Don't apologize- this is a good topic, and it seems it's been buried too long! Wow, time flies. Anyway, hopefully somebody checks out Vince as a result (again, I hope).

Griffin / Davis, especially the Minton's recordings, but really just about everything they did together. There are a number of other pairings that I enjoy, but for me none comes close to the excitement, the chemistry, and the sound that Griffin and Davis had to offer.

"Kenny G Dispels Supergroup Rumor, the supergroup to end all supergroups!"... So... he wasn't planning to overdub himself onto the Massey Hall recording? Oh god... I didn't just say that.

I hadn't planned on a prize, so on such short notice this was the best I could do... Damn... Mendelssohn was my second guess (after Brahms), and I Googled and YouTubed the shit out of them. "Mendelssohn's Spring Song" only brought up 3 videos, so apparently this piece just isn't that hip. Okay, now, your moment of Thanks FFA, now I know who to bug next time this happens.

This question was posted over at AAJ, and though I'm not really a classical music enthusiast, it's gotten me very curious. Here is the question, as posed at the other board: "this is a clean clip of a 1959 Phil Woods/Clark Terry session, on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUrLH1JQtv4 at exactly 1:09 into the tape, Clark Terry quotes, with a few notes of classical/cartoon music. Will someone please help me identify the tune he's quoting ?" I recognize the theme (just about anybody would, I'd say), very familiar... no doubt used in cartoons and such... but despite Google and YouTube, I can't figure it out. Help? Btw, it's worth it just to hear this band playing Ornithology. TIA

Yeah, and he kept on going way beyond that (after I'd stopped watching). After reviewing this list, it looks like there were about 9 tv shows he never appeared on. RIP.

I thought I had mentioned it here, but I see that I never got around to it. Here's my question: In terms of engineering feats that inspire wonder and awe, does the Statue of Liberty (with all due respect to her) come anywhere close... even if we just focus on the United States? Or even just New York?? I mean, seriously...

I rarely hear music emanating from any houses in this area. Cars, yes, and it's typically the rap/hip-hop stuff with the bass you can FEEL from 300 yards away. When I do hear music coming from a home, it's usually the same thing, or some type of hard rock designed to threaten the eardrums. Jazz people generally don't play it loud, from the house or the car. I know I don't. It would be nice to pick up the strains of Chet Baker coming from somebody's window, though. I'm sure those people are scattered around here (in relatively small numbers), they just tend not to stand out.

Maybe it was later, but (the Great ) Mike Douglas had Zappa (and Lennon, and Chuck Berry, and other cutting edge type people) on his show. It's on YouTube (or at least it was a few months ago).

I remember watching one of Cavett's shows every day at noon on one of our local PBS stations back in the mid-to-late 70's. I distinctly remember being pleasantly surprised to see an extended interview/performance of the MJQ. It seemed like such a rare and cool thing. Carson had jazz artists on of course, but I don't remember them getting much in the way of interview time. Anyway, at the time, I thought the MJQ show might make a serious impression on my folks (who did have some taste, despite being loyal L. Welk fans), who were also watching that day. Alas... no. I've noticed that one of our premium cable channels has been running one hour-long Cavett show, about twice a month. So far I've seen Woody Allen, Robert Mitchum, Catherine Hepburn... and one or two others. The set is different from the show I remember watching, though. I knew Cavett had a few different shows, but I don't have that all sorted out.

Hey, that's not an opinion, that's a fact.

I'm a fan, and there are at least a few others here. We've talked about them on various threads (vibraphone topics, Connoisseur and boxed set wishlists, etc). Too "jazz lite" for some, but I suspect some aren't giving the music much of a chance. Maybe this kind of thing is an acquired taste for a lot of people, which is understandable. Anyway, cool that they have their own thread now. Btw, if you want to hear Wes, Buddy and Monk together, there are a number of recordings by or with The Montgomery Brothers (Pac Jazz, Riverside, Fantasy, Jazzland...).

That's a beautiful album, and deserves to be reissued. ===== Re the Chet Baker ("Baby Breeze"), I like that one also, although as I recall it's less of a chance for Strozier to shine. Haven't spun it in a long while, though...

Isn't that the disc Medjuk is asking about? At any rate, I do NOT trust Lonehill when they claim that ANYTHING they release is "previously unissued". I've literally lost track of how many times they've claimed that and been wrong. I'm not saying that I know they're wrong here, but... I have a Philology CD from the early 1990's titled "Chet In Europe, 1955" (W42 2). Here's the basic data: Recorded September 21, 1955 Chet Baker,Jean Louis Chautemps,Ralph Schecroun,Eddie De Haas,Charles Saudrais, Dick Twardzik,Jimmy Bond,Peter Littman c.t.a.,cheryl,darn that dream, chekeetah, four, exitus ,walkin', indian summer, all the things you are

Do you mean "Always There"? Should have nominated "Almost Good".

I enjoyed the whole "bebop nazi" thing more than the tenor playing. First YouTube argument I've seen where nobody called anybody "gay"... although it could still happen.
