This also eliminates some of the equalization added to the original tapes when they were prepared for LP mastering. In five cases (Moten Swing, Sentimental Journey, Blue Moon, Broadway and Jumpin' At The Woodside) we had to use LP masters because the session tapes no longer exist. There are some drop-outs on Sentimental Journey and one of Julian Dash's tenor notes on Blue Moon had to be dubbed from LP because a piece of the only existing tape had deteriorated. The most frustrating aspect of all this is that we were not able to bring you both unedited takes of Jumpin' At The Woodside, only the bizarre issued take which alternates chunks of the two takes done months apart by two different groups. Also two performances (the alternate takes of Blue Lou and Don't You Miss Your Baby) are taken from a digital master because the original session tapes cannot be found.

Comedian Richard Jeni commits apparent suicide

I had the same reaction. He was a wonderful comedian, right up there among the best during the comedy circuit renaissance of the 80's/90's. Thanks for all the laughs... RIP. -

Okay, have it your way, you're the only one interested. -
I hope Jim is okay. Always a stand-up guy in my experience, went out of his way to be helpful- especially when it came to tech advice, in addition to setting up "the back room". Just out of curiosity, I googled his name and location, and there is a variety of contact info here (though I have no idea how current it is): http://www.tn.regentsdegrees.org/rodpstaff.htm

I'm not a gambler, but I think I want to do this just for the hell of it. Actually, there's a reason... I haven't really enjoyed the @#$%ing tournament for many years. Every time I'm really excited about pulling for a certain team, they fuck up. So, I think I'll pick against all (or most of) the teams I actually want to win, and that way I'm satisfied no matter what (happy I picked correctly if the knuckleheads lose, and happy they advanced even if I picked wrong). I don't know if this makes any sense, I'm just explaining to myself why I'm playing this stupid game (haven't hardly seen anybody play outside of the Pac-10 this year ). So, you want picks for all the rounds before Thursday morning, or just the 1st round picks to begin with? -

Man, that was fun to watch. I was pissed when it was all over early, after we went up by 30. Obviously it's easier to do this with Baron on the floor, but we should be able to be more competetive when he's not available. Considering what we've done in the last 5 games, that Blazer loss really stings. At any rate, our schedule is probably too tough down the stretch now.

I've got that one, too. But it is a compilation. Oh, I know. It's got sentimental value to me, though... one of the first jazz LP's I bought, and... BIG impact (along with the Minton's twofer).
-
I've got ALL the CD's (and bought them all as quickly as I could get my mitts on 'em), but I will never ever let go of these:

The only thing that really appears newsworthy with regard to this thread (we've talked about Wes' european performances before, probably more than once) is this, from Durium's blog: "A few weeks ago the NPS ( Dutch Television) sent out some rare film shots of Dutch jazz programs from the 1960s. One of them was a fragment of Wes Montgomery playing with the Trio Pim Jacobs. This fragment is rather remarkable as Wes and Pim are discussing the chords and melody lines before the start of the program. This film shot seems to be from a concert that was broadcast by the Dutch VARA radio on the 2nd of April 1965 at Studio 7 in Hilversum (The Netherlands)" I'd be interested in hearing more about this (or seeing the clip). Maybe I should have checked YouTube before I posted.

I know what you're saying Noj, and it is kind of weird to think about how many great players from the more recent past and up to the present aren't exactly being celebrated in the same way for their talents, but at the same time I think the list is perfectly valid. You can't compare players from different eras, imo, simply because times change, athletes change, and the game changes. Maybe it would make more sense if they created a list of the X (not sure what would be optimal, but less than 50) greatest players of each decade. I think it's good to celebrate the guys from the earlier eras even if they wouldn't be able to get minutes today, becuase they were great then, and part of the game's history that shouldn't be forgotten.

I really must be getting old, because I remember watching Hal Greer when he was with the Sixers. As kids we used to copy unusual FT styles, and Greer's was a jump shot.

The one on the right.

That's the one. The original 10" had a different cover, which I can't seem to find right now...

There are two versions - including a reprise - of the song in the double CD Sarah Vaughan In the City of Lights (Sunnyside) that was recorded in November 1985 in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. With Frank Collett on piano, Bob Maize on bass and Harold Jones on drums. Thanks for mentioning that one, brownie. I relied only on the 1991 Brown discography, and neglected to check my database, which of course includes that City of Lights recording (mine's on Justin Time, btw). I suppose that version could be turning up on comps too. Ubu, I would say that there is definitely some prime Sarah in the Mosaic set, but there's also a fair amount of forgettable syrup. To me, she was in her prime in those years (early 60's). She had the added experience and hipness, but hadn't yet begun to decline. Imo. Anyway, I know the Mosaic gets a bad rap in some corners thanks to some of the fluffy stuff that she (unfortunately) recorded for Roulette, but some of those Roulette albums (the sessions with the Basie band; Benny Carter [The Explosive Side Of Sarah Vaughan / The Lonely Hours]; Gerald Wilson [sarah Sings Soulfully, with Teddy Edwards, Carmell Jones,Ernie Freeman]; the trio recordings with Kessel, Lowe, Duvivier and Comfort; some of the sides with Quincy Jones; Jimmy Jones... there's actually quite a bit that I'd recommend despite the presence of some orchestral stuff that was poorly produced). For anyone who's not a big Sarah fan, most of the Roulette albums have been released individually over the years, so the Mosaic isn't necessarily the only answer. It's been awhile since I've listened to the Columbia material, but they were never as high on my list for some reason. I may have to go back and relisten.

Strange game for the W's. Granted, they had everybody (?) back, though some not 100% yet, but they actually came out after halftime and continued to play (and more importantly, score). They even kept scoring through the 4th. Weird.

At least that's a small scan. I had the original vinyl, and I could barely stand to look at it (great music, though). It's still hard to believe that the photo was o.k.'d. I remember bringing this up (without the J.B. A/B ) at the BNBB (I think I posted a large scan, though )

Aside from the Tivoli recording, she only recorded it on two other occasions (according to Brown's 1991 discography): "Jazz Jamboree" in Warsaw on October 24, 1975 with Carl Schroeder (p), Bob Magnusson (b), Jimmy Cobb (d). Issues: (P) Pronit SX 0605; and (cassette) "Jazz Greats" SJG 12. "Airmen of Note" broadcast, Washington DC, March 6, 1977 Airmen of Note Orchestra, plus Schroeder, Walter Booker (b), Cobb. No issues listed. I think it's safe to assume that the Tivoli recording is the one turning up on comps. I had it on a JMY (Italy) disc before I got the Mercury boxes.

Hey Al, I decided to translate my birthday message to you into german, then into portuguese, then back into german, and then into english. No, I don't know why. Anyway, here it is: The warmest radix complements, Aluminum! If it does not worry itself around this last email, which I radiated with the connection to the rope of the bird, that to be annoyingly extreme can. Really, if it worries itself not around my enamel to everything (everyone perhaps read different, e could know you the stomach it like nice sambawich). Hope, that its day is completely real and of laffs (Laffing) wunnerful. Take from that whatever you can, I guess. Have a great B-day! (party) (hearty)

What is this, "Name Three Birds"? Nice, Noj. Ever tried to paint birds?
-
Wow... I had forgotten all about those. A familiar sight back in our days of camping and backpacking up and down the west coast. Joe G mentioned the Pileated Woodpecker in that other thread (thanks for that, btw, Joe). I remember the excitement that caused when we saw one (in Yosemite, iirc) while backpacking in the Sierra.
-
Yeah, those would be the females, unless you've got orioles or something down there. (btw, I just googled for an image of a female w.t., and the first link that came up was "Birds of Westwood"... some photos taken on the UCLA campus)

No shit?! Wow, maybe my general ignorance will show here, but I thought those were pretty rare these days. As I said above, it's been years since we've seen one around here. Our family saw one perhaps 20 years ago, and it's practically a legendary event now. Pretty spectacular. I just checked for a range map, and it appears that they are indeed more commonly seen in greater L.A. than here in the Bay Area: Damn it.

Good stuff, mikelz777. With all those feeders, you're not "casual" in the same way that I am. (I'm casual and lazy). Anyway, your mention of feeders reminds me... I think somebody gave us a feeder as a gift, but we haven't gotten around to putting it up. If I remember right, it's one that's designed for liquid... for hummingbirds, I think. Fortunately (and I'm not sure why I didn't mention it), we already have quite a few hummingbirds around here, attracted by a variety of plants. I think those are one of my favorite birds to watch.
