I have a few of their Bossa and Brazilian jazz things, which are quite obscure. They carry a ton of them, but I think they tend not to be the cream of the crop... not even the obscure crop. Anyway, I'm glad they exist, let's put it that way. What really impresses me is their research dept. They really go deep into the artists' histories, and they provide (or at least they used to... haven't looked in quite awhile) extensive liner notes for each recording on the website.
  3. Thanks Mike. So, "On The Trail" does begin with at least some of the theme of "Daybreak"? (marcello seems to contradict that... ). If so, odd that it wasn't listed as a medley. Also odd is the fact that it was only about 36 hours ago, and I've already forgotten what lyrics I heard. I thought I heard the original lyrics to "Daybreak" (with which I'm pretty familiar, thanks to Chet and others), but I could be wrong. Frankly, I'm not as familiar with the history of "On The Trail". I know it as an instrumental only... so maybe the credit to Hendricks was for "On The Trail" lyrics only. At any rate, I'm going to find that album and buy it.
  4. GCS dates to 1931, while "Daybreak" (written with Adamson) dates to 1942. Interesting connection though, with Grofe as well as the theme of GCS, which included "Sunrise".
  5. I need some help with a puzzler. I heard something yesterday on one of the local public-supported FM stations which I haven't been able to sort out. There was a set of tunes that began with the unmistakable voice of Jon Hendricks singing the Grofe/Adamson standard "Daybreak". My memory (not to be trusted) tells me that he then moved into Grofe's "On The Trail", with no break in-between. A two-song medley, as it were. I was out and about in the car when I heard it, and when I got home I checked to see if I had the recording. I don't. So, I googled to see what album it came from, and found that "On The Trail" is listed as a track on the TELL ME THE TRUTH album. I don't see it listed anywhere as a medley, however, and I can't find any reference to a Hendricks recording of "Daybreak". So, does anybody have TELL ME THE TRUTH? If so, was "On The Trail" actually a medley of those two songs?
  6. I've come across dozens (maybe hundreds) of JHR CD's in used bins over the years, and they always had black & white covers. 99% of the time, I already had the real deal, so I never bought one.
  7. The last time I checked you could still buy the booklet from Mosaic for $10. I was wishing that they would have them online like an OOP reference library. You know about this thread, right?
  8. I think we had begun to suspect that. Not a new idea btw, Mike. There have been several Mosaics where the music has/had been issued in near-completeness on other issues.
  9. Tom, where did you get the info? I seem to recall a narrow panel tweed twin in one of the photos on "Up At Minton's".

Thanks, Late. My favorite Blakey group, I think. Gotta pick up that entire DVD.
  11. The Mosaic set includes an album that was on Warner Brothers, "First Place Again". I believe the RCA set includes a non-quartet album not included in the Mosaic set. Mosaics sell for big $ also because of the status/collectability factor (like it or not).

  15. Yeah, that was dumb. At least he hit back rim. I haven't really been following Indy since the trade. Anyway, my "Golden State Pacers" comment was meant in terms of us not quite being one unit yet (especially when two or more of the new guys are on the floor). I get the feeling that all three of the ex-Pacers would rather try to make a play themselves than trust their new teammates. There were a couple of fast breaks where Jasekevicius didn't make the (obvious) correct pass, and tried to take it to the tin himself. Jackson and Harrington have each already had at least one big scoring night, and it seems like Nelson is giving them quite a bit of slack when they're not playing well.
  16. Dear Sirs, Dear loyal customers, Dear Consumer,
  17. They've looked pretty vulnerable lately without Baron. They were really pretty lucky last night, to pull it out with Biedrins and Harrington fouled out at the end. That guy who took the final 3 attempt got an awfully good look. Guy, what do you think of Harrington and Jackson so far? My main concern is that they seem to have too much ego at times at the offensive end (trying to do it all themselves, especially late in the 4th). Sometimes we look like the Golden State Pacers out there, if you know what I mean. Sarunas looked pretty bad last night during his extended minutes. Hopefully that was just an off night for him.

  22. the winchester recording "another opus" liner notes state that his young son accidentally shot lem. Don't think so, unless you have some later LP issue. Am I missing something here? Anybody?
  23. For example, check this out: AAJ thread from 2005 The guy suggests that Lem was a policeman in Wilmington, Maryland, and that the child involved was his nephew.
  24. The OJC CD reproduces Joe Goldberg's original notes, and they were written before Lem died. Bob Weinstock's addendum, written later, does not mention the specifics of the accident, nor Lem's son. Goldberg's notes for "With Feeling" mention the incident, but do not mention Lem's son. I've read stories like this before on bulletin boards, but I've never had anybody respond when I've questioned them about their sources...
