  1. And responded!
  2. Oh, I knew it wasn't Greg Lake. I was just being silly! Figures the one time it IS Fletcher Henderson is the one time I DON'T guess Fletch. You'd think I'd have this process figured out by now! Can't remember: has disc 2, track 3 been identified yet? I wanna look into that. And, oh yes, the Skatalites!!! That was a FUN track!
  3. Alright! Disc 2 meanderings and flummoxings at your service! Track 1: Alright, since this song is going on for 300 hours, time for a brief confession: I distinctly remembered the artist on this track, because when I saw the artist and the length of the track, my first thought was, “Oh great. Y’know, I got rid of that album for a reason. Well, maybe I’ll hear something different this time.” Even listened to it briefly before saving it to hard disk. I didn’t come back to it until now, but I relayed this story to Hot Ptah and he informed me that I was thinking of a different album by the same artist. He also informed me I might like this track a lot better than the one I was thinking of. He was right!!! Track 2: This is making me smile! All concerned sound like they’re having a blast! Ska! Ska! Skaaaaa!!!! DAMN, I love this!!! Whatta grooooooooooove!!! Track 3: Ooooh, love that Fender Rhodes to start the song. Mmmmmm! Lovely flute! If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess Jobim. But it actually has that wonderful CTI sound I dig so much, so I’m gonna guess Hubert Laws. Oh my Lord, this is heartbreakingly beautiful! Track 4: Teddy Wilson. No question. I would’ve guessed this even if I hadn’t seen the answers. No clue as to the album or the year, but with Teddy, does that even matter? Swing, taste, refinement, like a fine wine! Track 5: Nice swinging clarin..... YIKES!!! Someone stepped on the cat!!! Okay, maybe he sneezed or something. Nice groove to this one as well. Sounds like Elvin on the drums or a reasonable facsimile! Track 6: Okay, I guess. Nothing too terribly interesting. Track 7: Okay, THIS is what I thought track 1 was gonna sound like! This one’s all over the map. Internationally, not just domestically! Ooof! Too much! On to the next track. Track 8: NOW we’re talking my language!!! Love this Afro-Cuban stuff from the late 40’s! Track 9: Ah, I should know this one. Sounds like a Benny Goodman group. Ah criminy, who was that arranger BG used in the early 40’s, not named Fletcher Henderson? That’s who it sounds like, the arrangement that is. Track 10: Holy cow! Did someone turn on the TRON DVD? Has Herbie Hancock finally gone ..... wait, this really does sound kinda Headhunterish! Oh please tell me this groove lasts another hour or so!!!! And dig those vibes! Wow! Track 11: What the EFF EFF EFF????? Son of Jaws! Oh em gee and an el oh el!!!! Gawd, that was boring, self-indulgent, aimless, pointless. Sounded like an instrumental break from an ELP record if Greg Lake was playing upright bass. Track 12: Argh! I should know THIS one as well. I can hear Paul Lynde as the Hooded Claude: “I’ll get you, Penelope Pitstop!” Here comes the Ant Hill Mob: “Come on, youse guys.” “[giggle giggle giggle] Penelope’s gonna be eaten up by the giant alligator.” “[sob sob] Poor Penelope!” “Step on it, Chuggaboom!” “Sputter koff chug chug chug!” “BLAAAAAST!” Track 13: Oh when the saints go marching out into the Quarter and stagger around, oh I want to be in that gutter when the saints come stumbling out! This has ceased to be about guessing and has turned into bizarre performance art on the part of the BFT Uncoordinator! Track 14: OH, I AM LOVING THIS!!!! Thank you for sharing this. Is that Tom Lehrer? Y’know, every Christmas, I try to find a new Christmas song or album that I’ve never heard before, and that ends up being the catalyst for remembering that year’s Christmas. Guess what song is now the Official Big Al Song of Christmas 2009? Thanks Ptah! And thank you for THE wildest BFT I’ve ever had the pleasure of participating in!!!! THIS is why I love the BFT, and IMHO this BFT truly captures the spirit of the BFT! Way to go there, rookie!
  4. Just heard about this on the radio this morning. Man, this is sad! Remote Control was as great as Match Game, AFAIC.
  5. I thank you, Shane, my wallet thanks you, and the bill collectors thank you! My son, on the other hand..... However, IF for any reason the deal falls through.....
  6. Updated to show holds and sales. I've created two sheets within the spreadsheet (because I'm just that anal): one tab for the HOLDS and one for the SOLDS.
  7. I must go there!!!!!!
  8. That is the truth. I started yelling out the window for the neighbors to turn that racket down, until I realized it was me!
  9. AARRGGHHH!!!! Yes, PLEASE someone buy it before I throw reason out the window and not give a rat's ass about the fact that I can't make the house payment right now!!!
  10. 11. Errors corrected! The Charles Earland CD is Black Talk. Heath and Getz on hold!
  12. And Dallas beats Philly last week and doesn't show up in Green Bay this week. Strange game, this football......
  13. Doin' some serious clearing out. Here's a link to the GoogleDoc spreadsheet: Buy Big Al's CDs here! If interested, post here first then PM. I've tested the link and the file to make sure it's functional, so if anyone has any errors, let me know. Thanks! Terms added 11/16/09, 1:35 pm CDT: 1) Shipping is included for US/Canada shipments only (since ubu requested his before I realized I'd forgotten to set the terms, his will be shipped postage included). 2) PayPal preferred (acrearick@hotmail.com), checks accepted from known domestic board members.
  14. Drat! Left my notes for disc 2 at work! Phooey! If I don't get to it this weekend, then I'll simply post 'em on Monday. Reading these answers is a blast! Love the "BINGO" pictures! But I canNOT believe I didn't recognize BB on that last track of disc 1. GEEEEZZZZ!!!!! INCONTHEEE.... ah hell, no it isn't! A lot of the rest of those were VERY cool suprises!
  15. Oy vey, did I botch this one up! Regarding the discs: I do not know why there was a problem, but I will make new copies and send them out. This one's on me, as I was half-asleep when I burned these and was in a hurry to send them out so I didn't test them. Everyone to whom I sent out CDs will have replacements sent out tomorrow. I greatly apologize for this, and can only offer as an excuse my usual inability to say no to anything unimportant (this falling into the "important" category!) and not getting enough sleep. Regarding the download: again, this one is on me. I do not know how I managed to only ZIP the first eleven tracks of disc 2, but that's exactly what happened. Tracks 12-14 are on the home computer, to which I am remotely hooked and will be uploading shortly. As soon as they are ready to go, I will send the link to Hot Ptah and he'll send the PM to everyone. Once again, I apologize profusely and hope this doesn't reflect badly on Hot Ptah, because he put together a helluva BFT.
  16. I've received everyone's PMs about the faulty discs. I will get to them, but it will be later. I apologize for the problems!
  17. Disclaimer: unbeknownst to Hot Ptah, when he sent me the discs for converting to uploading, the answers revealed themselves on the software I was using. (Apparently, Windows Media Player doesn’t show the answers; RealPlayer and Rhapsody do, and that's what I was using). I only bring this up for two reasons: 1) The ignorance displayed below is genuine. I forgot the answers pretty much as soon as I saw them because I didn’t recognize anything or anybody (except one player, and I’ll likely have forgotten that when I get to that track). 2) If by chance I DO get something correct, it’s a fluke and not because I had the list in front of me. That outta the way, let’s get into this! Track 1: Sounds like a drummer-led big band, but no clue as to who the drummer is. I wanna say Gene Krupa just because it reminds me of the Gerry Mulligan album he did for Verve, but it’s not from that. Very nice way to start a BFT! Track 2: My first thought was something from Russell Gunn’s ETHNOMUSICOLOGY, but I don’t remember any ensembles like this. This track reminds this old rocker that you can make any matter of cacophonous racket, but as Marion Brown’s “Spooks” proved, if it’s got a good beat and I can groove to it, BRING IT ON!!!! I just wish the mix was a little higher, but oh well! Track 3: If this is from Fats Waller’s solo piano solo record that Bluebird put out on a 2-LP set some years back, which I used to own..... in the words of Paul Desmond, “I may shoot myself!” Track 4: Well, the obvious guess would be the Hot Club of France, which means it can’t be the Hot Club of France. But you knew that I would think it WASN’T the Hot Club of France, so you deliberately put a HCoF track on here to trick me, so I clearly have to guess the HCoF. But you were counting on my deep sense of trickery and tomfoolery in a BFT, so I clearly cannot guess the HCoF. But then, you also had to realize that I never get any tracks right on a BFT, so I clearly have to guess the HCoF. Now, where was I? Oh yes, Australia, which we all know is.... hey, is that a Rodent of Unusual Size???? Track 5: See the previous guess, but substitute Earl Hines for the Hot Club of France. Inconceivable!!! Track 6: Starts off sounding like the opening theme to the PowerPuff Girls. Deeper in. it sounds like some latter-day Airto/Flora and/or Dom Um Ramao. Just when I think it’s gonna lose me, something else grabs my attention: is that Gabor Szabo on the guitar? Track 7: See track 4, but substitute Monk for the HCoF. Never get involved in a land deal with a Cicilian. Track 8: A chicken? Why a chicken? Why not a duck? Love the groove, though! What is this, “Jazz Impressions of Old MacDonald?” Track 9: Augh! Where have I heard this before? One of the Lee Konitz Duets? Nope, here comes the band and the fidelity suggests something recent. My my my whatta KILLER groove!!! Bari sax is kickin’ it and that has to be the filthiest guitar solo on a jazz record! LOVE it!!! Track 10: “Angel Eyes?” One of the strangest sounding grooves I’ve ever heard, but the emphasis is on the groove so it’s alright with me! Track 11: Wait wait wait... I gotta start this again. This is too pretty to just go by. OH, what a beautiful intro!!! And the rest of the song is just as gorgeous. I wanna guess Vince Guaraldi just because it sounds like something he might do. Track 12: Ahhhh! Another big band! Sounds like early 30’s. Maybe a Louis Armstrong or Earl Hines big band? Roy Eldridge on the trumpet? I’m just throwing out names here.... Track 13: Alright, I’ve listened to this twice and it just isn’t making an impression on me. Sorry. Track 14: "Hey Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucy! Come down offa that ledge! There's stormy weather outside!" Track 15: Another one that lost my interest. Sorry. Track 16: Ah crap. I know I said I don’t have any of these or that none of the answers jumped out at me when I glanced at ‘em. But I know I have.... I have..... ah shit, I have the blues. Never mind. Is this the Count with Joe? Arrrrgghhh!!! What are you, the Dread Pirate Robert or something? See track 4. AGAIN!!! What’s worse is that this just exposes how clueless about even the most obvious tracks I am! INCONTHEEEEEVABLE!!! :D Oh I am having a blast, and hope everyone knows what movie I keep referring to! Onto "disc 2!"
  18. Turn off the sound and listen to Dark Side Of The Moon with the movie playing. I thought that was a hoax until I tried it myself. It's not a perfect match, but when it DOES match..... prepare for the goosebumps & shivers! It'd be cool if one of these Deluxe Editions included this on it.
  19. A fantastic BFT Joe, with some of the most interesting answer comments I've ever read! I hope you'll participate again soon! Like Hot Ptah, I have a new shopping list!
  20. (drattit! hit the reply button on accident and don't feel like editing it. post count means everything!) Track 9: (continued) Stan Getz???? Well now, this changes everything. I think. What's that LP on Prestige, "Early Stan" or something like that? Isn't Terry Gibbs on that? But this vibist is too subdued. And the fidelity suggests some Verve from the 60's. Maybe it's Dave Pike on vibes? Track 10: Sounds like Wynton warming up with the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra...... zzzzzzzz..... Track 11: "Doooooooo..... doooooooo...... DREEEEEEEEEENNNNN!!!!! And he comes in..... 'good eeeeevening.' And he was so happyyyyy..... to scare you to deeeaaaaath. And he opened that door....... EEEEHHRHHRRRRHEHHRHEEHHHRRRRR......." And yet, I love endless drones like this!!! Sounds like Elvin locked himself in the basement with an old Casio Wurlitzer hybrid, set it on an endless loop, and went to town! Either that, or it's a Genesis demo from the FOXTROT era. One or the other..... Track 12: Mmmmm mmm mmm dig that groooove! Percussive piano trio.... no grunting..... Hampton Hawes in a Monk mood? Jack DeJohnette? Track 13: Sounds like it's incorporating "Ruby My Dear" among other Monk tunes. Very interesting. Sounds like late-era Monk, like past Columbia into the 70's. Track 14: Tenor is too squawky for me, but I do like the loping beat and the piano! Ah, I've run out of time. Off to the answers!
  21. The answers are up, so I'm gonna try and finish this before peeking! Track 8: Has kind of a "Filles de Kilmanjaro" feel to it. Me likey, so far! Flute taking the first solo, late 60's sound, could this be Hubert Laws? No, that can't be right; this doesn't sound like him. Joe Farrell maybe? Whatever. I love this era and this sound. Very Herbie Fat Albert Mwandishi sounding! (At this point, I want to thank Joe for providing the Flash streaming format. Having to start each trach individually helps me to stay focused on each individual song, and prevents them from blurring into each other. Great idea, Joe!) Track 9: Oooooh, piano-vibes-bass. Brings to mind that one track from Hutch's HAPPENINGS, track 2, can't remember the name. This isn't that song, but it sure has a similar feel. VERY nice! This one'll get repeated listenings!
  22. Gotcha down for August 2010. Thanks!
  23. Greg, for whatever it's worth, I'm usually available. I'm not that good, but when it comes to free gigs you'll definitely get your money's worth! Seriously, I wanna play. If you don't mind the fact that my axe is an acoustic fretless bass guitar, sign me up!!!! 'course, I'm not too young but still pretty jaded. But man.... I just wanna PLAY!!!!!
  24. Why must you steal my spotlight, you self-absorbed selfish little shit? Cometothinkofit, I may go ahead and get a month's head-start and join in you in your alcohol-induced haze. You're welcome to continue to yours into March with me for my 40th birthday funeral!
  25. Oy whatta month!!!! Squeezing in time to listen and comment with apologies now for the uncharacteristic (for me) brevity! 1) Sounds like a Med Flory big band kind of arrangement (like I would know what that sounds like. The name just jumped to mind.) 2) Ooooooh! Starts very nice! Almost Christmas-y! I'd like to know who this is! Wait, is this from that Oscar Peterson SOUL ESPANOL album (came out as a Verve LPR a few years back)? 3) Kinda reminds me of the Shelly Manne PETER GUNN album. Or Yo La Tengo with a sax solo! 4) Roland Kirk on multiple saxes, whistles, and other assorted noise-makers, with a special appearance by Davy Jones of the Monkees on lead tambourine! A lot going on here, and a helluva groooooooove!!!! Love it! 5) Another nice groove to start with! Waaaaaaait...... guitar instead of piano, which sounds TREMENDOUSLY like Jim Hall (nobody backs a sax like him), maybe Joe Lovano on the sax.... once again, as usual, HAFC™, but lovin' it just the same! Wait a second.... when did the piano arrive??? 6) Okay when it's moving, takes too many rubato detours, and goes on FORRRREVVVVERR!!! 7) Someone who likes Trane's pianoless soprano sax excursions, that's for sure. That's all for now. Hope I can finish before the answers get posted. If not, I like what I've heard so far!!!
