Well, now I know where Weird Al got the lyrics for his song. And how did this calendar find out about my relationship with Della & Ed Stella?

I still want to see "Burn After Reading." Of the Coen brothers' films I've seen: I remember enjoying "Raising Arizona," but it's been so long since I've seen it I couldn't tell you if I'd still enjoy it. "Lebowski" was a big bore. Could never understand all the fuss about it. In fact, I never made it through the whole picture. Truly enjoyed "O Brother Where Art Thou," and still do. "I'm the damn paderfamilia!!!" Same goes for "Fargo," although I'm still not sure why McDormand got an Oscar. It was a good performance, to be sure; but was the well that dry that year for other nominees?

I got my copy of Groovadelphia!
Big Al replied to Dan Gould's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Woke up this morning and started the day with this CD, track 1. My son walked into the kitchen bobbin' his head and movin' & groovin' to the music. So HE digs the CD too! -
Oh yeah, and he was making so much money (according to him) he was just swimming in it. Sad thing is, he did so much better than the human investors.

Yeah, those assholes gave television dolphins a bad name... I saw one of those dolphins trying to sell real estate on the local cable access channel. Talk about living up to your name....

Does your box include the Bird and Diz studio session with Monk? I grew up with that one and have never got over it! I'm pretty sure it does. I also dig that session, not the least of the reasons being the presence of Buddy Rich. I know, I know, he supposedly is not a good fit on that session. I disagree; IMOSHO, he actually supercharges the proceedings.

You're catching on.

Then you're in for a treat. The song that follows Danco is my personal all-around favorite from this disc, and I think you'll really dig Jim's Rhodes improv which closes the session. OH yes!!! I have gotten to that one a few times and it is wonderful. Forgot to mention that in my initial review, but I love that trio of songs. It's almost like a suite (sweet!) unto itself. Heading for bed, gonna let "Traces" be my soundtrack into dreamland tonight..... -

Big Al replied to Dan Gould's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I have to admit I haven't gotten to the last four songs yet because I keep playing "Traces" and "Danco de Alma" over and over. Jim, your all-around keyboard (B3, synth, etc*) playing on these two tracks in particular is so beautiful it just creates a wonderfully melancholy atmosphere. As far as effect goes, I'd put it right up there with Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance." It really is that good!!! Joe, your acoustic guitar solo would make Jobim and Gilberto proud. Just beautiful. And Randy, your drumming--and that sounds like too insensitive a word to describe what you're doing back there. Just carrying the beat, caressing it, allowing the rest of the music to float around while you anchor the rhythm...... Dammit, I hate it when I get all mushy-gushy like this, but it's been a while since music affected me like this. A fantastic job, guys! *No, I don't know how to play an etc. I might not even recognize one if I did. -
Anyone in the DFW area looking for a cheap car?
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Just thought I should let y'all know I sold the car this weekend. Unfortunately, I had to KEEP the Chicago cassette in order to sell it. -
Do the Rangers hold the lead in this, or does another team have a worse run differential than the Rangers? I'm being serious. KC is at -115 and Seattle is at -129. San Fran, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Washington are over -100 in the NL. That's nice to know..... I think..... GO CUBS!!!!

Or you could blame that "Rich Dad" guy. In his first book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" he proudly explains how he would "flip" houses to build his wealth. IIRC, he was unconcerned about who owned the house he'd sold, as long as he got his funding, that was all he was concerned with. That attitude is running epidemic in the real estate market right now.
-
Actually, if you want to blame ANYONE in this whole fiasco, blame the goddamned so-called "flippers." You know: investors who buy a house dirt-cheap, fix it up a little, and then sell it at a profit back to a realtor, who sees the opportunity for more commission and sells the house to someone with no/horrible credit history at a low-interest rate mortgage, who then defaults on the mortgage. The house next to us is a case in point. In this case, the owners were involved in a nasty divorce. They both moved out, the husband was trying to sell it and finally sold out to an investment firm who thought they would have an easy sell. Well, the house is now listed at $3,000 below market value. Additionally, I have to call the realtor to call the owners to get them to mow the lawn, which looks like a jungle. These investment assholes got us into this mess, and now my neighborhood is having to suffer.

You're not alone in this. Some friends of ours have been trying to sell their house for the last few months with no takers. They found a house they liked and they "qualified" for the mortgage. The quote marks are there because even our friends were surprised they qualified! If I'm not mistaken, they even got a decent interest rate. So now, they have two mortgages: the one on the old house and now the new house. Obviously I'm not privy to their income status, but carrying two mortgages like that for any kind of middle-class family is a potential back-breaker. It leaves me & my wife to wonder what happens if/when they can't make one of the mortgage payments? I guess the answer is, based on the events of this week, don't worry about it. Think I'll go looking for a house now....
-
Dan, I'm not sure I understand your point when you say "A run differential of 158." Does that mean the Red Sox score 158 MORE runs than the opposition or LESS? If it's less, then I see your point. If it's more, then it would seem to me that this year may be one of those years where no matter how good the Sox are, the Rays might be better.
-
Well, yeah.... maybe the case could be made. And Hans, what makes you think the 16th century wars would be any different than the ones waged today (besides the obvious advances in technology and weaponry)? What is it about Thursdays that gets me so feisty?

Checked out AYE and Ladyland from the library this past weekend and was reminded how much I enjoyed these albums at one time, and wondered why the heck I ever lost interest in them. Now it seems like I'm enjoying them even more than I did back when I first heard these albums (1988). Gotta go get my own copies now, along with the woefully underrated Axis: Bold as Love. Any opinions on First Rays of the New Rising Sun? That's got a lot of my favorite Hendrix tunes on it: "Angel," "Dolly Dagger," and "Room Full of Mirrors" among others.

I heard it was withdrawn because of its controversial title. It is being reissued as 'Creation'. (the same smilie goes for your signature line as well)

Can't really agree or disagree with that, not knowing anything about modes & scales, but I always felt the Allmans were more listenable than everyone else in their attempts at "modality." i.e. I can listen to the whole hour of "Whipping Post/Mountain Jam" from Fillmore and never lose interest; can't say the same thing about anything by the Dead (assuming the two are even comparable in this case).

Dan's like most Red Sox fans: they're completely dissatisfied unless the Sox go 162-0. And even then, they'll still bitch. It's what Red Sox fans do.

End of an Ear? Just saw it sittin' in the rack there on Tuesday night. Not to derail the thread, but this is the first I've ever heard of End of an Ear. Got another destination for my next trip to Austin! I thank you, and my wallet hates you.

This definitely falls in the category called "If you like A, then you'll like B" because the Parlan sessions with the Turrentine brothers are worth the price of admission alone!
-
Yup, these get my vote as well. Just about any of the sides he did with Max Roach are at the top for me.

Stand by for a long-term shift to lower valuations worldwide. I suspect it won't significantly recover for a fair old while and nowhere will be immune IMO. The imploding of 100% mortgages on houses (not to mention 40 year repayment periods, never mind 25) were a time-bomb just waiting to happen. I expect we'll be back to something like the old prudent system of 3 to 3.5 times employer certified income on max. mortgages for the longer term. No more 'liar loans' And not before time either ! I'd like to think that. Unfortunately, last night while listening to the news, y'wanna guess what the first commercial I heard right after the announcement of all of these financial woes was? That's right: "NO CREDIT? NO PROBLEM! INTEREST RATES ARE AT THEIR LOWEST EVER! WE'LL GET YOU INTO THE HOME YOU DESERVE!" There, in a nutshell, is the cause of this whole mess: an inherent attitude of "the world owes me a living" and not learning the lessons even in the middle of being taught such lessons!!!!! This goes WAAAAAY beyond partisan politics, although a lot of that is involved as well.
