  1. How old is your SACD player, and when was the SACD made? I have two SACD players, and some of the newly manufactured discs are not recognized by the older player. My Hi-Fi dealer told me there is no player on the market that is guaranteed to play any CD. OTOH the older player plays some old discs the newer one rejects. Oh well ...
  2. I, too, received the "wrong" version at first, e-mailed Terri Hinte at Fantasy and was sent a replacement with the correct bonus track - she apologized for the mistake. At the same time they issued a Mongo Santamaria twofer CD with two tracks missing. In other words, they corrected the issue.
  3. My pre-ordered copy is due in mid-December, amazon.de says.

    Art Tatum

These are the four tracks recorded for RCA Victor: Art Tatum (p) solo - New York, January 20, 1947 D7-VB-74 Smoke gets in your eyes D7-VB-75 Ain't misbehavin' D7-VB-76 Out of nowhere D7-VB-77 Cherokee
  5. The general lack of this sensitivity and lightness is what drove me away from rock music.
  6. So I was right to order my copy as soon as it went running low/last chance - phew. I would have kicked myself for missing it.
  7. Yes!
  8. That's a nice album ... The four tracks with Clark Terry were added as bonus tracks to the Verve Elite Edition CD of an EmArcy LP - indeed good music! Some of the tracks were in the Forty Years of Women in Jazz Box set on Stash or the two CD version on Jass:
  9. That's good news - I skipped the Wounded Bird CDs as I have all the Don Ellis Columbia LPs. Will get the BGO CDs soon.
  10. Ordered a copy of the Lost Tapes Vol.2 last night after reading your question. It's great they get that stuff in circulation, and that BGO reissued some Columbia albums - the Wounded Bird reissues gor for big money, at least when I look for them. Plus, I have all the LPs.
  11. First track that comes to my mind is "Kansas City Blues", one of the live tracks from the "Autumn" album - that starts with a long solo by Frank Strozier. Would have to dig in deeper to find others ...
  12. I already had both, first on LP,then on CD, and bought this only for the bonus track, a previousl< unreleased version of the Beatles' "Yesterday", which I always wnated to hear. It was worth the investment.
  13. Something like that ...
  14. Discs 7-9 today and tomorrow-
  15. My thoughts exactly!
  16. My fault, I quoted from memory as I was too lazy to get up and pull the box from the shelf ...
  17. Well, it arguably is one of his best albums, to me his most characteristic, as far as his own playing is concerned. Now how many alternates are on the second disc that are not on the SACD reissue .....
  18. In the interview with Kenny Washington that's in the booklet for the box Jamal says it stayed on the charts for 109 weeks! Must be the jazz album longevity record.
  19. Mine arrived last week . # 2476. I wonder how many copies were really made. I am missing a note at the end of the booklet about the arrangement of the music over the discs: If I am not mistaken, they kept LP sequence in most cases and separated live and studio sessions. The three CDs that Orrin Keepnews compiled for reissue are closer to performance sequence, which is quite as covincing. although I respect that Ahmad Jamal conceived the sequencing of at least part of the LPs. I will keep the three CDs previously avaialable, they sound better in my ears, one session sounds rather muffled, which of course is due to the sources available. Keepnews might have had better tape sources. Cuscuna notes that the first LP with Walter Perkins was from a digital source which was an LP dub - my LP sounds a lot better and has no wow and flutter - seems I was lucky when I bought that at Crocodisc in Paris 40 years ago ... What really surprised me the most was how much they were swinging - Crosby and Fournier were one of the all-time great bass-drums teams!
  20. Still working my way through the Jamal box - these guys were swinging!
  21. The Milestone box set obviously has the shortened versions, as they add up to around 45 minutes. Looking at the releases on discogs, only the Japanese Victor LP SMJX-10123 seems to have the unedited tracks. So Keepnews overlooked this when preparing the box set.
  22. Another H.B. from Germany!
