  1. That`s when they lost me!
  2. They are very nice for dancing, but not quite my taste, the drummer is too rockish for me.
  3. Musicians have their own lingo in any language. No matter whether you talk about music, women, or beer. Translating that is often impossible as the general groove is different. For the same reason, most German jazz guys can't play real funky, as their popular music point of reference is rock rather than R & B. The cultural context is very important. Just as difficult as translating poetry. You can't just make a literal transfer.
  4. Asphalt Canyon Suite and Night Song are due out over here on June 16. I pre-ordered both, even though I have them on some external hard drive. As it turns out I rarely play downloaded music.
  5. Finally, I found a copy at an affordable price! There is one track on it that was previously unissued.
  6. My thoughts exactly! German is no jazz lingo. It's simply not hip enough. How would you translate a phrase like "He played his ass off"? Add to this the fact that most professional translators are not jazz fans, with all probability ..... Last year I translated S. Duncan Reid's article on the John Handy - Ali Akbar Khan collaboration into German for Jazz Podium magazine. There were no four letter words in it, but still ....
  7. Remember the story about an unissued Atlantic album and the board member with a copy of the tapes willing to do an issue, but the label wasn't interested? I know from the children of some musician that they never received any royalties from the CD resissues on one label their father recorded for, and were told they weren't interested in reissuing the remaining titles. The majors now owning much classic jazz simply don't care.
  8. https://antonioadolfomusic.com Seems to be a key figure.
  9. There even is a German translation of Castro's book! But I preferred to order the only used copy of the English edition available from amazon.de.
  10. Cocset is really superb. Buy any of his recordings with confidence.
  11. The Bobby Montez theme is "borrowed" from the second part/phrase of Tito Puente's "Philadelphia Mambo". Cal Tjader also recorded that tune. both versions predate Montez'. Pettiford et al might have heard either version. It was a popular track on the Latin Jazz scene. Montez sure is Puente and Tjader influenced, as was probably every Latin vibes player after the two.
  12. Excellently played new recording of excellent, underrated music!
  13. Great painting, great gift.
  14. I'M sure they will. As long as Mosaic has copies, they will get another batch. Send them an e-mail to reserve a copy.
  15. It's very hard to assume who was the link between the LA scene Dave MacKay was part of and the New York scene McFarland was in, who had such such a busy schedule I cannot visualize him taking a plane to California. Lalo Schifrin was active on both coasts, and he knew both Bob Brookmeyer and McFarland. I now think it was Tjader himself who heard of the music called Jequibau in California and met MacKay. Tjader played another MacKay composition, Now, on his Agua Dulce LP from 1971 and a Brazilian tune in 7/4 on his 1973 album with Charlie Byrd. Duncan Reid writes "Tjader enjoyed the music of Dave MacKay". It is more than probable the two musicians knew each other. We better not underestimate Tjader's knowledge of the newest developments.
  16. I'd say Gary McFarland brought the tune to the session - he arranged and produced the album and it is one of the two tracks where McFarland and Tjader play two sets of vibes. He was very much into the newest developments in Brazilian music and may have been in contatc with Dave MacKay. p.s. Checking McFarland's and Tjader's connections etc. I think it is more probable that Tjader knew MacKay and got the tune from him. See my next post.
  17. The Lord disco lists them as from the session that was reissued as a Mosaic Single. --------------------------------------- Charles Lloyd (ts,fl) Gabor Szabo (g) Ron Carter (b) Tony Williams (d) New York, March 8, 1965 Of course, of course Columbia CL2412 Voice in the night - Third floor Richard - Apex (gs out) - One for Joan - She's a woman (*) 4-43290 You know (*) - , CS9609 Note: Columbia CL2412(mono) = CS9212(stereo). All titles from Columbia CL2412 also on CBS (Jap)SONP-50351. All titles, except (*), also on Mosaic MCD-1006 [CD] titled "Charles Lloyd - Of Course, Of Course"; see May 8 & October 15, 1965 for rest of CD; Mosaic incorrectly lists recording date for this session as March 8, 1964. Charles Lloyd (ts,fl) Gabor Szabo (g) Ron Carter (b) Tony Williams (d) New York, May 8, 1965 The song my lady sings Columbia CL2412 The best thing for you - The things we did last summer (rc,tw out) - Goin' to Memphis - East of the sun Columbia CS9609 Note: Columbia CS9609 titled "Nirvana". Columbia CL2412(mono) = Columbia CS9212(stereo). All titles from Columbia CL2412 also on CBS (Jap)SONP-50351. All above titles also on Mosaic MCD-1006 [CD]. Nirvana : Charles Lloyd Quintet : Charles Lloyd (ts) Gabor Szabo (g) Robbie Robertson (g-1) Albert Stinson (b) Pete LaRoca (d) New York, October 15, 1965 Island blues (*) Columbia CS9609 Carcara - Long time baby - Love theme from "In harm's way" - Sun dance (1,*) - Note: For 4 more titles from Columbia CS9609 see May 8, 1964 & March 8, 1965 and Chico Hamilton, February 19, 1962. (*) These 2 titles also on Mosaic MCD-1006 [CD]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Several Mosaic Singles CDs icluded bonus tracks belonging to the sessions involved, that's what puzzles me. The Farmer and the Ellington Newpott 1958 were special as the kind of re-configured the whole album with unissued material. But maybe they found new information on the Lloyd sessions - see the notes to the sessions quoted from Lord. Or they overlooked the single, or Cuscuna didn't like it ..... many possibilities. Even Mosaic may miss a track.
  18. So why did the Mosaic reissue not include this track? Nor its B-side.
