  1. First track that comes to my mind is "Kansas City Blues", one of the live tracks from the "Autumn" album - that starts with a long solo by Frank Strozier. Would have to dig in deeper to find others ...
  2. I already had both, first on LP,then on CD, and bought this only for the bonus track, a previousl< unreleased version of the Beatles' "Yesterday", which I always wnated to hear. It was worth the investment.
  3. Something like that ...
  4. Discs 7-9 today and tomorrow-
  5. My thoughts exactly!
  6. My fault, I quoted from memory as I was too lazy to get up and pull the box from the shelf ...
  7. Well, it arguably is one of his best albums, to me his most characteristic, as far as his own playing is concerned. Now how many alternates are on the second disc that are not on the SACD reissue .....
  8. In the interview with Kenny Washington that's in the booklet for the box Jamal says it stayed on the charts for 109 weeks! Must be the jazz album longevity record.
  9. Mine arrived last week . # 2476. I wonder how many copies were really made. I am missing a note at the end of the booklet about the arrangement of the music over the discs: If I am not mistaken, they kept LP sequence in most cases and separated live and studio sessions. The three CDs that Orrin Keepnews compiled for reissue are closer to performance sequence, which is quite as covincing. although I respect that Ahmad Jamal conceived the sequencing of at least part of the LPs. I will keep the three CDs previously avaialable, they sound better in my ears, one session sounds rather muffled, which of course is due to the sources available. Keepnews might have had better tape sources. Cuscuna notes that the first LP with Walter Perkins was from a digital source which was an LP dub - my LP sounds a lot better and has no wow and flutter - seems I was lucky when I bought that at Crocodisc in Paris 40 years ago ... What really surprised me the most was how much they were swinging - Crosby and Fournier were one of the all-time great bass-drums teams!
  10. Still working my way through the Jamal box - these guys were swinging!
  11. The Milestone box set obviously has the shortened versions, as they add up to around 45 minutes. Looking at the releases on discogs, only the Japanese Victor LP SMJX-10123 seems to have the unedited tracks. So Keepnews overlooked this when preparing the box set.
  12. Another H.B. from Germany!
  13. Lord also lists this here: In Concert : Joe Henderson And Kikuchi Hino : Terumasa Hino (tp) Kohsuke Mine (sop,as) Joe Henderson (ts) Masabumi Kikuchi (p,el-p) Yoshio "Chin" Suzuki (b) Hiroshi Murakami, Yoshiyuki Nakamura (d) Live "Tokyo Toshi Center Hall", Tokyo, Japan, August 5, 1971 Sunrise in Tokyo Fontana (Jap)PAT1064, Philips (Jap)FX-8520 So what - - Get magic again - - Note: All above titles also on Jazz Door 12120 [CD] titled "Sunrise in Tokyo". All above titles also on Philips (Jap)PHCE-4128 [CD] titled "Joe Henderson And Kikuchi Hino In Concert".
  14. Here's what the Lord disco says: Henderson's Habiliment : Joe Henderson Quartet : Joe Henderson (ts) Hideo Ichikawa (el-p) Kunimitsu Inaba (b) Motohiko Hino (d) Live "Junk Club", Tokyo, Japan, August 4, 1971 'Round midnight (1) World (Jap)SMJX-10123, Milestone MSP9047 Black narcissus [Out'n in] - - Blue bossa (1) - - Junk blues (1) - - Note: "Black Narcissus" as "Out 'n in" (a retitling of "In 'n out") on Milestone, OJC releases. Milestone MSP9047 titled "Joe Henderson in Japan"; titles (1) are all edited on this release. This followed a pattern that the U.S. version aimed at keeping closer towards the usual 40 to 45 minutes per disk format of U.S. LPs, while the Japanese Victor release runs over 51 minutes long. All above titles also on OJC CD1040-2 [CD], Milestone 8MCD-4413-2 [CD].
  15. Excellent brandnew recording!
  16. Martinon really felt this music, IMO ... Just finished this here:
  17. On discogs they say this album was reissued twice.
  18. Yes, judging from the tracklist: https://www.discogs.com/Alberto-Naranjo-Alberto-Naranjo-Y-Su-Trabuco-Imagen-Latina/release/9336720
  19. One of the best Latin albums I ever heard! But rare - had to order it from Venezuela ...
  20. This was brought to me at 9.00 am this morning. Was picked up by TNT Express in Barcelona yesterday in the afternoon. Glad to finally have it here. I will keep my LP of the original "Count Em 88" LP for sure as it is in very good condition and sounds much better than the LP dub they had to use for the box set. This is an iconic body of work in the history of jazz piano trio!

    New Monk

Seems like a batch of excellent Monk to add to one's collection.
  22. I think the Fort Apache Band was living proof that you could fuse the jazz stylistics of the 1960's Miles Davis Quintet with Cuban music - they limited themselves mostly to rumba, because that gave them an open improvisatory frame that other rhythms will not allow you to the same degree. But I think Jerry Gonzalez' greatest album was his first, a true Latin Jazz masterpiece:
