(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?
mikeweil replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
It's a CD well worth having. They were an excellent quartet. -
Since nobody opened this annual thread so far, I thought I'd post this link to an overview by the Jazz Journalists Association: http://news.jazzjournalists.org/2019/01/final-bars-of-2018/ As always, too many ....

The Disconnected Works 1980-2018
mikeweil replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Got mine but will not have time to post the Percy France tracks before the weekend. This will take me some time to dig in, but it is a treasure trove, that's for sure. Doc Cheatham side by side with Julius Hemphill, just to name a pairing on disc one - ideal working ground for musicians that hate to be pigeonholed. -

Camille Bertault e Nelson Faria - Giant Steps
mikeweil replied to mjzee's topic in Miscellaneous Music
She does it the right/hard way by memorizing boppish solos and even setting lyrics to them - she will be the next scat and vocalese giant. On her facebook page she regularly posts videos of her singing, one has her singing along with a very complex Hermeto Pascoal solo. Check out her albums (I have yet to get the second): http://www.sunnysiderecords.com/artist.php?id=535&Bertault&Camille She also has a track on a vocalists' Bird tribute: https://www.camillebertault.fr/ -
What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
mikeweil replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
His abilities as a composer were on the same level of excellence as his competence as a chess player. He just wasn't performed beacuse he was classified an amateur due to his great reputation as chess expert. Whoever actually played his music was impressed. Not to be confused with Francois André Philidor. -

Thanks for your elaborate response. Could it be the tapes of the Vault label are lost or destroyed? I see unissued recordings in the Lord Disco. -

Got a box with ten bargain priced CDs from JPC today, all early music. This is the first I opened: I have other recordings of these pieces, but Mme Dévérité plays very well and the sound is great. -

I just cancelled my order of "The Jazz Organs" after reading your post. The same label reissued Wilson's "Brazilian Mancini" - did they mess it up, too? Another needle drop, I suppose? -
Coltrane '58: The Prestige Recordings
mikeweil replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm with you here - I linked this listing only to give some examples for others who are not so familiar with the label's history. The problem with discogs is that they have no personnel supervising the listings, it is the decision of each member posting a release to classify it as a new version of an existing release or an independent issue - if they are not discographically inclined and check other entries such duplicate/triplicate etc. listings are bound to happen. That said, the issue/reissue policy of Prestige was just another mess, in some respects. It seems that every generation of reissue compilers did not give a damn what had been done before them and never did any serious research. After the publication of Ruppli/Porter's label discography it was easy, although even that is not without mistakes and omissions, but I doubt that the label executives had a copy at hand.
