  1. When was the other one? In any event, this is truly a heartwarming and inspiration story. I'd forgotten about his bout with cancer (hey Dan, remember that asshole who polluted this Board when Lester was diagnosed? I'd love to offer that fuckhead a great big FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE!!!!). The mob on the mound was a sweet sight! I'd forgotten about him with his "chemo unit in the clubhouse" crap. Heck, I'd also forgotten that he figured the collapse of 2006 would send the Sox into the toilet for a few more years instead of winning another WS the very next year. Who was that?? Edit Heatwave. What a troll. Here's one of his Greatest Hits: Bad front office - that went after Dice-K because they knew they needed him. That drafted and signed Clay Buchholz, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Jon Lester - who as a group could see two no-hitters and two RoY awards in successive seasons. And then of course there is this: That'll do, I think!

  3. Anyone else dig how the ensemble plays "Wade in the Water" behind Stanley T on "Return of the Prodigal Son"? Way cool!!!
  4. Astros have won 11 of their last 13 games, and Berkman leads the majors in HRs at the moment. I think ESPN this a.m. said Berkman's hitting .556 during his current 14 game hitting streak. After being down 6-0 last night to the Giants, the Astros came back to tie the game off an Erstad pinch hit HR in the 8th, then in the 9th Berkman hit the game winning HR into McCovey Cove. I don't think the Astros are a complete team this season by any means, but Berkman certainly deserves some props for what he's doing. Oughta be an interesting series this weekend: two teams that are doing pretty well right now squaring off in another round of the Texas Shootout. I'm going to Sunday's game!
  5. If you're expecting Hutch to swing, you will be severely disappointed. May be of interest to the hardcore Hutch collector, but it's a bore for me as it sounds more like classical music than anything else. The whole time I was listening, I kept hearing "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." Heck, even the cover photo seems to be saying "Turn this stuff OFF!!!"
  6. NOT inessential! NOT a luxury item! You MUST own a copy of this album! TWO, in case you lose one! Because I said so, that's why!
  7. What about Keep That Groove Goin'? What about Earland's Intensity? What about Power of Soul? What about Mogie's Cornbread? What about.....
  8. Especially since you duplicated the first sixteen!
  9. Jim, those tributes from you and your sister were very heartwarming. Thank you for sharing them. Your dad sounds like an extremely wise and inspirational man. I can only hope that I'm passing on that kind of legacy to my own son. Thanks also to Larry for posting the link to Jim's dad's blog.
  10. Wow, talk about being WAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of its time.......
  11. Good Lord, if I acted like that every time the Rangers lost (like today, f'rinstance), I'd be dead of ulcers by now! Hey Dan and all you Red Sox fans: wait until your team is as bad as mine before you start calling them an "awful fucking team." Geez, at least you guys are above .500, have a couple of WS Rings in the last couple of years, decent pitching, decent hitting..... you know, all the things us Rangers fans wish our team had.......
  12. According to Borders online inventory, the only Conns to be found in the chain's Texas stores are in a couple stores in the Houston area. The rest of us (D/FW, Austin, San Antonio, etc.) are S.O.L. If only Forever Young would take these 40%-off coupons!
  13. The Max Roach Memorial was particularly touching; yeah, Schaap went on and on as usual, but he also replayed a large number of interviews done with Max Roach over the years and, in most of those cases, Phil sat back and let Max do all the talking. Max sounded gracious, generous, and happy to be talking with Phil. Still, OTOH, it's hard to let go of how Phil botched the Ellington releases he oversaw (Newport, BBB, Such Sweet Thunder, etc) as well as the Goodman Carnegie Hall mess. Stick to radio, Phil. PLEASE! (I'm curious about which liner notes he proclaimed himself the "world's greatest authority on jazz"...)
  14. You mean AZTEC SWEET! I can has! No no, I meant ain't the Turrentine sweet? I haven't gotten to the sweet SUITE yet!
  15. Ain't it SWEET?
  16. Damn..... reading that was like...... well, like listening to an airing of "Bird Flight." I appreciate the guy's attention to detail, but damn..... do I need to have every strand of my carpet explained to me at length? I need to lie down....
  17. I remember that BFT and picked that CD up for the same reason. I love humming along with the bari part during the head!
  18. My prayers and condolences are with you, my friend.
  19. Perhaps someone should start a "Chuck Nessa Facts" thread, a la the "Chuck Norris Facts" site.
  20. "The Metal" by Tenacious D, by way of Guitar Hero 3. Hard to play along with a song when you're laughing so hard. So now I've been screaming along with it in the car!
  21. LEONARD FEATHER: In my book The Encyclopedia of Chickens, I mentioned the promising talent of a chicken who was tentatively taking his first steps across the road. Since then, I've had the opportunity to work with the chicken and he has matured WAY past the mindless squawking of those who would call themselves the "new thing in chickens" or "avant gizzarde."
  22. Saw 'em on SportsCenter last night. Unreal!!!!
  23. "Deppenschmidt." Very cool name!
