I wish I'd had more time to spend at Corner Records last summer. Make no mistake, having Chuck & Skid drag me into Vertigo was a true pleasure, one that I eventually hope to pay off! But next time I'm up there, I'm taking a day and spending it at Corner, where I plan to have a box and a UPS shipping label with me!

Oil's perfect storm may blow over
Big Al replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Traffic around here hasn't declined as a result of higher gas prices, so I can't imagine the demand for gas dropping anytime soon. People are still buying those GD gas-guzzlers, despite their whining about the high gas prices. China and India have growing economies which require oil, so their demand isn't going to drop anytime soon, either. -
Up for air!

7. AEC is not the Art Ensemble of Chicago; it's actually the Art Ensemble of Chuck. Chuck Nessa plays all the instruments. Simultaneously.

Location: Ann Arbor. Hmmm......

Jazzypaul, I got your PM and put the Talking Heads box on hold for ya! Let me know if my PM didn't come through.

Would you like flies with your order?

All PM's replied to, and the list is updated with the holds!

Added a lot of stuff. Post here, and then PM me. I'll answer in the order of posts. Going to bed, talk to y'all in the AM (Texas time)

That's it: time to start some Chuck Nessa Facts! 1. Chuck Nessa didn't start a jazz institution by founding Nessa Records. Chuck Nessa IS a jazz institution for starting Nessa Records. 2. The reason no one's ever heard that Bolden cylinder is because no one has the guts to ask Chuck Nessa where he put it. 3. Kenny G used to play baritone sax until he asked Chuck Nessa to produce one of his records. This not only explains the switch to soprano sax, but also his disjointed embouchure.

Larry, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I suppose that would cause a depression strong enough that would cause a loss of interest in other things that you love. I don't have any advice, but I can tell you that the same feeling has happened to me and it hasn't been the result of anything tragic, any kind of loss, etc. Sometimes, this just happens. You find yourself staring at the collection and thinking, "I have no interest in any of this. I think I'll just dump it." The only thing I've been able to do is just let it slide and stop thinking that I have to listen to music, knowing that at some point I'll be interested in the music again.

Happy Birthday, Chuck! It's truly a joy to have you around here, and always a pleasure to hang out with you and the rest of the Michigan Gang when I'm up there!

When was the other one? In any event, this is truly a heartwarming and inspiration story. I'd forgotten about his bout with cancer (hey Dan, remember that asshole who polluted this Board when Lester was diagnosed? I'd love to offer that fuckhead a great big FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE!!!!). The mob on the mound was a sweet sight! I'd forgotten about him with his "chemo unit in the clubhouse" crap. Heck, I'd also forgotten that he figured the collapse of 2006 would send the Sox into the toilet for a few more years instead of winning another WS the very next year. Who was that?? Edit Heatwave. What a troll. Here's one of his Greatest Hits: Bad front office - that went after Dice-K because they knew they needed him. That drafted and signed Clay Buchholz, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Jon Lester - who as a group could see two no-hitters and two RoY awards in successive seasons. And then of course there is this: That'll do, I think!

Anyone else dig how the ensemble plays "Wade in the Water" behind Stanley T on "Return of the Prodigal Son"? Way cool!!!

Astros have won 11 of their last 13 games, and Berkman leads the majors in HRs at the moment. I think ESPN this a.m. said Berkman's hitting .556 during his current 14 game hitting streak. After being down 6-0 last night to the Giants, the Astros came back to tie the game off an Erstad pinch hit HR in the 8th, then in the 9th Berkman hit the game winning HR into McCovey Cove. I don't think the Astros are a complete team this season by any means, but Berkman certainly deserves some props for what he's doing. Oughta be an interesting series this weekend: two teams that are doing pretty well right now squaring off in another round of the Texas Shootout. I'm going to Sunday's game!

100 INESSENTIAL, but rather enjoyable
Big Al replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
What fun is that? -
If you're expecting Hutch to swing, you will be severely disappointed. May be of interest to the hardcore Hutch collector, but it's a bore for me as it sounds more like classical music than anything else. The whole time I was listening, I kept hearing "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." Heck, even the cover photo seems to be saying "Turn this stuff OFF!!!"

NOT inessential! NOT a luxury item! You MUST own a copy of this album! TWO, in case you lose one! Because I said so, that's why! -

What about Keep That Groove Goin'? What about Earland's Intensity? What about Power of Soul? What about Mogie's Cornbread? What about..... -

My dad passed away today...
Big Al replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Jim, those tributes from you and your sister were very heartwarming. Thank you for sharing them. Your dad sounds like an extremely wise and inspirational man. I can only hope that I'm passing on that kind of legacy to my own son. Thanks also to Larry for posting the link to Jim's dad's blog. -
Wow, talk about being WAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of its time.......

Good Lord, if I acted like that every time the Rangers lost (like today, f'rinstance), I'd be dead of ulcers by now! Hey Dan and all you Red Sox fans: wait until your team is as bad as mine before you start calling them an "awful fucking team." Geez, at least you guys are above .500, have a couple of WS Rings in the last couple of years, decent pitching, decent hitting..... you know, all the things us Rangers fans wish our team had.......
