  1. I know it's only RealPlayer, and the artist descriptions are generally useless, but every now and then you get a gem like this one, describing Charles Earland: "Recreating walking basslines with his organ peddles, Earland's music is gritty, soulful and funky." A surreally humorous way to start a Friday....
  2. Great, IMHO! Can I at least have the answers? I really wanna know about tracks 5, 6, 10, & 12!
  3. I love MOON RAPPIN', and I don't see any similarities. YMMV, tho.
  4. Vinyl! Vinyl! I love vinyl! Gimme vinyl! Will they come with record jackets & sleeves?
  5. I only have the domestic RVG of this title, and I've never cared for the mastering on it. I've been looking for a TOCJ of this for quite some time, not knowing if there ever was one to begin with. Does anyone know if this is a different mastering than the original TOCJ? At this price, I'm very tempted to just say "heck with it" and buy it anyway. Speak No Evil was released in the Toshiba "Blue Note Works" series on April 26, 1995: TOCJ-4194. Thanks, Hans. I've also e-mailed my questions to Hiroshi (other questions including this one). Looking forward to his reply.
  6. Alright, let me see if I've got this straight: Japanese re-issues of US RVGs or actual Japanese masterings (like the old TOCJ series)? Re-packaged OJC's or actual Japanese re-masterings?
  7. :tup :tup
  8. Have you heard it? If AMG is to be believed, this sounds like it's right up there (or down there) with Elegant Soul. I hope it's better than that! I have an LP burn of that, I enjoy it...like all of Reuben's Blue Note dates...take that as either a recommendation or a condemnation depending on what you think of my taste. If it's like BLUE MODE, bring it on baby!!!!! If it's like LOVE BUG, that'll be cool! If it's funky, good enough for me. If it's a radical departure, thanks but no....... Well, I listened to it via Rhapsody. Sad to say, it's none of the above. It's just..... there. Don't think I'll be getting this one.

  10. Well, thanks to Hurricane Gustav the temp the last couple of days has been in the 80's. Supposed to be low-mid 90's this weekend, cooling down at night. Hopefully no humidity, too. Perfect September baseball weather, IMO.
  11. I just can't get into this album. Maybe it's because I have the attention span of a flea, but these songs just go on too long for me and never really get all that interesting.

Flexing some "google fu" into this. WACKO CONSPIRACY THEORY ALERT: I think Cosby had Ruiz killed in New Orleans cuz Hilton kept demanding that their album be presented in a more collaborative manner: i.e. both he and Cos produced, arranged, played, and (in the case of the originals) composed. When Hilton wouldn't back off, he was eliminated. Why else would the CD only be available on the Cos's website? Does any jazzer (or anyone) write with that kind of false praise like the quote above? Notice the case has gone cold? Nothing better to do on a beautiful Thursday afternoon with the mind racing.....

From The Cosby Treasures website, where you can purchase the disc: Read into that whatever you will. My take is that this was literally ghost-written after the fact and Ruiz' name is stamped on there. I could be wrong.
  14. We scored one run last night against the Mariners. Granted, we won, but ONE RUN!!!! I don't think you have too much to worry about, Dan. Remember: it was in Boston that the Rangers season officially tanked. I'm sure there are some guys on the Rangers who would like to exact some revenge, but as last night proved, the bats are dead and there's no sign of life. Why should there be? Yeah, the last two games have featured some solid pitching, but it's against the Mariners fercryinoutloud! These same Mariners, who handed what remains of the Rangers' dignity to them on a paper plate Tuesday night when they tore apart the Rangers bullpen and turned a 6-4 deficit into a 12-6 laugher. Like I said, Dan: no worries at all. Heck, I may even try to get out to Friday's game, since high-school football is in full swing around here and, football being a major religion around here, there ought to be plenty of cheap seats available.
  15. "thoroughgoing"??? Who the hell uses that word, besides critics grasping at credibility?
  16. Jazz wouldn't be nearly as happy, funny, or funky if Horace Silver had never walked the planet. Happy birthday and here's hoping for at least one more for the road.
  17. GO CUBS!!!
  18. Shoulda never got rid of Fran...... UT 52, Florida Atlantic 10. Whose idea was it to match up these two?
  19. Good heavens, did I scare everyone off???
  20. That thread was also started by tranemonk...
  21. Of course, I posted the above before I opened the paper to find that the Rangers bullpen woes continued last night, as they gave up five runs in the eighth to lose the opener against the Angels. Unbelievable!
  22. CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! HOLY COOOOWWWW!!!!
  23. "Stardust" on Johnny Hodges with Billy Strayhorn and THE Orchestra Clark Terry's self-titled Emarcy album The opening notes of Jobim's "Desafinado" from The Composer of Desafinado Plays And that's just the tip. What wonderful playing he did bestow upon us. Thanks Jimmy. RIP.
