  1. Skid, you gonna say something or are you still in shock? You've been looking at this thread all morning!
  2. This is far and away my favorite Mobley album. Everything clicks here: Blakey, Kelly, and Chambers making a perfect rhythm section for Mobley to coast, soar, swoop, strut, and a shitload of other cliches to describe his playing. Probably earthy is the one that describes it the best. At ease, too. This album always reminds me of driving around Austin with a couple of friends. When I popped it into the player, one of my friends spoke up and said, "Ah... Hank!"
  3. THE RANGERS ARE AT .500! THE RANGERS ARE AT .500! THE RANGERS ARE AT .500! THE RANGERS ARE AT .500! THE RANGERS ARE AT .500!:party: Hey, gotta enjoy these moments while they last, being as few and far between as they are!
  4. One more thing: I am REALLY digging these extra cuts of "I Have a Good One For You." Each one sounds like a different tune, and the take with the electric piano is sublime!
  5. Bringing this thread back around for two reasons: first and foremost to tell Chuck that it arrived here safely and to thank him profusely! Second because I was listening to "On Purpose," and there was a bit during the duet that opens the track where Lou Levy plays these three chords that not only opened my eyes, but made me sit up and say "Hallelujah!" It's been a LOOOOOONG time since a song, hell ANY piece of music, has inspired me at that level. Naturally, I feel like a complete schmuck for having waited this long to acquire it, and am kicking myself for realizing what I've been missing. I know very little about Warne (will change), and only have one other recording with him on it (that I remember, Bill Evans CROSS CURRENTS. Again, this too will change), but this has been revelatory in ways I'm still trying to comprehend. And I'm only on my first go-round! Lou Levy! Egad, another one I'm drastically behind with. Only heard him on the Stan Getz West Coast sessions, and probably have him on something else in my collection but I've forgotten about. All I know is this is some of the loveliest comping I've ever heard this side of.... well, no one cometothinkofit! Finally, I love the sound of the bass on this album. It definitely has what I feel is a 70's feel to it (and I mean that in a good way, as opposed to the drill-in-a-pickup-and-crank-the-amp-to-eleven that some other recordings of the 70's had). A great record indeed. One of the few that lives up to the hype, IMHO. Thanks again, Chuck!
  6. You're still wrong about Bill Evans.
  7. Not cool. NOT cool! Not cool AT all!!!
  8. It is? I opened the paper today to see that the Rangers gave up two unearned runs and were 0-5 with runners in scoring position, leading to a 5-2 loss. I figured last season was just continuing.
  9. Well, this is what I walked out with: Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk (Rhino remaster) Bobby Hutcherson - STICK UP Miles Davis - ON THE CORNER Miles Davis - JACK JOHNSON Smiths - LOUDER THAN BOMBS I'd planned on getting a bunch of OJCs, but the Concord deal was still a better deal. But getting back to the original post, I had the same feeling when I went in there today to make the purchase. OTOH, I'd gone in there Friday night and was greeted in the music section by a lady who smiled and said, "I see you brought the coupon." She was very helpful. The girl today, just seemed to be..... there, I guess.
  10. I had planned on walking out of there with a bunch of OJCs, but after doing the math, the Concord sale is a better deal. So here's what I got instead: Bobby Hutcherson - STICK-UP Miles Davis - ON THE CORNER Miles Davis - JACK JOHNSON
  11. Another blow to the wallet: Cry!-Tender - Yusef Lateef Drums Around the World - Philly Joe Jones Trombone by Three - JJ Johnson/Kai Winding/Benny Green Appassionado - Joe Pass The Modern Touch - Benny Golson Groovin with Golson - Benny Golson Gone with Golson - Benny Golson All Too Soon - Milt Jackson/Joe Pass/Ray Brown/Mickey Roker Soulmates - Ben Webster/Joe Zawinul From All Sides - Vince Guaraldi quadrant - Milt Jackson/Joe Pass/Ray Brown/Mickey Roker Duke with a Difference - Clark Terry Serenade to a Bus Seat - Clark Terry Dizzy's Big 4 - Dizzy Gillespie
  12. Oddly enough, the local B&N is moving to an even bigger facility inside a mall. At least, they SAY it's going to be bigger; I walked past that space the other night and I don't believe them. I guess getting rid of the music dept. will get rid of space that's not being used. Hell, their CDs have always been so overpriced it's a wonder they ever sold any CDs to begin with.
  13. That's why I only do business thru the Organissimo Board: 100% positive for the buyers and sellers I've dealt with!
  14. Hmmm.... maybe I should spin it a few more times...... But don't let that stop any of y'all from buying it! Thanks for the props, dude!
  15. That wouldn't be surprising. However, it seems like this is the only RVG to have that error: all the other RVGs from this batch have the full logo on them.
  16. I had planned on telling y'all about this coupon once I got back from B&N. Not that there's much of a jazz section at the local B&N, but they do have a few gems left. I hope they're still there tonight.
  17. Prompt payment, easy to deal with, will gladly sell to again! A+++++++++++++++ Thanks for the props!
  18. I bet Avery quits after this year. Watching him coach tonight, he looks very apathetic, just standing there emotion-less. I guess arguing with Cuban is taking its toll. Hard to believe the Mavs were up by almost 20 early in the 2nd quarter. Now they're down by 14 with 7 minutes left and Kidd just rimmed another free throw. This is just sad.
  19. THANK YOU!!! Seems like there was a thread about this a long time ago, and I never could find it. Bookmarking that site NOW!
  20. Hell, it's a lot more than their ancestry that shows how similar this bunch is.
  21. Aw, but it's fun arguing with clem.....
  22. If someone is depending on NPR for what to listen to for jazz, then they're not even trying; hell, they're even more clueless than I am. Proof? Someone I know, who is an avid NPR listener, told me some years back about the latest (at the time) jazz CD by Boz Scaggs. Boz Scaggs=jazz??? WTF???? It's the same mentality that led one young person told me, "Oh, you like jazz, too? So does my mom. She has a couple of Kenny G CDs." Yer preachin' to the choir here. I take anything NPR says with less than a grain of salt. Like Sangrey said, like I've always said: this place is a musical wasteland, Austin notwithstanding as long as the suburbs keep their distance, and even those days are numbered as long as Perry is still in charge. Why the hell defend it? At least Sangrey is still somewhat optimistic, which is a helluva lot more than I can say for me.
  23. I wish that were my case; I'd like to be completely unfamiliar with these songs so I could enjoy 'em on that level. Unfortunately, I know 'em well (not necessarily saying I like them), and the idea of someone like Desmond, who I perceive to be a very hip and cool person, playing what is IMO whiny-weenie-folk-masquerading-as-intellectualism-in-the-vain-attempt-at-getting-laid, which is the exact OPPOSITE of Desmond (the man, the myth, the guy who could get laid at the drop of a hat and a sly smile) seems so incongruous. Like Tony Bennett singing the Beatles. Didn't mean to go off on a tangent over a $2 album.
