  1. Don't know about y'all, but I love the YELLOW SUBMARINE remaster. But then, I think I'm one of six people who really enjoy side two!
  2. "Big Al is uploading the downloads? Yaaaaaaay!" Got 'em saved, tagged, & ready to compress & upload. Now to actually LISTEN to the thing!!!
  3. Frank-lee, he's B-ing too Frank.
  4. I'll second the request for a Shelly Manne Blackhawk box. Also, Red Garland's Galaxy recordings. Heck, even a 2-CD set called "The Complete August 1979 Galaxy Recordings of Red Garland" would be alright with me.
  5. Several Shades of Jade/Breeze from the East - Cal Tjader I love practically anything by Cal Tjader, and even these two have one gem each (particularly "Black Orchid"). While there are certainly much worse albums by much lesser artists, it's these two that cause me the most nausea, simply because Cal was capable of so much more. It's on a par with Tony Bennett's SINGS THE HITS OF TODAY (or whatever album that was where he would vomit between takes because he was so disgusted with the recording situation).
  6. I have always thought that "5 By Monk By 5" was one of his greatest albums. Thad Jones plays great on the album, fitting in with Monk but keeping his unique style. To me, the ensembles are more cohesive, the rhythms more swinging, than on most of Monk's Riversides. In my opinion, apart from "Brilliant Corners", "5 By Monk By 5" is his best album ever. My thoughts exactly! :tup :tup
  7. Y'all are listing quite a lot of my favorite drummers...... ah well, diff'rent strokes I guess.....
  8. I bet FFA never mentions Mogie on his FacePage ever again!
  9. Caught the Greg Waits Quartet featuring Jim Sangrey at the Scat Jazz Lounge last night. These guys were all sortsa in the pocket, grooves so thick you could feel your arteries hardening as they played! And dig their new bass player: right ON the beat! Much better than that last guy they had filling in for 'em last month (although, to be fair, I thought he missed the chance to echo Sangrey on the intro to "In a Mellow Tone" like that last guy did. That was really cool. Wonder whatever happened to him? ) Greg, Jim, you guys need to record this stuff. I'd buy it in a second. In fact, if there was some way I could record you guys at your next Sandaga gig, I'd do it.
  10. Sign me up.... you've got 3 daughters to feed! Plus, if it embodies the spirit of your dad (like his writing did, especially Under the Sun), then this will be a wonderful treat to listen to.
  11. Art Farmer seems to be the wildcard here on what is essentially a first-rate Messengers date. I like his blend with Mobley (apparently Silver did as well, using them on a couple of his dates).
  12. Glad to see your endorsement on this one, MG. I might be able to get ahold of this one in the coming days. Add my endorsement as well. As transcendent as the trio albums are, I've always preferred Red with a horn (or horns).
  13. Congratulations, Jim! She's a cutie, just like her sisters. Enjoy it now, man, cuz in about 10 years.... watch out! (And apologies to you for not paying attention: I didn't even know y'all were expecting! )
  14. If the sales for the Shelly Manne Blackhawk discs falls through, let me know. I'll take 'em.
  15. First was 'Shaun of the Dead'? I need to see BOTH of these movies!
  16. Fuck A-rod! Signed: a disgruntled Mariner fan with a good memory. AND Teixeiria. Signed: a disgruntled Rangers fan who's tired of seeing history repeat itself on a regular basis.
  17. I've added you guys to the list!
  18. Yes! Those quartet tracks (remainder can be found on THELONIOUS MONK/SONNY ROLLINS) are pure bliss!
  19. Nor would he be able to find anyone willing to be his simpering puppet the way Wade does. This team plays like a bunch that has lost all respect for its coach and shows even less respect for its owner. I just wonder how much longer JonesCo is going to put up with Flozell Adams continuing to shoot their drives in the foot. Going on three years now and he's shown absolutely ZERO signs of improvement: still getting called for false starts, still making dumb plays that get flagged (holding, etc). That said, Miles Austin is THE MAAAAAAN!!!! He and Jay Ratliff were the Cowboys saviors today. Which is a lot more than Jones, Phillips, Garrett, and Romo deserved today.
  20. Will report back once I listen to it. Still reveling in the Garland Quintet stuff! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
  21. Completely off-topic here, but THANK YOU for mentioning GoogleDocs. I've been racking my brains for months now trying to remember where I saw this online spreadsheet and that's where it was! :
  22. Coupla things. First, I believe that Chuck indicated this and almost all of the "intelligent" packages were developed under Fantasy's watch, and just were released by Concord after the transfer. Second, good luck hearing back from Concord on any of this. They've ignored several emails I've sent on related topics over the past couple of years. I am very thankful this set finally saw the light of day after many years, but don't expect much new. Maybe if the work was already done on the Miles sets in the past we'll see them, but I agree that the Miles/Rollins set, while very nice in and of itself, may not be a good harbinger of what is (not) to come. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath, just remaining hopeful. I remember sending them an e-mail this time last year asking about this particular box, and they actually responded in a couple days time, IIRC. Funny thing is, at that time, Concord says there were no plans to release this box. I'm glad they changed their mind!
  23. Got mine yesterday and put in disc four immediately. I don't know about the rest of y'all, but "All Morning Long" NEVER sounded this good, IMHO. And it's not like I have the greatest sound-system in the world. Jamil Nasser's bass is so PRESENT. The whole disc sounds extremely roomy, uncluttered, and organic. I can't wait to listent to the rest of the box. Speaking of the "All Morning Long" sessions (for lack of a better term), I am *so* glad the CD programmers decided NOT to be strictly chronological by putting "Tenor Madness" at the beginning of disc 2, thereby letting everything else fall nicely into place. This is ESPECIALLY effective on the "All Morning Long" sessions, leaving them on two discs instead of staggering them over three discs on the old box. (For that matter, all three of these boxes have been very good about keeping all of the sessions as together as possible. This makes for much easier listening, IMO) My only complaint is with the booklet, and even that is a minor one: mostly discographical stuff like incorrect track listings when notating which side of a record the songs are on, as well as other typos whose details apparently are so minute their escaping my cluttered mind. Overall, a HIGHLY enjoyable release, and one I would've gladly paid retail price had I not found the Best Buy link (thanks again, guys)! On a semi-related note, I continue to be impressed by Concord's packaging of boxes like this, and wish they would do more of them. I know that a similar plan was supposed to be in place for all of Miles' Prestige recordings; with the release of the Miles/Sonny collection, I wonder what the odds are that the remaining sessions will be released in box form. I e-mail Concord about this; if I ever hear back from 'em, I'll post it here.
  24. Correct. BASRA was supposed to be issued in the US, but was pulled at the last minute. And that's all I'm gonna say, lest this thread gets dumped into the Politics forum......
