-and-I'm-shivering-in-my-loneliness" sung like he's in a perpetual state of "I'm about to sneeze." Al, I like you...don't start rippin' on the Mozz...things could get ugly...

I'm just glad I've avoided the latest religious thread like the plague!

THAT'S what I was hoping for!!!

MY goodness, this sounds almost like Wes Montgomery's Tequila, even sharing the same bass & drum players. As far as Hubert Laws goes, the only albums of him that I've heard are on Milt Jackson's Goodbye and his own In the Beginning. I really enjoy the Jackson, but ITB is on a whole 'nother plane; probably in the same stratosphere of emotion that the present McFarland album does for Brother Shrdlu. I need to seek this out!
