  1. What was his response? Most likely ...
  2. ... and some tracks do not seem to be original Mercer recordings. Mercer LP 1002 is compiled of three Eddie Shu tracks possibly done for Vogue, but recorded in New York; three Joe Roland tracks that later appeared on Savoy; and two Wild Bill Davis tracks, one with the Duke on piano. Only the latter are clearly Mercer recordings. Roland played with Pettiford and thus had a connetion to the label; don't know about Shu. The master numbers of the Shu and Roland tracks do not fit into the Mercer master numbers scheme. A thread about Mercer Records seems appropriate.
  3. Here's a list (mostly 78's) for starters. http://www.globaldogproductions.info/m/mercer.html
  4. On the day of recording, Staier was on a "I can play that piece faster than everybody else" kick for some tracks - the Soler Fandango in particular. Other tracks are just great.
  5. It can be too much of a good thing. For the analytical listener it can be interesting to follow the development or perfectioning of a take. In the recently issued Nat King Cole box set there is a bonus disc with numerous takes of a pop song, "Thank You Pretty Baby" - they mainly tried out different patterns for the rhythm guitars - I have the greatest respect for Cole because his vocals are impeccable in every take. But I doubt that I will ever listen to all these takes again.
  6. I think Mosaic's solution to put the alternates at the end of each disc is the best - you can move on to the next disc or keep on listening. There are alternates with minor differences to the masters, and others with totally different solos, which of course are the ones that really catch your attention. I see your point - I had the two French LP box sets with Basie's complete Columbia output but decided to sell it as it was cumbersome to skip up to four alternates.
  7. All that said, a Mosaic box of the Complete Original Mercer Recordings would be great. I have a lot of it but would buy or it at once, or pre-order, if necessary.
  8. Medea Bindewald's excellent performance on Saturday afternoon inspired to listen to recordings of some of the composers' music that she featured:
  9. Enjoyed a great solo harpsichord recital by Medea Bindewald - Scarlatti-Fever. We had seats in the first row enabling us to watch her hands which was great, lots of crossing hands and other technical extravaganza.
  10. This afternoon, while on the way to a Scarlatti haprsichord recital by another artist:
  11. They improved a bit, but IMO Löw is too conservative and reluctant in his approach. He should have opted for more younger energetic players before the World Championship. After being the champion, things are bound to be less glorious. He wanted to play it safe when taking chances would have been the better option. Same in the German national league with the Bavarians. Their funk just begun, so he should not have elected so many players from their team. With those young fast players, you need more than experience. Any small mistake is taken advantage of.
  12. Both disc and iinlay card and booklet were corrected.
  13. How old is your SACD player, and when was the SACD made? I have two SACD players, and some of the newly manufactured discs are not recognized by the older player. My Hi-Fi dealer told me there is no player on the market that is guaranteed to play any CD. OTOH the older player plays some old discs the newer one rejects. Oh well ...
  14. I, too, received the "wrong" version at first, e-mailed Terri Hinte at Fantasy and was sent a replacement with the correct bonus track - she apologized for the mistake. At the same time they issued a Mongo Santamaria twofer CD with two tracks missing. In other words, they corrected the issue.
  15. My pre-ordered copy is due in mid-December, amazon.de says.

    Art Tatum

These are the four tracks recorded for RCA Victor: Art Tatum (p) solo - New York, January 20, 1947 D7-VB-74 Smoke gets in your eyes D7-VB-75 Ain't misbehavin' D7-VB-76 Out of nowhere D7-VB-77 Cherokee
  17. The general lack of this sensitivity and lightness is what drove me away from rock music.
  18. So I was right to order my copy as soon as it went running low/last chance - phew. I would have kicked myself for missing it.
  19. Yes!
  20. That's a nice album ... The four tracks with Clark Terry were added as bonus tracks to the Verve Elite Edition CD of an EmArcy LP - indeed good music! Some of the tracks were in the Forty Years of Women in Jazz Box set on Stash or the two CD version on Jass:
  21. That's good news - I skipped the Wounded Bird CDs as I have all the Don Ellis Columbia LPs. Will get the BGO CDs soon.
  22. Ordered a copy of the Lost Tapes Vol.2 last night after reading your question. It's great they get that stuff in circulation, and that BGO reissued some Columbia albums - the Wounded Bird reissues gor for big money, at least when I look for them. Plus, I have all the LPs.
